Description: Relief pitcher J.J. Putz has officially retired from baseball according to USA Today.
Insight: The Diamondbacks released Putz in June, but he did not officially retire until this week. He will begin a new career, joining the Arizona front office. Putz finished with a 3.08 ERA and one All-Star appearance.
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley posts no-decision in final outing of 2014.
Insight: He went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks, with six strikeouts. Miley finishes the year at 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. Randall Delgado received the win versus St. Louis, with Addison Reed locking down his 32nd save.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill struggles continued on Saturday against the Rockies.
Insight: He was lit up for five earned runs and 10 hits, including 2 homeruns. Cahill did manage eight strikeouts over five innings, but still fell to 3-12 with a 5.55. Cahill needs the 2014 season to end.
Description: Arizona outfielder Mark Trumbo is dealing with a back issue, but if he's in Friday's starting lineup he'll be a solid fantasy option.
Insight: Trumbo is 4-for-9 with three homers and six RBI against Colorado starter Jordan Lyles. It's been a completely forgettable season for Trumo who spent much of the time on the disabled list and is batting .235 with nine home runs and 49 RBI.
Description: Arizona outfielder Mark Trumbo went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs as the Diamondbacks defeated the Padres, 10-4, on Saturday.
Insight: Trumbo helped Arizona jump out to an early 6-0 lead with a two RBI-single and then scored on a wild pitch in the first and a RBI-ground out in the second. Trumbo also scored in the seventh. He is batting .234 with eight home runs and 43 RBI this year.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson gave up two runs on four hits in six innings on Saturday and ended with a no-decision against the Dodgers.
Insight: Anderson also struck out six batters and walked none. Anderson has pitched very well in his rookie season, posting a 8-6 record with a 3.71 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings. He is someone to keep an eye on going forward, especially into next year's draft.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill has allowed nine earned runs, 11 hits and nine walks in his last 7 1/3 innings.
Insight: Cahill threw five straight quality starts from July 29 to Aug. 20 (2.73 ERA), but he's been terrible the past two starts. He's 3-10 with a 5.06 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP and an 83/46 K/BB in 90 2/3 innings this season.
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs as Arizona defeated Colorado, 6-2.
Insight: Hill hit .167 in the month of August as his batting average dropped as low as .239. He is hitting .244 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI in 464 at-bats this season. If you can, look for better options.
Description: Arizona manager Kirk Gibson told the Arizona Republic that the organization is going to take a cautious approach with starter Patrick Corbin's return. The 25-year-old may not make his first start next season until June.
Insight: The Diamondbacks have five pitchers, including Corbin, that will return from Tommy John surgery next year, so the club is committed to a slow rehabilitation process for its arms. Corbin had Tommy John surgery on March 25.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Josh Collmenter took a shutout into the ninth inning Friday night against San Diego and allowed one unearned run on four hits in 8 1/3 innings to improve to 9-7.
Insight: Collmenter struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. He had gone 0-2 with an 8.50 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP in his previous four starts and has a 4.05 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and 97 Ks on the year. He's an NL-only option at best.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero hit his 13th homer of the season Friday against San Diego.
Insight: Montero has bounced back after hitting .230 with 11 homers and a .662 OPS in 475 plate appearances last year, but he hasn't returned to his 2011-12 level of production (averaged 140 games, .284, 16 HR, 87 RBI, .825 OPS per season). He's hitting .260 with a .755 OPS in 2014.
Description: Arizona shortstop Chris Owings (shoulder injury) is expected to being a rehab assignment Sunday, according to an Arizona Republic report.
Insight: The shortstop batted .317 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 12 RBI, nine runs and one steal in June and .277 with a .771 OPS for the season. Didi Gregorius has been struggling of late, batting just .132 over the past 11 games.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Vidal Nuno allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven in seven innings Monday at Washington.
Insight: The move to the NL has been good for Nuno even though he hasn't won a game in eight starts with Arizona. He's recorded a 3.72 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 38 Ks in 46 innings since the Yankees traded him to the D-Backs for Brandon McCarthy.
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill went 1-for-4 with his 10th homer of the season and two RBI Friday night.
Insight: Hill has batted .189 in August and .247 on the season. He looks nothing like the player he was in 2012, when he had a .302 average, 26 homers, 85 RBI, 93 runs and an .882 OPS, or even last year (.291, 11 HR in 87 games).
