For The Last 365 Days

Adrian Beltre, 3B9/21/2014 9:14:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has another big night.
Insight: Texas has the worst record in baseball, however that is no fault of Beltre's. He continued his strong play, going 3-for-4 with all three hits being doubles, along with two RBI. He now is hitting .327 with 18 homers and 75 RBI. Beltre will be an early round pick in 2015.
Colby Lewis, SP9/21/2014 9:11:00 AM
Description: Rangers starter Colby Lewis was knocked around by the Angels on Saturday.
Insight: He suffered the loss by allowing seven earned runs (8 total runs) over five innings of work. Lewis is having a season to forget, as he now stands at 10-14 with a 5.34 ERA.
Adrian Beltre, 3B9/19/2014 2:33:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .429 (6-for-14) with three home runs against Angels left-hander Hector Santiago.
Insight: Beltre is having another tremendous season, batting .322 with 18 home runs, 71 RBI and 77 runs.
Elvis Andrus, SS9/18/2014 7:01:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus went 2-for-5 with a RBI against the Athletics on Thursday.
Insight: Despite the poor matchup, Andrus came into the day hitting .167 against Athletics pitcher Sonny Gray, the shortstop had two singles and drove in center fielder Leonys Martin in the sixth. Andrus is batting .264 with two home runs and 38 RBI this year.
Jake Smolinski, LF9/18/2014 6:53:00 PM
Description: Texas outfielder Jake Smolinski went 4-for-5 with a RBI and run against Oakland on Thursday.
Insight: The 25-year-old has played in just 14 games this season, but has hits in his last five big league starts, which go all the way back to July 20. Smolinski has started the past three days and is 6-for-13 with a home run, three RBI and three runs.
Elvis Andrus, SS9/18/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is a career .167 (2-for-12) hitter against Athletics pitcher Sonny Gray.
Insight: Andrus went 2-for-5 on Wednesday against the A's and is 5-for-17 (.294) in his last three games, but overall, the shortstop has been disappointing this year. He is hitting .263 with 70 runs and 26 stolen bases. The average and runs are career lows.
Alex Rios, RF9/16/2014 11:19:00 PM
Description: The Rangers are unsure when outfielder Alex Rios (thumb) will be ready to return to the lineup according to MLB.com
Insight: Rios hasn't played since Sept. 4 due to a nagging right thumb injury. He did travel with the team to Oakland this week, but it is possible he doesn't play again this year. He is hitting .280 with 42 extra-base hits and 54 RBI in 492 at-bats this year.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF9/16/2014 6:10:00 PM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday on his left ankle.
Insight: Choo will be shut down from running for six to eight weeks. This is on top of the surgery he had in late August for bone spurs in his left elbow. Choo had his worst season as a pro, batting .242/.340/.374 with 13 home runs and four stolen bases in 123 games. He is still signed for the next six years.
Geovany Soto, C9/13/2014 9:04:00 PM
Description: Athletics catcher Geovany Soto told reporters on Saturday that his back is already feeling a bit better according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Insight: Soto left Friday's game against the Mariners with back spasms and is not in the lineup on Saturday. He might get an extra day of rest on Sunday, but Soto should be good to go on Monday.
Elvis Andrus, SS9/13/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and stolen base against the Braves on Saturday.
Insight: All three of the Rangers runs on Saturday against Braves ace Julio Teheran were unearned. Andrus is hitting .262/.316/.333 with 69 runs and 26 stolen bases this season.
Leonys Martin, CF9/10/2014 10:07:00 AM
Description: Angels starter Matt Shoemaker has pitched well this season, but one guy he hasn't figured how to get out is Rangers center fielder Leonys Martin.
Insight: Martin is 5-for-7 (.714) with a pair of doubles against Shoemaker. Martin should post a second consecutive 30-plus stolen base season and is batting a respectable .279, but until he bats higher in the lineup his runs and RBI totals will fall a bit short.
Derek Holland, SP9/8/2014 11:15:00 AM
Description: Rangers pitcher Derek Holland pitched seven shutout innings on Sunday to capture his first victory of the season.
Insight: Holland returned from knee surgery on Sept. 2. In two starts, he has given up one run in 14 innings. He also has 11 strikeouts and no walks. Next up is the Braves. If you need pitching help, Holland can definitely supply some.
Ryan Rua, 1B9/7/2014 9:55:00 AM
Description: Rangers first baseman Ryan Rua went 3-for-4 with an RBI double against the Mariners on Saturday.
Insight: Rua has played consistenly since he was called up from the minors on Aug. 29, and this is his best game so far. He is hitting .257/.297/.286 in 35 at-bats in that time frame, and the double on Saturday was his first extra-base hit. He should be an everday player down the stretch, but he still probably only has fantasy value in very deep leagues or AL-only leagues.
Yu Darvish, SP9/6/2014 5:42:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish (elbow) will not pitch again this season.
Insight: Darvish has been out since Aug. 13 with right elbow inflammation. With everyone including Ron Washigton, who resigned as manager on Friday, packing it in for the season, there is no reason to rush back Darvish this month. He was 10-7 with a 3.06 ERA and 186 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings this year. He should be a fantasy ace again in 2015.
Adrian Beltre, 3B9/5/2014 11:36:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .357 (10-for-28) against Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma.
Insight: Beltre is one of the few hitters who is successful versus Iwakuma, who owns a career .232 batting average against mark. Beltre is having another tremendous season, batting .323 with 17 home runs, 27 doubles, 69 RBI and 68 runs.
Derek Holland, SP9/2/2014 11:31:00 PM
Description: Rangers pitcher Derek Holland pitched seven strong innings in his season debut Tuesday, allowing one run to the Royals in a no-decision.
Insight: Chances are fantasy owners did not keep a roster spot dedicated to Holland to this point and owners likely took the wait-and-see approach last week before picking him up for this start, so he is probably available in a lot of leagues. If you need pitching help, you could do worse.
Elvis Andrus, SS9/2/2014 10:16:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is a career .409 hitter (9-for-22) against Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie.
Insight: Andrus helps fantasy owners by scoring runs and stealing bases and getting on base is the first requirement for both which he does against Guthrie making him a solid play Tuesday.
Alex Rios, RF8/31/2014 9:41:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run against the Astros on Sunday.
Insight: Rios is really the only worthy start in the Rangers lineup. He is batting .280 with 41 extra-base hits, 53 RBI and 54 runs this year.
Derek Holland, SP8/30/2014 4:47:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have activated pitcher Derek Holland from the 60-day disabled list.
Insight: Holland has missed the first five months of the season after undergoing knee sugery. He will return to the starting rotation on Tuesday against the Royals, but he did not pitch well in his rehab assignment, so we wouldn't insert him in your rotation right away.
Adrian Beltre, 3B8/30/2014 11:59:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .222 (6-for-27) against Astros pitcher Scott Feldman.
Insight: Beltre has six hits in his last 16 at-bats, but for some reason, he does not see the ball well off Feldman. Despite the terrible season overall in Texas, Beltre is having another tremendous season, batting .327 with 17 home runs, 26 doubles, 68 RBI and 68 runs.
Elvis Andrus, SS8/29/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is a career .000 hitter in nine at-bats against Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer.
Insight: Andrus helps fantasy owners by scoring runs and stealing bases and getting on base is the first requirement for both. Since he can't find his way to first base, avoid him Friday.
Alex Rios, RF8/28/2014 4:53:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios (thumb) has been downgraded to out for Thursday's game against Houston.
Insight: Rios has been dealing with a lingering right thumb injury. He's batting .281 with four homers, 52 RBI, 51 runs and 16 SB, but much more was expect from him after last season's production.

Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios (thumb) is doubtful for Thursday's game against Houston.
Insight: Rios has been dealing with a lingering right thumb injury. He's batting .281 with four homers, 52 RBI, 51 runs and 16 SB, but much more was expect from him after last season's production.
Rougned Odor, 2B8/27/2014 9:10:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor went 1-for-4 with a grand slam Wednesday at Seattle.
Insight: The 20-year-old Odor was called up from Double-A out of necessity due to the failure of Josh Wilson and Donnie Murphy to fill in after Jurickson Profar's injury and he probably wasn't ready for the big leagues. Odor has batted .248 with six homers, 32 RBI, 26 runs and two steals in 290 at-bats.
Leonys Martin, CFHot8/27/2014 9:08:00 PM
Description: Rangers center fielder Leonys Martin has gone 22-for-50 (.440) in his last 14 games.
Insight: However, just two of those hits were for extra bases. One of them came Wednesday at Seattle, when he went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.
Derek Holland, SP8/25/2014 8:51:00 PM
Description: Rangers pitcher Derek Holland (knee) will be activated from the disabled list after his next rehab start Thursday, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: He was scratched from his last start Saturday, but he's ready to pitch Thursday. Holland had microfracture knee surgery in January and has missed the entire season. He's recorded a 4.30 ERA and 22 Ks over 14 2/3 innings during his rehab assignment after going 10-9 with a 3.42 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP and 189 Ks in 213 innings last season.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF8/25/2014 7:48:00 PM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo will miss the rest of the season due to a bone spur in his left elbow, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Choo will need surgery for the issue, which he has been dealing with since spring training. In the first year of a seven-year, $130 million contract, Choo hit just .242 with 13 homers, 40 RBI, 58 runs, three steals, 131 Ks and a .714 OPS in 123 games.
Yu Darvish, SP8/25/2014 5:08:00 PM
Description: Rangers GM Jon Daniels indicated Monday that Yu Darvish (elbow) is unlikely to pitch again this season, according to the Dallas Morning News
Insight: The Rangers are 50-79 and have no reason to take a risk with Darvish, who is signed through 2017. "With everything else we've dealt with and how important he is, we've said once he's completely asymptomatic and the doctor clears him, we'd get another scan and then if everything is clear, we'd get him back pitching," Daniels said. "By the calendar and how close to the end of the season we are, I don't know that it will allow him to pitch again. ... It doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me to take a risk when the MRI clearly shows there is something going on in there."
Adrian Beltre, 3B8/24/2014 11:13:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .133 hitter (4-for-30) against Royals starter Jason Vargas.
Insight: Add in Vargas has been pitching "lights out" and Beltre will have his work cut out for him. Beltre has a .323 average, 17 homers, 65 RBI, 64 runs and an .879 OPS, but he isn't likely to reach the 30-HR plateau that we have come to expect.
Yu Darvish, SP8/23/2014 6:35:00 PM
Description: Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish (elbow) has not resumed throwing and will not return from the disabled list on Monday according to Fox Sports Southwest.
Insight: Darvish is eligible to return from the DL on August 25 when Texas begins its 10-game road trip in Seattle, but that will not happen. There is no timetable for his return and with the Rangers out of the race, perhaps he is done for the season.
Scott Baker, SP8/23/2014 5:55:00 PM
Description: Rangers RHP Scott Baker will start on Sunday according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Baker told the Rangers he could go 75 pitches. He still a poor fantasy choice with a 5.75 ERA over 61 innings this season.
Leonys Martin, CFHot8/20/2014 8:22:00 PM
Description: Rangers center fielder Leonys Martin went 3-for-4 with one RBI and a steal Wednesday at Miami.
Insight: Martin has gone 15-for-30 (.500) in his last eight games, but with just one extra-base hit, one RBI and three runs during that span.

Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios (thumb) is in the lineup Wednesday afternoon.

Description: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Rangers starter Yu Darvish (elbow) is not expected to return on Aug. 25.
Insight: When Darvish was placed on the DL, manager Ron Washington said he expected the right-hander to return when first eligible. Now, he said he's "backing off" the idea of Darvish being back for Aug. 25. "I'm not really thinking about the 25th," Washington said. "I just don't know what's going to be. I don't know what’s going to happen there."
Alex Rios, RF8/19/2014 6:38:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios has been scratched from Tuesday's lineup with a bruised right thumb.
Insight: According to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the issue has been lingering for Rios. He wasn't able to take batting practice Tuesday.
Adrian Beltre, 3B8/17/2014 11:15:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .400 hitter (4-for-10) with a double and two home runs against Angels starter Hector Santiago.
Insight: Beltre has a .319 average, 17 homers, 64 RBI, 61 runs and an .874 OPS so fantasy owners can hardly complain about his production, but he isn't likely to reach the 30-HR plateau that he's posted over the past three seasons.
Yu Darvish, SP8/15/2014 6:52:00 PM
Description: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Rangers manager Ron Washington expects Yu Darvish to return to the rotation on Aug. 25.
Insight: Darvish felt tightness in his elbow while playing catch Monday and he was placed on the disabled list as a precaution. He has no structural damage and should be ready to start at Seattle in 10 days.