Description: Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill has thrown four straight quality starts.
Insight: Cahill held the Marlins to two runs on six hits and had a 3/3 K/BB in 6 2/3 innings Friday night to win his third game of the year. He hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his six starts since he returned from the minors.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson has yielded two runs or less in each of his last five starts heading into Thursday's matchup with Miami.
Insight: Anderson is one of the few Arizona pitchers with good numbers this season having gone 7-4 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. In his last five starts he's posted a 1.80 ERA and 1.120 WHIP, including 30 Ks in 31 IP.
Description: Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock (broken hand) started a rehab assignment last week after missing two months of action.
Insight: Pollock fractured his right hand when he was hit by a pitch on May 31 and underwent surgery. He was on a tear before the injury, hitting .359 with 13 doubles, four triples, six homers, 14 RBI, 24 runs, eight steals and a 1.061 OPS in his last 39 games. He'll likely need another week before he's ready to return to the lineup.
Description: Arizona shortstop Chris Owings (shoulder injury) was in the batting cage over the weekend and fely fine afterwards.
Insight: The shortstop batted .317 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 12 RBI, nine runs and one steal in June and .277 with a .771 OPS for the season. He's still about two weeks away from returning as long as there are no setbacks. Didi Gregorius filled in nicely in July, but his production has taken a big dip in August (.227, .573 OPS).
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley has a career-high 8.29 K/9 this season, but he's allowed 1.27 HR/9.
Insight: Eleven of Miley's 22 home runs allowed this season have come with at least one man on base and he's given up four three-run shots. As a result, he has a 69.8 percent strand rate and a 4.61 ERA while his FIP is 4.18 and his xFIP is 3.41.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez has retired, according to cbssports.com.
Insight: Chavez won six straight Gold Gloves and hit 25 or more home runs six times in his first eight seasons, but injuries limited him to 154 games from 2007-10 and he became a part-time player for the Yankes and Diamondbacks after that. He'll finish with a .268 career average, 260 home runs and an .818 OPS.
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley won his seventh game of the season Wednesday at Cincinnati after throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
Insight: Miley gave up seven hits, walked four and struck out just one, but he worked out of jams in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. The 27-year-old lefty has found a way to keep the ball in the park lately, giving up just one homer in his last 44 1/3 innings (0.20 HR/9) after serving up 17 in his first 101 1/3 (1.51 HR/9).
Description: Arizona shortstop Chris Owings (shoulder injury) was placed on the 15-day disabled list a month ago and there is still no timetable for his return.
Insight: The shortstop batted .317 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 12 RBI, nine runs and one steal in June and .277 with a .771 OPS for the season. Didi Gregorius has started 15 games in July and is hitting .264 for the month with a single home run and six RBI.
Description: Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock (hand) will take live batting practice against rehabbing pitcher Daniel Hudson on Tuesday and then begin a rehab assignment. SOURCE: mlb.com
Description: Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill is out of Sunday's lineup against the Phillies with a bruised right hand.
Insight: Hill was hit by a pitch Saturday. It's unfortunate timing, as he's batted .410 (16-for-39) with six doubles and two homers in his last 10 games and has great numbers against Sunday's starter Roberto Hernandez.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero is 6-for-12 with a home run versus Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick.
Insight: Montero hasn't homered since June 28, but he's still knocking in runs and has 58 RBI for the season. If the top of the order can get on base Friday, Montero should be able to add to his total.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado owns a .419 career average (13-for-31) with one homer and zero strikeouts against Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez.
Insight: The two were frequent opponents when both played in the NL East. With a .272 average, four homers, 36 RBI, 40 runs and two steals in 375 at-bats, Prado hasn't been a good fantasy option this season, but he's a decent option Wednesday.
Description: Diamondbacks pitching prospect Archie Bradley struck out 10, walked one and allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings for Double-A Mobile Saturday night.
Insight: It was Bradley's most dominant effort of the year. The right-hander dealt with an elbow injury earlier this season, but he's allowed five runs on 17 hits in 25 1/3 innings since he returned to the Double-A rotation. He could be ready to jump back to Triple-A, where he had a 5.18 ERA in 24 1/3 innings before the injury.
Description: Diamondbacks pitching prospect Archie Bradley has allowed just three runs on 14 hits in 18 1/3 innings since he returned from an elbow strain, but he's also recorded a 9/13 K/BB in that span.
Insight: Bradley was ranked as one of the top-10 prospects in baseball by several reputable publications prior to this season. Overall he's posted a 3.66 ERA and a 38/26 K/BB in 46 2/3 innings and will need to show improvement with his control before the Diamondbacks call him up. It could be another few weeks or more before we see him in the big leagues.
Description: Arizona left fielder Mark Trumbo (foot) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list for Friday's game.
Insight: Trumbo proved he was ready by hitting five homers during seven rehab games, so Arizona activated him earlier than expected. He has been sidelined since April 22 due to a stress fracture in his foot. Trumbo was hitting .210 with seven homers and 19 RBI before he got hurt.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt loves facing Giants starter Tim Lincecum and so do his fantasy owners.
Insight: He's a career .577 hitter with seven homers and 17 RBI in just 26 at-bats. Goldy is having another fine season batting .312 with 16 HR, 61 RBI and a league-leading 193 total bases. He's always a must start when facing Lincecum.
Description: Vidal Nuno allowed just three hits and struck out seven over seven shutout innings Tusday against Miami in his Diamondbacks debut.
Insight: The Yankees dealt him to Arizona for Brandon McCarthy this past weekend. The left-hander should do better in the NL, but Chase Field isn't exactly a good place for a soft-tossing fly-ball pitcher like Nuno.
Description: Diamondbacks closer Addison Reed allowed a two-run homer to Marcell Ozuna in the ninth inning to blow his fifth save of the season Tuesday against the Marlins.
Insight: Reed has given up a whopping nine homers in 36 2/3 innings this season and has a 4.42 ERA. Manager Kirk Gibson has given him two votes of confidence and said earlier this month that the team isn't considering a change, but the D-Backs can't stick with him much longer. Brad Ziegler is likely next in line for saves.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero is out of the lineup Tuesday, according to Steve Gilbert of mlb.com.
Insight: This is the second time he's been out of the lineup in the past three games. "He's starting to get tired," manager Kirk Gibson said. "I can tell." Montero has batted .265 with 11 homers, 52 RBI and a .769 OPS this season, up from .230 with 11 homers, 42 RBI and a .662 OPS last year.
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley was solid on Sunday, going 6 2/3 IP and yielding one run on five hits.
Insight: Miley (4-6, 4.42 ERA. 1.25 WHIP) has not been able to repeat his 2012 performance over the last two seasons and hope for his return to that level is dying out. When he pitches like he did Sunday, fantasy owners remember the "good old days."
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero is 10-for-19 (.526) against Braves starter Aaron Harang.
Insight: Montero has rebounded from a down 2013, batting .259 with 11 HR and 49 RBI through the first 80 games. he could have a big day off the struggling Harang (6.00 ERA, 2.06 WHIP last three starts).
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson gave closer Addison Reed yet another vote of confidence Wednesday, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: "I think he's been pretty good," Gibson said of Reed. "He's done a pretty good job for us. We've had no discussions about removing him. You might feel differently, but we don't." Reed blew his fourth save of the season (23 chances) Wednesday at Pittsburgh. He has a 40/8 K/BB but has allowed eight home runs and 16 earned runs in 34 2/3 innings (4.15 ERA).
Description: Arizona shortstop Chris Owings (shoulder injury) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: The shortstop has batted .317 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 12 RBI, nine runs and one steal in June and .277 with a .771 OPS for the season. Didi Gregorius and Nick Ahmed will likely share the position.
Description: Arizona right fielder Gerardo Parra is only 2-for-15 against Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner.
Insight: That's who he faces on Sunday. As a general rule, Parra shouldn't be starting against left-handers. This season he's been particularly bad against them, going 12-for-68 (.176 AVG) with 17 K's.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt loves facing Giants starter Tim Lincecum.
Insight: He's a career .542 hitter with seven homers and 17 RBI in just 24 at-bats. Goldy leads the league in hits and is batting .341 over the past two weeks. A perfect time to face his favorite pitcher.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup versus Milwaukee and Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Montero has been on fire in June, batting .317 with five homers, 14 RBI and a .948 OPS through the first 16 games. He's already hit 10 homers this season and is well within reach of his career high (18).