Description: The MRI on Rangers ace Yu Darvish showed only mild inflamation, according to sportswriter Anthony Andro.

Description: Rangers GM Jon Daniels said that the decision to place Yu Darvish on the disabled list with elbow inflammation was a precautionary move.
Insight: Darvish will undergo an MRI Thursday, but initial exams indicated the injury doesn't involved his UCL. He lasted four innings Saturday and felt tightness while playing catch Monday.

Adrian Beltre, 3B 8/10/2014 6:24:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre went 2-for-4 with a solo homer Sunday at Houston.
Insight: Beltre is likely going to come up short in his quest for a third straight 30-homer season, but with a .320 average, 17 homers, 62 RBI, 60 runs and an .880 OPS fantasy owners can hardly complain about his production.
Alex Rios, RF8/10/2014 4:24:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios left Sunday's game after aggravating his right ankle sprain again.
Insight: Rios was starting his first game since Wednesday, but he made it through just four innings before leaving. He'll be reevaluated Monday.

Insight: Andrus has a .345 average against left-handers this season and he's hit .368 with eight RBI and eight runs over his last 15 games, but he's not a good option Sunday with Keuchel on the hill.
Yu Darvish, SP8/9/2014 11:16:00 PM
Description: A rare bad outing for Rangers starter Yu Darvish against the Houston Astros.
Insight: Rarer still because the Houston lineup was missing a number of pieces in Jose Altuve, George Springer and Dexter Fowler. Although Darvish is 10-7 with a solid ERA his WHIP has taken a jump from last season - 1.073 to 1.260.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF8/9/2014 11:22:00 AM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is just 1-for-17 versus Houston right-hander Scott Feldman.
Insight: Choo has been a huge bust for the Rangers after signing a big contract. He's hitting .241 with 10 homers, 36 RBI, 52 runs, three steals and a .709 OPS. He's not likely to get healthy Saturday.
J.P. Arencibia, CHot8/8/2014 4:55:00 PM

Insight: Arencibia has doubled three times, homered three times and driven in 11 runs during that span. With Alex Rios sidelined, he's been moved into the No. 3 hole.
Geovany Soto, C8/8/2014 4:52:00 PM
Description: Rangers catcher Geovany Soto has been activated and is in Friday night's starting lineup.
Insight: Soto has spent almost all year on the DL with a knee injury, but the last two weeks were due to a groin injury. He has 11 at-bats this season.
Alex Rios, RF8/8/2014 4:48:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios aggravated a right ankle injury and is not in Friday's lineup.
Insight: Rios is expected to miss a couple of days, according to Astros beat writer Jose de Jesus Ortiz. Although not having a great season, Rios is still a productive asset, batting .293 with 4 HR, 45 RBI, 46 runs scored and 16 steals.
Elvis Andrus, SS8/8/2014 11:54:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus apparently has no clue against Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer having gone 0-for-7 with four strikeouts.
Insight: Andrus has a 13-game hitting streak on the line, but he'll have to make an adjustment if he wants to extend it further. He's batting .274 with 30 RBI, 59 runs scored and 21 steals.
Adam Rosales, 2B8/6/2014 6:59:00 PM
Description: Rangers infielder Adam Rosales had two homers and three RBI Wednesday against the White Sox.

Description: Rangers C/1B J.P. Arencibia has raised his batting average from .152 to .198 by going 9-for-22 (.409) in his last six games.
Insight: Arencibia has doubled three times, homered three times and driven in 11 runs during that span, but he strikes out too much to keep up any sort of hot streak.
Robinson Chirinos, C8/6/2014 12:05:00 PM
Description: Texas catcher Robinson Chirinos went 3-for-5 with two solo homers and three runs Tuesday at Chicago.
Insight: Chirinos (.240) has 11 home runs this season, which gives him some fantasy value in AL-only leagues.
Colby Lewis, SP8/6/2014 12:01:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Colby Lewis threw a shutout Tuesday against the White Sox.
Insight: Lewis has been atrocious all season so he still has a 5.50 ERA even after tossing the six-hitter against Chicago. He's been better lately, however, going 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA in his last four starts.
Mike Carp, 1B8/4/2014 4:54:00 PM
Description: First baseman Mike Carp, just claimed off waivers yesterday, will make the start at 1B Monday night.
Insight: Given the problems the Rangers have dealt with at 1B, Carp could see a decent amount of playing time. Whether he produces fantasy-worthy numbers is another thing. He batted .188 in 86 at-bats with the Red Sox.

Description: Rangers catcher Geovany Soto began a rehab assignment over the weekend and is targeting a Friday return from the disabled list.

Mike Carp, 1B8/3/2014 5:23:00 PM
Description: First baseman Mike Carp has been claimed off waivers by Texas.
Insight: Given the problems the Rangers have dealt with at 1B, Carp could see a decent amount of playing time. Whether he produces fantasy-worthy numbers is another thing. He batted .188 in 86 at-bats with the Red Sox.
Alex Rios, RFCold7/30/2014 10:15:00 PM

Description: Rangers C/1B J.P. Arencibia went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two homers and seven RBI Tuesday against the Yankees and he has a good matchup Wednesday against Hiroki Kuroda.

Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios has gone 10-for-46 (.217) in his career against A's starter Scott Kazmir.
Insight: Rios' string of nine straight seasons with double-digit homers is likely going to come to and end in 2014. He has just four home runs and 16 steals after averaging 22 homers and 32 steals the past two years.
Adrian Beltre, 3BCold7/27/2014 12:23:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has batted just .167 (5-for-30) over his last seven games.
Insight: Beltre is also just 6-for-29 (.207) with 11 Ks in his career against Athletics starter Scott Kazmir, so look elsewhere for a third baseman Sunday rather than spending the good chunk of change it will require to use Beltre.
Nick Tepesch, SP7/26/2014 11:27:00 PM
Description: Rangers right-hander Nick Tepesch left Saturday night's game in the sixth inning with a sore left knee.
Insight: Tepesch has yet to show he's fantasy worthy. His record dropped to 3-7 with a 4.84 ERA. He shouldn't be on any fantasy rosters at this time.
Alex Rios, RF7/24/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios, back in the lineup after missing time with an ankle injury, is just 1-for-16 (.063) versus Yankees starter Brandon McCarthy.
Insight: Rios sprained his ankle in the batter's box and missed three games. He's lacking power this season, batting .303, but his four home runs has to be annoying fantasy owners.

Neftali Feliz, RP7/23/2014 10:39:00 PM
Description: Rangers reliever Neftali Feliz could find himself in the closer role again after Joakim Soria was traded to the Tigers Wednesday night.
Insight: Feliz has allowed five hits and three runs in 10 1/3 innings since he was recalled from the minors. Neal Cotts (3.35 ERA, 50 Ks in 43 IP) is the other guy who may get a shot.

Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios (ankle) is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Yankees.