Description: Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo has a sprained UCL in his pitching elbow. SOURCE: Steve Gilbert, MLB.com
Insight: A tear likely would have meant Tommy John surgery so finding out it's only a sprain should qualify as good news. Either way, it doesn't sound like Arroyo (7-4, 4.08 ERA) will be pitching for the Diamondbacks any time soon.
Description: For the first time in his career, Arizona right-hander Bronson Arroyo has been placed on the 15-day DL.
Insight: He's dealing with elbow tendinitis. It's poor timing for fantasy owners as Arroyo (7-4, 4.08 ERA) has won his last three starts in impressive fashion. There's no timetable for the 37-year-old's return.
Description: Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is on a nine-game hitting streak, including home runs in his last two games and has a favorable matchup Monday night.
Insight: Goldschmidt (.309, 50 RBI, 50 R, .943 OPS) has an MLB-high 27 doubles and 158 total bases. He hit his 15th homer of the season Sunday. He's produced exactly as expected this season and should be in all lineups Monday as he's 4-for-6 against Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado has batted .333 with 11 extra-base hits (3 HR), 19 RBI, 17 runs and an .861 OPS over his last 33 games.
Insight: Prado has struck out in 11.6 percent of his plate appearances during that span after fanning in 17 percent of his plate appearances and hitting .236 with zero home runs in his first 37 games. Prado has eligibility at second, third and in the outfield, but he's really only useful at second base because of his lack of power.
Description: Arizona closer Addison Reed picked up save No. 16 Tuesday against Houston.
Insight: The Diamondbacks only have 29 wins all season, but they have surprisingly handed Reed 18 save chances. He's allowed an unsightly eight home runs in 29 1/3 innings and has a 3.99 ERA, but his 33/4 K/BB is superb.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo threw seven innings and allowed one run on six hits in a win over the Astros Tuesday.
Insight: Arroyo is 6-4 with a 4.22 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP and just 46 Ks in 81 innings this season. His ERA hasn't been below 4.15 at any point, though he's gone 5-2 with a 2.76 ERA over his last nine starts after going 1-2 with a 9.50 ERA in his first four starts.
Description: The Diamondbacks have designated Trevor Cahill for assigment, though GM Kevin Towers indicated the right-hander may remain with the organization once he clears waivers, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "There’s a game plan in place for what we’re ultimately going to do, but as of right now he’s just designated," Towers said.
Insight: D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson said earlier today that the plan was to get Cahill back into the rotation. Arizona sent Jarrod Parker and Ryan Cook to Oakland in the deal for Cahill following the 2011 season. He has a contract for $7 million in 2014, $12 million in 2015 and club options in 2016 and 2017 with buyouts, so Arizona would be eating a lot of money if Cahill chooses free agency. The D'Backs likely received word from Cahill that he'll accept his assignment to the minors before they designated him for assignment.
Description: The Diamondbacks have designated Trevor Cahill for assigment.
Insight: D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson said earlier today that the plan was to get Cahill back into the rotation, but the organization has chosen to cut ties with the right-hander. Arizona sent Jarrod Parker and Ryan Cook to Oakland in the deal for Cahill following the 2011 season. Cahill has a contract for $7 million in 2014, $12 million in 2015 and club options in 2016 and 2017 with buyouts, so Arizona is eating a lot of money.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero has hit three homers with eight RBI in his last three games and has crushed Braves starter Aaron Harang, who will pitch Sunday.
Insight: Montero is having a nice rebound year after last year's debacle. He's hitting .274 with 35 RBI and an .802 OPS. He's also 10-for-18 (.556) with a double, a homer and five walks against Harang, so make sure Montero is in your lineup Sunday.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Mark Trumbo's new timetable has a goal of returning for the third week in June, according to an Arizona Republic report.
Insight: Trumbo suffered a stress fracture of the third metatarsal bone in his left foot and was placed on the disabled list on April 24. The initial six-week timetable has passed and it appears the total time he'll be sidelined will be eight or nine weeks.
Description: Diamondbacks shortstop Chris Owings plated two runs in Tuesday's win over Colorado.
Insight: He was a single shy of the cycle. Owings has played well in his first full season in the bigs, hitting .274 with six stolen bases. His .752 OPS in 179 at bats is fifth-highest among qualified rookies.
Description: Diamondbacks utility infielder Didi Gregorius has been recalled from Triple-A Reno (PCL) to take the place of the injuried Cliff Pennington (sprained tumb).
Insight: While Chris Owings will still start at shortstop for Arizona, Gregorius could see some time spelling Aaron Hill at second base, as well as Owings. In 57 games with Reno, he hit .310/.389/.477 with three homers, 14 RBI, 14 doubles and three steals. He's only worth adding in the deepest of formats.
Description: Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock (hand) will undergo surgery and is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, according to Jack Magruder of foxsportsarizona.com.
Insight: Pollock batted .379 with 10 doubles, three triples, three homers, 10 RBI, 17 runs and eight steals in his last 23 games, but he fractured his right hand when he was hit by a pitch Saturday night. His absence will open up more at-bats for Cody Ross and Eric Chavez.
Description: Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock fractured his right hand Saturday night when he was hit by a pitch, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Pollock has batted .379 with 10 doubles, three triples, three homers, 10 RBI, 17 runs and eight steals in his last 23 games, so this is an unfortunate turn of events. The D'Backs will probably give more at-bats to Cody Ross and Eric Chavez with Pollock out.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Josh Collmenter threw a three-hit shutout Thursday against the Reds.
Insight: Collmenter pitched to the minimum 27 batters in the game, walking none and getting three double plays. He's gone 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP in 54 innings since he joined the starting lineup.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado hit his first homer of the season Tuesday against the Padres.
Insight: Prado is batting .264 with 21 RBI this season and the lack of any power or speed has made things worse. He's struck out in a career-high 15.7 percent of his plate appearances, up from 8.0 percent last year.
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley struck out 11 batters in seven innings Tuesday against the Padres.
Insight: Miley (3-5, 4.76 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) has been solid in May, recording a 4.01 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 33 2/3 innings after putting up a 5.36 ERA in his first seven starts. He hasn't allowed a homer in his last two starts after giving up 10 in his first 62 innings.
Description: Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo left Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the NY Mets due to a sore right elbow.
Insight: Arroyo threw six innings yielding one run and six hits on 75 pitched, but was pulled with a tender elbow. This probably won't keep him from his next start, but it is worth watching. Arroyo has yielded one run or less in four of his last five appearances.
Description: Aaron Hill could have a tough time against Daisuke Matsuzaka Sunday in the second game of Arizona's doubleheader.
Insight: Hill faced Dice-K on a regular basis when both were playing in the AL East early on in their careers and it rarely worked out in his favor (just 5-for-28 with five punchouts). He doesn't have any prior history with today's Game 1 starter, Rafael Montero (0-2, 6.97 ERA).
Description: Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that Aaron Hill (shoulder) wanted to play Tuesday , but the team decided to keep him out another day, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Hill has batted .319 with two homers, seven RBI and an .841 OPS in 12 May games to get his season average up to .269, but he hasn't played since May 16 due to a sore shoulder.
Description: Arizona third baseman Martin Prado's vision checked out fine on Monday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Prado left Sunday's game with blurred vision. He should be in the lineup Tuesday. He's been a terrible fantasy option this season, hitting .256 with no homers or steals and 16 RBI. He has a career-high 16 percent strikeout rate, up from eight percent last year.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Cody Ross slugged his first home run of the 2014 season Sunday in a win against the Dodgers.
Insight: It was a no-doubter too, traveling an estimated distance of 449 feet. In fact, that's his longest homer since 2006 when he hit a 466-footer at Dolphin Stadium. The home run was Ross' first since suffering a dislocated hip last August.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock has batted .417 with six extra-base hits (two HR), seven runs and six steals in his last 10 games.
Insight: Pollock has raised his average from .256 to .302 during that span. He's one of the top defensive outfielders in baseball but he hasn't done much to get excited about offensively during his career.
Description: Diamondbacks infielder Martin Prado's average dropped to .247 after he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Wednesday afternoon against the Nationals. He has zero homers and zero steals this year.
Insight: Prado also got off to a slow start last year, hitting .238 in his first 286 at-bats, but he still was putting the ball in play (10.3 K%). This year, Prado has a career-worst 16.5 percent K rate.
Description: Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy was dominant Wednesday against Washington after getting destroyed his last time out.
Insight: McCarthy gave up nine hits and seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings last Friday, but he held the Nats to two hits and one run while striking out seven and walking none in eight innings Wednesday afternoon. The right-hander has thrown seven innings or more and allowed two runs or less in three of his last four starts, but it's results like his previous start that make him tough to trust. He's 1-6 with a 5.01 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP this year.