Jake Smolinski, LF7/22/2014 9:43:00 AM
Description: Texas outfielder Jake Smolinski is questionable for Tuesday's game against the NY Yankees due to a bruised left foot.
Insight: The 25-year-old is finding early susccess at the major league level. He hasn't been a .300 hitter since 2008 at Single-A, but is batting .389 through his first 11 games. The injury bug continues to plague the Rangers.
Alex Rios, RF7/21/2014 10:51:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios (ankle) was not in Sunday's lineup against the Blue Jays and is expected to miss Monday's game against the NY Yankees.
Insight: Rios sprained his ankle in the batter's box Saturday night. He's batting .310 in July.
Elvis Andrus, SS7/20/2014 12:26:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has hit .105 in his career against Toronto's Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Andrus has gone 2-for-19 against Buehrle. The veteran lefty is on the mound Sunday, so steer clear of the Rangers shortstop.
Alex Rios, RF7/20/2014 12:25:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios (ankle) is not in Sunday's lineup against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Rios sprained his ankle in the batter's box Saturday night and is day-to-day. With a .179 career average (5-for-28) against Sunday's starter Mark Buehrle, he wouldn't have been a good fantasy option anyway.
Shin-Soo Choo, LFCold7/20/2014 12:18:00 PM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo has gone 0-for-17 in his last five games and 10-for-63 (.159) since June 29, so he's not a good option Sunday even though he has great numbers against Toronto's Mark Buehrle.
Insight: Choo's career OPS against lefties is 224 points below his OPS against righties, but he's 15-for-36 (.417) with a double, a triple and a homer against Buehrle. Choo's hitless stretch has his average down to .236 for the season.
Alex Rios, RF7/19/2014 1:44:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios left Saturday's game in the first inning after injuring his ankle on a foul ball.
Insight: Rios has batted at least .310 in every month except June. He's putting together a solid stat line - .302, 4 HR, 42 RBI, 41 runs, 16 steals. This doesn't appear to be more than a day-to-day injury.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot7/18/2014 10:09:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk Friday at Toronto.
Insight: Beltre has batted .362 with 15 doubles, 14 home runs, 47 RBI and 43 runs over his last 66 games. He leads the AL with a .337 average.
Yu Darvish, SP7/18/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish struck out 12 batters over 6 2/3 innings Friday at Toronto.
Insight: Darvish gave up one run on five hits to get his ninth win. The right-hander has a 2.88 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and 154 Ks in 122 innings this season, so he's been exactly what fantasy owners expected.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot7/13/2014 9:42:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre will go into the All-Star break as the AL leader in batting average.
Insight: On May 11, Beltre was hitting .233. Since then, he's gone 83-for-219 (.379) with 14 doubles, 11 homers, 41 RBI and 35 runs in 57 games. He's batting .337 on the year.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF7/13/2014 12:56:00 PM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is not in Sunday's lineup.
Insight: Choo has had a disappointing season, hitting .244 with nine homers, 33 RBI, 47 runs and three steals after signing a big deal with the Rangers.
Elvis Andrus, SS7/11/2014 12:44:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus left Thursday's game with a bruised left ankle.
Insight: Andrus is producing about as expected, batting .268 with 49 runs, 19 steals and a .659 OPS. He's a low-end fantasy shortstop who will help in runs and stolen bases.
Jake Smolinski, LFHot7/10/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Texas outfielder Jake Smolinski doubled home two runs in the first inning Thursday night giving him six hits in his last seven at-bats.
Insight: The 25-year-old is finding early susccess at the major league level. He hasn't been a .300 hitter since 2008 at Single-A so we can't expect his production at this level to be a long-term.
Yu Darvish, SP7/8/2014 8:33:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish was hit in the head by a line drive while throwing in the outfield during batting practice Tuesday, but Darvish is expected to start Wednesday, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Darvish was examined by a team doctor Tuesday night and he'll be checked again Wednesday, but he should be good to go against the Astros, a team he's nearly no-hit three times since the start of 2013.
Elvis Andrus, SS7/8/2014 10:30:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is a career .100 hitter with five strikeout in 10 at-bats versus Houston starter Brad Peacock.
Insight: Andrus is hitting well this week (.346), but doesn't appear to see the ball well against Peacock and shouldn't be in fantasy lineups Tuesday.
Yu Darvish, SP7/3/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have pushed Yu Darvish back from Thursday to Friday due to the uncertainty of the weather, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: The Rangers don't want Darvish to start Thursday and then have to come out due to a lengthy rain delay. Darvish will start Friday against the Mets instead and Scott Baker will take the ball Thursday against the Orioles.
Carlos Pena, 1BCold6/30/2014 9:41:00 AM
Description: Rangers 1B Carlos Pena has done little since returning the the majors batting just .136 with one home run and one RBI in six games.
Insight: He'll be facing Ubaldo Jimenez on Monday and he's 0-for-11 in his career against the right-hander.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot6/30/2014 9:39:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is 8-for-20 (.400) with four extra-base hits including a pair of home runs against Baltimore right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez.
Insight: Beltre is up to .332 on the year after batting .600 over the past six games and .407 the past four weeks. He's a must start while in this hot streak.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot6/28/2014 8:20:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has gone 36-for-90 (.400) with eight doubles, four homers, 21 RBI and 13 runs in June.
Insight: Beltre is up to .333 on the year after going 3-for-3 Saturday against the Twins.
Yu Darvish, SP6/28/2014 8:13:00 PM
Description: Rangers ace Yu Darvish ended a personal two-game losing streak Saturday against the Twins.
Insight: Darvish (8-4, 2.42 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) struck out 10 and walked over over eight shutout innings. He's allowed zero runs in six of his 15 starts this season. After giving up 1.12 HR/9 last season, he's allowed just 0.60 this year.
Carlos Pena, 1B6/28/2014 10:23:00 AM
Description: Rangers 1B Carlos Pena, just from Triple-A Round Rock, is a career .333 hitter with three home runs against Minnesota starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: The career .233 hitter has just 15 at-bats since being called up with one home run. What was supposed to be a strong point, first base, has become a disaster for the Rangers with the injuries to Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland. Donnie Murphy and Brad Snyder have failed, now it's Pena's turn.
Alex Rios, RF6/28/2014 12:49:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Rios has struggled the past two weeks (.154) after a fast start to the season. His home run total is lagging well behind last season, but his overall numbers are still solid (.305, 3 HR, 34 RBI, 34 runs, 13 SB, .778 OPS)
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot6/26/2014 9:37:00 AM
Description: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre is a career .421 hitter (8-for-19) against Detroit starter Rick Porcello.
Insight: Beltre is hitting .328 with eight homers and 38 RBI. The 35-year-old recently became the 22nd player in MLB history with 2,500 hits, 500 doubles and 350 home runs.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot6/25/2014 9:17:00 AM
Description: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre picked up career hit No. 2,500 Tuesday against the Tigers.
Insight: Beltre went 4-for-4 with four singles and one RBI. He's hitting .372 with 16 RBI in June. The 35-year-old is one of 22 players in MLB history with 2,500 hits, 500 doubles and 350 home runs.
Carlos Pena, 1B6/24/2014 4:11:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have called up Carlos Pena from Triple-A Round Rock.
Insight: Brad Snyder has hit just .167 in 30 at bats since he was called up, so Pena will get a chance to fill the Rangers' void at first base. Pena has hit only .206 over his last 2,116 plate appearances in the big leagues, but he still has some pop.
Endy Chavez, OF6/23/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: A rare Seattle outfielder Endy Chavez favorable matchup is on the board for Monday.
Insight: Chavez is batting .224 in 21 games this season, but he is a career .615 hitter (8-for-13) against Boston starter John Lackey. He's also 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts after getting on base against the Red Sox right-hander.
Elvis Andrus, SSHot6/21/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is a career .354 hitter with seven extra base hits against Angels starter Jered Weaver.
Insight: Andrus is on a 10-game hitting streak which has raised his average 18 points to .271. He's also stolen three bases off Weaver and is 35-for-38 in stolen base attempts against the Angels over his career.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF6/21/2014 10:36:00 AM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is a career .452 hitter (14-for-31) with a 1.145 OPS against Angels right-hander Jered Weaver.
Insight: Choo hasn't been much of a fantasy asset this season, batting .252 with a .766 OPS. We're not sure Choo, who hasn't had an extra-base hit in seven games, is swinging well enough to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Mitch Moreland, 1B6/18/2014 4:17:00 PM
Description: Texas first baseman Mitch Moreland has opted to have season-ending ankle surgery. SOURCE: Jeff Wilson, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: The surgery is set for next Monday in North Carolina. It's a shame because Moreland would have had a chance to thrive without Prince Fielder (neck surgery) in the lineup. Brad Snyder and Carlos Pena will now be asked to carry the load at first base.
Carlos Pena, 1B6/17/2014 3:23:00 PM
Description: Apparently Brad Snyder may not be the answer to the Rangers' first base problems as the team just signed 36-year-old Carlos Pena to a minor league contract.
Insight: Snyder is batting .214 in the five games since he was brought up to replace injured Mitch Moreland, who was already replacing Prince Fielder. Pena has a history of free swinging (182 K's in 2012) but is also a power threat (one HR per 17.2 AB in his career).
Alex Rios, RF6/17/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios is 1-for-12 with four strikeouts against Oakland left-hander Tommy Milone.
Insight: Rios is putting together an excellent season batting .324 with 3 HR, 32 RBI, 33 runs scored, eight triples and 12 steals. As long as your league doesn't use "net steals" as a category as he's been caught a league-high eight times. This is a matchup to be avoided.
Adrian Beltre, 3B6/17/2014 10:27:00 AM
Description: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre is batting .412 with two homers against Oakland starter Tommy Milone.
Insight: On the other hand, he's not hitting well this weel, batting just .200 for the past five games with a .540 OPS.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot6/15/2014 11:29:00 AM
Description: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre is batting .383 with three homers and 11 RBI in June and has crushed Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma in the past.
Insight: Iwakuma is a tough right-hander, but Beltre is 10-for-25 (.400) with a double and three homers against him. The favorable matchup combined with Beltre's scorching June make him a strong play on Sunday.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF6/11/2014 10:54:00 PM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo contributed four RBI Wednesday in a win over the Marlins.
Insight: Three of those runs came across on a bases loaded double in the third inning. Though his average has fallen a bit (.261), Choo still has one of the highest on base percentages in the league at .397.
Yu Darvish, SP6/11/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Rangers ace Yu Darvish earned his first career shutout Wednesday against Miami.
Insight: With the way he's pitched since coming onto the scene in 2012, it's hard to believe Darvish didn't have a shutout until now. His tidy 2.11 ERA is among the best in the major leagues and Darvish is one of just six big league pitchers with 100 or more strikeouts this season. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against Oakland.
Rougned Odor, 2B6/10/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor (shoulder) is in the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.
Insight: Odor left Sunday's game with a sprained right shoulder, but his MRI revealed no structural damage.
Brad Snyder, RF6/10/2014 4:29:00 PM
Description: Texas Rangers minor league outfielder Brad Snyder has been called and will start at first base on Tuesday.
Insight: If he proves he can make it with the glove, he's certain shown talent with the bat. Snyder is batting .289 with 18 HR and 51 RBI. With the Rangers short-handed at 1B due to injuries to Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland, Snyder could be an option that fantasy owners could enjoy.
Rougned Odor, 2B6/9/2014 6:06:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor's MRI revealed no structural damage in his right shoulder, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Odor left Sunday's game with a sprained right shoulder, but the Rangers received good news for a change. Texas has possibly had more injuries than any other team this season, especially to the right side of the infield. Prince Fielder and Jurickson Profar are likely done for the season and the team announced Sunday that Mitch Moreland will need ankle surgery.
Brad Snyder, RF6/9/2014 4:49:00 PM
Description: Texas Rangers minor league outfielder Brad Snyder was seen playing 1B this weekend down at Triple-A Round Rock.
Mitch Moreland, 1B6/9/2014 4:43:00 PM
Description: Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland will get a second opinion and hopes to have a less serious ankle surgery than reconstruction which would keep him out for three months.
Insight: If the less extensive work is done, Moreland (.246, 2 HR, 23 RBI) could return in 3-4 weeks. Donnie Murphy will continue to play 1B.
Rougned Odor, 2B6/8/2014 5:02:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor exited Sunday's game with an injury, according to Richard Durrett of espndallas.com.
Insight: The Rangers have possibly had more injuries than any other team this season, especially to the right side of the infield. Prince Fielder and Jurickson Profar are likely done for the season and the team announced Sunday that Mitch Moreland will miss three months due to ankle surgery. Odor appeared to suffer an injury while diving back to first on a pickoff move.
Mitch Moreland, 1B6/8/2014 1:50:00 PM
Description: Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland needs left ankle surgery and will miss three months, according to Richard Durrett of espndallas.com.
Insight: Both of Texas' first basemen, Prince Fielder and Moreland, have suffered serious injuries this season, and Kendrys Morales is off the table after signing with the Twins Saturday. Corner infield prospect Joey Gallo, who has hit 61 homers in his last 169 games in the minors, was promoted to Double-A in the wake of Moreland's injury and he could be on the fast track to the majors.
Alexi Ogando, SP6/4/2014 4:39:00 PM
Description: Texas reliever Alexi Ogando has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. SOURCE: Bob Nightengale, USA Today
Insight: Ogando (2-3, 6.84 ERA) was brutal against the Orioles last night, allowing two hits and three earned runs in just a third of an inning. Aaron Poreda has been called up from Triple-A Round Rock to take Ogando's vacant roster spot.
Adrian Beltre, 3B6/4/2014 9:35:00 AM
Description: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre blasted three hits including his sixth home run of the season Tuesday in a loss to Baltimore.
Insight: April wasn't kind to Beltre (.234 in 47 at bats) but he's rebounded beautifully since then, hitting .322 over his last 30 games. Even at 35, Beltre is still a top-tier fantasy talent.
Matt Harrison, SP6/3/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Texas starter Matt Harrison had spinal fusion surgery on Tuesday. SOURCE: TR Sullivan, MLB.com
Insight: He won't pitch again in 2014. Peyton Manning underwent a similar procedure a few years ago and came back better than ever so hopefully the same is true for Harrison. The left-hander turns 29 in September.
Jurickson Profar, 2B6/3/2014 4:57:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar (shoulder) doesn't expect to play again this season. SOURCE: Jeff Wilson, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: Profar aggravated his shoulder strain in late May and was shut down indefinitely. Baseball America's No. 1 prospect in 2013 will try to get his career back on track in 2015.
Yu Darvish, SP6/1/2014 7:55:00 PM
Description: Texas right-hander Yu Darvish was dominant Sunday in his return to the starting rotation.
Insight: He delivered 12 punchouts over eight scoreless frames. Opposing hitters are now batting just .210 against Darvish (5-2, 2.08 ERA) in 2014. When healthy, Darvish is a top-ten fantasy pitcher.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF6/1/2014 11:59:00 AM
Description: Texas left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is not in the lineup Sunday at Washington.
Insight: Choo has an on-base percentage above .400 for the second straight season and is hitting .289 with six homers, 18 RBI, 31 runs and three steals.
Mitch Moreland, 1B5/31/2014 10:26:00 AM
Description: Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland is just 2-for-15 (.133) against Nationals right-hander Doug Fister.
Insight: The Rangers have moved Moreland up to third in the lineup in front of Adrian Beltre with Prince Fielder on the disabled list, but he should be avoided in this unfavorable matchup.
Alex Rios, RFHot5/31/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios is 10-for-19 (.526) against Washington right-hander Doug Fister.
Insight: Rios is hot, batting .385 over the past two weeks to raise his average to .319. Two complains with his performance this season, however. He's hit just three homers after blasting 18 last season and he's been caught stealing a league-leading six times, so if your league uses net steals he's been hurting you more than helping.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot5/30/2014 10:00:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre raised his average to .300 for the first time since April 4 with three hits Friday night.
Insight: Beltre has gone 27-for-69 (.391) with four doubles, three homers and 10 RBI in his last 17 games.
Yu Darvish, SP5/29/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have moved Yu Darvish's start back to Sunday. Previously, the right-hander told reporters he would pitch Saturday against Washington. SOURCE: Gerry Fraley, Dallas Morning News
Insight: Darvish (4-2, 2.35 ERA) has been dealing with neck stiffness but it looks like the injury will only cost him one start. Nick Tepesch (2-0, 2.95 ERA) will start Saturday's game.
Elvis Andrus, SS5/29/2014 11:49:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Andrus has turned it around of late, batting .308 this week. Luis Sardinas gets the start at shortstop. He's batting .280 in limited time and holds little fantasy value.
Adrian Beltre, 3B5/29/2014 10:44:00 AM
Description: Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre "owns" Twins right-hander Samuel Deduno.
Insight: Beltre is 5-for-6 against Deduno with a double, triple and two homers for a stunning 3.167 OPS. Beltre's numbers are down from last season, but he's still batting a respectable .287 with a .798 OPS. He's always been a second-half hitter, so no need to panic.
Yu Darvish, SP5/28/2014 7:20:00 PM
Description: Texas right-hander Yu Darvish expects to make his scheduled appearance Saturday against Washington. SOURCE: Jeff Wilson, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: He missed Tuesday's start because of a stiff neck. If Darvish (4-2, 2.35 ERA) can't pitch Saturday, Nick Tepesch (2-0, 2.95 ERA) would get the start instead.
Alex Rios, RFHot5/28/2014 9:56:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios has gone 27-for-70 (.386) with five doubles, four triples and one homer in his last 18 games.
Insight: Rios has picked up multiple hits in seven straight games while hitting .516 in that span. He's up to .330 on the year, though he only has three home runs due to a 5.4 percent HR/FB.
Scott Baker, SP5/27/2014 11:00:00 PM
Description: Rangers RHP Scott Baker gave up two runs on three hits with a 4/0 K/BB in six innings Tuesday at Minnesota.
Insight: Baker had to start after Yu Darvish was scratched due to neck stiffness. Darvish should be fine, but Baker could stick around as the No. 5 starter.
Yu Darvish, SP5/27/2014 8:19:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish's MRI results were "unremarkable," which means he has no structural damage, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: Darvish was scratched from Tuesday's start after waking up with neck stiffness. He missed Opening Day with the same injury but was able to return on April 6.
Yu Darvish, SP5/27/2014 4:38:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish has been scratched from Tuesday's start due to a stiff neck, according to the team.
Insight: Fantasy owners don't want to hear this, but he is scheduled for an MRI. He missed Opening Day with the same injury. He's 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 61.1 IP. Scott Baker will make the start.
Elvis Andrus, SS5/27/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is 1-for-13 (.077) against Minnesota starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: After a average start, Andrus has turned it around, hitting safely in 18 of his last 21 games and batting .318. Avoid this matchup, however.
Alex Rios, RFHot5/27/2014 10:20:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios is a career .458 hitter (11-for-24) with a 1.148 OPS versus Minnesota starter Phil Hughes.
Insight: Rios is batting .322 with three home runs, 29 RBI, 24 runs, nine steals and an .831 OPS this season after his sixth consecutive multi-hit day. He's a must start on Tuesday.
Elvis Andrus, SS5/26/2014 5:48:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has gone 7-for-16 with two doubles, three RBI and five runs in his last three games.
Insight: Andrus has been trying to get his average back up after going 4-for-46 (.087) from April 20 to May 3. He has batted .318 in 21 games since that slump and is hitting .260 on the year.
Alex Rios, RFHot5/25/2014 8:14:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios has had multiple hits in five straight games.
Insight: Rios is quietly batting .316 with three home runs, 29 RBI, 22 runs, eight steals and an .816 OPS this season after going 2-for-6 with a triple and three RBI Sunday at Detroit.
Mitch Moreland, 1BHot5/25/2014 8:11:00 PM