Description: Arizona starter Wade Miley held the White Sox to two runs on four hits in seven innings (6 K, 0 BB) Saturday to win his third game of the year.
Insight: Miley (3-3, 4.82 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) posted a 5.36 ERA in his first seven starts and he's chipping away at that ERA. The left-hander was good at keeping the ball in the park the last two years (0.8 HR/9), but this year he has given up eight homers in 56 innings (1.29 HR/9) and just two of them were solo shots.
Description: Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy was roughed up by the White Sox Friday night.
Insight: McCarthy gave up nine hits and seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander was solid in his previous two starts but now has a 5.66 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP this season. He's given up eight home runs in 47 2/3 innings.
Description: D-Backs catcher Miguel Montero has never had a hit against Padres starter Tyson Ross (0-for-9 with three strikeouts). That's probably why he's not playing Sunday in the series finale.
Insight: Tuffy Gosewich will handle the catching duties for Arizona. If the Diamondbacks are able to chase Ross (3-3, 3.68 ERA) from the game early we could see Montero (.286, 4 HR, 17 RBI) come in as a pinch-hitter.
Description: Diamondbacks pitching prospect Archie Bradley may have to delay his timetable for a major league debut after being placed on the disabled list due to a mild flexor strain.
Insight: Arizona GM Kevin Towers said earlier this month that the team wouldn't rush Bradley to the majors and the team's 8-21 record makes it easier for them to take their time in bringing the future ace up to the big leagues.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Mark Trumbo (foot) said he has been told he'll miss six weeks, according to Jack Magruder of foxsportsarizona.com.
Insight: Trumbo has a stress fracture of the third metatarsal bone in his left foot and his MRI also revealed plantar fasciitis. Trumbo suffered a stress fracture in his right foot at the end of the 2011 season and needed 5 1/2 months to heal, so there's a chance he could be out longer than six weeks this time. He hit .210 with seven homers and 19 RBI in his first 21 games this season.
Description: Diamondbacks pitching prospect Archie Bradley has a 3.98 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and a 20/8 K/BB in 20 1/3 innings with Triple-A Reno this season.
Insight: The D'Backs have already had to replace three of the five members of their expected starting rotation (Patrick Corbin due to injury, Trevor Cahill and Randall Delgado due to ineffectiveness), but they haven't made the call for Bradley yet. Arizona GM Kevin Towers said earlier this month that the team wouldn't rush Bradley to the majors, and his mixed results so far make that decision easier.
Description: Arizona infielder Martin Prado went 0-for-4 Thursday and is batting .234 with zero homers this season.
Insight: Prado has struck out in 17.2 percent of his plate appearances, up from just 8.0 percent a year ago. When Prado started off with a .238 average in his first 73 games last year, he had a 10.3 percent K rate and the low average was more the result of a .250 BABIP.
Description: Arizona infielder Martin Prado is not a preferred fantasy option Wednesday against Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija.
Insight: Samardzija has limited Prado to just two hits in 13 career at bats (.157 AVG). Prado has been pretty useless this season (.247 AVG, zero homers in 22 games) and shouldn't be owned in any fantasy leagues.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Mark Trumbo won't be in the lineup Tuesday against the Cubs. SOURCE: Diamondbacks on Twitter
Insight: Trumbo has logged the sixth-most at bats in the National League this season and could probably use a night off. His power numbers have been excellent (7 HR, 19 RBI) but he's hitting just .210.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo gave up nine earned runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Mets.
Insight: Arroyo has a 9.95 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings with his new ballclub. He has averaged just 86.4 mph with his sinker (his main pitch), down a full mph from last season, and he may still be dealing with the back injury that caused him to miss most of spring training.
Description: Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers reiterated that top pitching prospect Archie Bradley (RHP) will not be rushed to the majors.
Insight: Though fantasy owners, Bradley's agent and Diamondbacks fans want him up with the big club, the GM is resisting at this time. Still, figure him to be in the Arizona starting rotation by June 1 after 2014 free agency and Super Two dates have been passed. If you have room we still recommend stashing him.
Description: The Diamondbacks have demoted Trevor Cahill to the bullpen, the team announced via Twitter.
Insight: Cahill has a dreadful 9.17 ERA and a 2.15 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings this season (four starts). Mike Bolsinger, who has a 3.31 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in 385 2/3 minor league innings but hasn't pitched in the majors, will take his spot in the rotation.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero will get a day off Sunday.
Insight: Tuffy Gosewisch is catching Trevor Cahill. Montero is hitting .234 with one homer and five RBI after a down year in 2013 (.230, 11 HR, 42 RBI). He hit .283 with an .817 OPS and an average of 14 homers per season from 2009-12.
Description: Diamondbacks top pitching prospect Archie Bradley (RHP) had a strong first outing for Reno, going five innings without yielding a run on four hits.
Insight: Bradley, MLB.com's No. 5 prospect in baseball, had a 1.84 ERA in 152 innings last season (123 1/3 at Double-A, 28 2/3 at Single-A Advanced). He should be up right after the super-two date and fantasy owners should be prepared to jump on this talented right-hander.
Description: According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks are preparing Josh Collmenter to move into the rotation.
Insight: D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson mentioned Trevor Cahill and Randall Delgado as possibilities to move to the bullpen, though he said both will make their next scheduled starts. Collmenter is 13-12 with a 4.03 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and 137 Ks in 196 2/3 career innings as a starter, compared to 7-6 with a 2.56 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and 129 Ks in 144 innings in relief. Eventually, prospect Archie Bradley will take that available spot in the Arizona rotation, so Collmenter is only an option in NL-only leagues.
Description: According to the Arizona Republic, Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (hip) is 7-10 days away from returning.
Insight: Ross is currently on a rehab assignment in Triple-A Reno. "He's been swinging the bat well all spring," GM Kevin Towers said. "The key thing for him is how he feels when he goes out there and has to play on back-to-back days, nine innings in the outfield." Mark Trumbo plays every day in left field, so Ross, Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock will have to split up starts at the other two outfield spots.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado left Friday's game with a lacerated left index finger but he's in the lineup Saturday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Insight: Prado is off to a 4-for-28 (.143) start. The utilityman hit just .238 with five home runs and a .623 OPS in his first 73 games last season, but he batted .322 with nine homers and an .862 OPS over his last 82 games.
Description: Diamondbacks third baseman Martin Prado is just 1-for-11 (.091) versus Rockies starter Juan Nicasio.
Insight: Prado is a fantasy favorite because of his versatility. He's eligible at 2B, 3B and outfield. At some point, however, he'll be dropped as the team's cleanup hitter for someone who can provide more protection for 1B Paul Goldschmidt. For now he's in a great spot, but should not be started on Friday in this unfavorable matchup.
Description: Arizona catcher Miguel Montero will get the afternoon off, just like his oppostite number, Buster Posey.
Insight: Normal day game after a night game stuff. He's been batting fifth in the Diamondbacks lineup with powerful Mark Trumbo behind him which should help him to approach his career RBI numbers this season.
Description: Randall Delgado will serve as Arizona's fifth starter to begin the season.
Insight: Patrick Corbin's season-ending elbow injury helped Delgado win the spot behind Wade Miley, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and Bronson Arroyo. Delgado will need to pitch well to keep top prospect Archie Bradley from taking his job. He had a strong 1.78 BB/9 and a 1.19 WHIP last year but gave up 1.86 HR/9 and had a 4.26 ERA. He doesn't have much mixed league value.
Description: The Diamondbacks assigned top prospect Archie Bradley (RHP) to the minors on Thursday, according to Zach Buchanan of azcentral.com.
Insight: Bradley, MLB.com's No. 5 prospect in baseball, had a 4.32 ERA in 8 1/3 innings this spring and should be up sooner than the team intended due to Patrick Corbin's season-ending elbow injury. The flamethrower had a 1.84 ERA in 152 innings last season (123 1/3 at Double-A, 28 2/3 at Single-A Advanced) and will try to master Triple-A for a month or so.
Description: D'Backs starter Patrick Corbin had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. SOURCE: Steve Gilber, MLB.com
Insight: Obviously, he's done for the year. Corbin is still only 24 so this operation, though serious, shouldn't have too big an impact on his long term future. Wade Miley started in Corbin's place Saturday in the season opener.
Description: Diamondbacks left fielder Mark Trumbo hit his first home run with the team Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: The D'Backs acquired Trumbo from the Angels this offseason after he averaged .251, 32 homers, 94 RBI and 152 strikeouts the previous three years. He should challenge the 40-homer mark due to Chase Field's favorable conditions.