Shin-Soo Choo, LF5/25/2014 10:01:00 AM
Description: Texas left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is back in the lineup after leaving Saturday's game with an ankle injury. SOURCE: Richard Durrett, ESPN Dallas
Insight: Choo has been excellent this season, producing a .434 on base percentage in his first 44 games. That percentage ranks third in the major leagues behind only Yasiel Puig and Troy Tulowitzki. Texas needs Choo to carry the offense while Prince Fielder recovers from neck surgery.
Donnie Murphy, 2B5/24/2014 8:45:00 PM
Description: Texas DH Donnie Murphy reached base four times in Saturday's win against the Tigers.
Insight: Saturday was Murphy's first game since suffering a neck strain on May 7th. Though he should see regular at bats with Prince Fielder out of the lineup, Murphy (.230, 2 HR, 9 RBI) isn't someone fantasy owners can count on for consistent production.
Rougned Odor, 2B5/24/2014 8:40:00 PM
Description: Texas 2B Rougned Odor blasted four hits Saturday in a victory over Detroit.
Insight: The five RBI Odor registered on Saturday were a career-high. With Jurickson Profar encountering another setback in his recovery from shoulder surgery, Odor looks to be the Rangers' starting second baseman for the forseeable future.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF5/24/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo had to leave Saturday's game in the sixth inning after tweaking his left ankle. SOURCE: Evan Grant, Dallas Morning News
Insight: He went 1-for-3 with a walk before exiting. Michael Choice (.196, 2 HR, 17 RBI) will play out the rest of the game in left field.
Joe Saunders, SP5/24/2014 4:24:00 PM
Description: Texas lefty Joe Saunders will return from the DL Wednesday against Minnesota. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Saunders hasn't pitched since bruising his ankle April 4th against Tampa Bay. Scott Baker (0-1, 6.35 ERA) will lose his spot in the rotation when Saunders returns.
Elvis Andrus, SS5/24/2014 10:53:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus should not be started on Saturday versus Detroit right-hander Rick Porcello.
Insight: Andrus is just 1-for-12 (.083) with three strikeouts versus the Tigers' Saturday starter. While the Rangers may be forced to leave him in the lineup because of all their injuries, fantasy owners should avoid him.
J.P. Arencibia, CCold5/22/2014 10:12:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have sent catcher J.P. Arencibia down to Triple-A Round Rock.

Description: Rangers catcher Chris Gimenez went 4-for-5 Thursday in a rout of Detroit.
Insight: Gimenez was called up from Triple-A Round Rock earlier this week. He's only a .206 lifetime hitter in the major leagues so don't expect him to have many games like this.

Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar aggravated his shoulder injury and will be shut down indefinitely. SOURCE: Jeff Wilson, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios has batted.219 with 12 strikeouts against Felix Hernandez of the Mariners.
Insight: Rios has 32 career at-bats against the M's starter. He's also 3-for-23 over his last six games, so avoid him Wednesday.
Kevin Kouzmanoff, 3BHot4/16/2014 10:39:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff has gone 9-for-20 (.450) with three doubles, one homer and five RBI in six games while filling in for Adrian Beltre (quad), but he's been terrible against Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.
Insight: Kouzmanoff is back in the majors for the first time since 2011. He's 3-for-24 (.125) with nine Ks against Hernandez.
Elvis Andrus, SS4/16/2014 10:37:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has taken 67 at-bats against Seattle's Felix Hernandez and posted a .299 average (20-for-67).
Insight: Andrus is hitting .309 with three doubles, eight runs and four steals this season. Don't avoid him Wednesday just because King Felix is on the mound for the M's.
Prince Fielder, 1B4/15/2014 10:35:00 PM
Description: Rangers 1B Prince Fielder hit his first homer of the season Tuesday.
Insight: Fielder is batting .185 with nine Ks and seven BBs. His bat slowed down last season and he displayed reduced plate discipline. Moving to a better hitters park in Texas won't do anything to reverse that decline, but he should be able to put up solid numbers once he gets out of his slump.
Robbie Ross Jr., RP4/15/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: Texas starter Robbie Ross blanked the Mariners over 7 2/3 innings Tuesday night.
Insight: Ross didn't walk a batter after issuing six free passes his last time out. He has a 1.00 ERA through his first three starts in the majors. He pitched exclusively in relief the last two years.
Elvis Andrus, SS4/15/2014 11:28:00 AM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is just a .133 hitter (2-for-15) against Mariners starter Blake Beavan.
Insight: Andrus had an 11-game hitting streak end on Sunday, but got bat on the hit wagon Monday. Still, this is an unfavorable matchup to be avoided as even if he gets on base the struggling Rangers offense (two runs or less in five of last seven) will have problems knocking him in.
Yu Darvish, SPHot4/14/2014 8:48:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish has a cut on his right thumb but expects to make his next start on Wednsday against the Mariners. SOURCE: foxsportssouthwest.com
Insight: He cut the thumb with his index finger while throwing a curveball during his last start. "Even when I was throwing it didn't hurt me," said Darvish. "I've done this so many times that probably the nerve isn't working anymore so it didn't hurt me at all." Darvish has a 0.00 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP in two starts this season.
Colby Lewis, SP4/14/2014 5:59:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have called up Colby Lewis from Triple-A for Monday's start against the Mariners.
Insight: Lewis hasn't pitched since July 2012 due to Tommy John and hip surgeries. He was 32-29 with a 3.93 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 458 Ks in 506 1/3 innings from 2010-12.
Martin Perez, SP4/13/2014 9:05:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Martin Perez gave up just five hits (all singles) over eight scoreless innings Sunday against Houston to improve to 2-0.
Insight: Houston didn't have a runner reach second base due in large part to four GIDPs. The 23-year-old Perez has good upside and should be owned in 12-team mixed leagues.
Adrian Beltre, 3B4/13/2014 3:59:00 PM
Description: According to Richard Durrett of espndallas.com, the Rangers have placed Adrian Beltre on the 15-day disabled list with a strained quad.
Insight: The move was backdated to April 9, so Beltre can come off the DL on April 24. It's a Grade 1 strain so he should be able to return when he's first eligible.
Colby Lewis, SP4/13/2014 1:28:00 PM
Description: If Sunday's game against the Astros goes on as planned, right-hander Colby Lewis will start Monday versus Seattle. SOURCE: Richard Durrett, ESPN Dallas
Insight: He was sent to Triple-A Round Rock after failing to make the team out of spring training. Adrian Beltre is likely to be placed on the 15-day disabled list in the corresponding roster move.
Adrian Beltre, 3B4/12/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: According to Anthony Andro of Fox Sports Southwest, the Rangers are leaning toward placing third baseman Adrian Beltre on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: A quad strain has kept him out since Tuesday. If Texas makes the move retroactively, Beltre (.286, 0 HR, 4 RBI) could be eligible to return as early as April 25th against the Mariners.
Adrian Beltre, 3B4/12/2014 6:00:00 PM
Description: The Rangers will again be without third baseman Adrian Beltre Saturday against Houston. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: It's his third absence in a row after suffering a quad strain earlier this week against the Red Sox. Kevin Kouzmanoff (.400, 0 HR, 0 RBI) is filling in at third base.
Yu Darvish, SPHot4/11/2014 10:46:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish tossed eight innings of one-hit baseball Friday against the Astros but took a no decision.
Insight: Darvish nearly had a no-hitter a couple of times against the Astros last year and took a perfect game into the sixth inning Friday, but Texas didn't score off Scott Feldman. Darvish has a 0.00 ERA and a 15/2 K/BB in 15 innings this season.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF4/11/2014 9:52:00 AM
Description: Texas left fielder Shin-Soo Choo is just 1-for-13 (.077) against Houston starter Scott Feldman.
Insight: Choo is doing what he does best - get on base. He's batting .355 with seven walks for a .475 on base percentage. Friday, however, is a tough matchup.
Adrian Beltre, 3B4/10/2014 8:09:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has a Grade 1 quad strain, which is the least severe one. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: The Rangers pushed back Colby Lewis' promotion from Saturday to Monday or Tuesday so they can keep Beltre, two backup infielders and seven relievers on the active roster to give Beltre a few more days to get healthy before they place him on the DL.
Colby Lewis, SP4/10/2014 8:06:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have pushed back the callup of starter Colby Lewis by at least two days to Monday or Tuesday so they have more time to make a decision on Adrian Beltre (quad). SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: Lewis has missed the past season and a half due to elbow and hip surgeries and was expected to make his 2014 debut on Saturday, but the team wants to see how Beltre's sore quad responds before it has to place him on the DL.
Adrian Beltre, 3B4/9/2014 12:34:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre won't be in the lineup Wednesday against Boston. SOURCE: John