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill gave up five earned runs, allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out just one over four innings Saturday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Cahill has posted an ERA between 3.78 and 4.16 in each of the last three seasons, but he walks a lot of batters, leading to a high WHIP (career 1.33), and doesn't strike out many (career 5.9 K/9).
Description: Patrick Corbin's MRI revealed UCL damage in his left elbow. It sounds like he's going to need Tommy John surgery. SOURCE: Nick Piecoro, AZCentral.com
Insight: If Corbin decides to undergo surgery, he'll miss the rest of the 2014 season and possibly part of next season as well. It's a massive blow to Arizona's playoff chances as Corbin (14-8, 3.41 ERA) was one of the best pitchers in the National League next season. Wade Miley has been informed that he'll be making the trip to Australia next week to pitch in Corbin's place.
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (knee) threw a bullpen session Thursday, just two days after suffering a jammed right knee, according to Steve Gilbert of mlb.com.
Insight: Cahill hurt himself while trying to avoid Cleveland's Jason Kipnis at first base during Tuesday's Cactus League start, but he should be fine. He went 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings last season and is a below-average fantasy option.
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill suffered a jammed right knee Tuesday and is day-to-day, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Insight: Cahill hurt himself while trying to avoid Cleveland's Jason Kipnis at first base during Tuesday's Cactus League start. He went 8-10 with a 3.99 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings last season and is a below-average fantasy option.
Description: Arizona starter Trevor Cahill left Tuesday's start with an apparent leg injury, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Description: Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo (back) didn't feel good playing catch Saturday but feels much better Sunday, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. He's hoping to pitch in a Cactus League game Friday.
Insight: This is new territory for Arroyo (14-12, 3.79 ERA for Cincinnati in 2013), who has never gone on the disabled list at any point in his 14 seasons in the league. The 37-year-old had an epidural last week for the bulging disc in his back.

Insight: This is new territory for Arroyo (14-12, 3.79 ERA for Cincinnati in 2013), who has never gone on the disabled list at any point in his 14 seasons in the league. He's still on track to make his first start of the regular season but fantasy owners should definitely keep an eye on his progress.
Description: Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has missed the past two spring training games due to "leg stiffness," according to beat writer Nick Piecoro.
Insight: We're talking about a guy who will cost you a top-five pick on draft day after batting .302 last season with 36 HR, 126 RBI and 15 steals., so we would like him to start the season healthy. It doesn't appear to be serious, but it's worth watching.
Description: Diamondbacks starter Bronson Arroyo was scratched Tuesday due to back stiffness, according to the Arizona Republic.
Insight: It probably isn't serious, but it is a reminder that Arroyo is now 37 years old. The right-hander has thrown 199 or more innings in nine straight seasons and posted an ERA from 3.74-3.88 in four of the last five.
Description: Diamondbacks outfielder Cody Ross (hip) ran the bases Monday for the first time since he suffered a fractured and dislocated hip last August, according to mlb.com. He ran at 60-70 percent.
Insight: Ross will make his Cactus League debut on March 13, barring a setback. He'll begin simulated games Tuesday afternoon. Ross hit .278 with just eight homers in 94 games after blasting 22 homers, driving in 81 runs and putting up an .807 OPS in 130 games with Boston the year before. He's not worth a roster spot in most leagues.

Insight: Ross dislocated his hip last August and had to undergo surgery. He hit .278 with just eight homers in 94 games after blasting 22 homers, driving in 81 runs and putting up an .807 OPS in 130 games with Boston the year before. He's not worth a roster spot in most leagues.
Description: D'Backs infielder Didi Gregorius heads into spring training as the favorite to start at shortstop this season. SOURCE: Diamondbacks.com
Insight: Chris Owings will also be vying for the shortstop job, though Gregorius has more big league experience (111 games compared to just 20 for Owings). Gregorius wasn't anything spectacular last season (.252, 7 HR, 28 RBI in 103 games) but he's still only 23. He'll be worth monitoring throughout the season.
Description: Starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo has decided to join the Diamondbacks. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: His new deal will pay him $19 million over the next two seasons. While superstardom has eluded Arroyo, consistency hasn't. The lanky righthander has posted an ERA under 3.90 four of the last five seasons. He'll be worth owning in most leagues.
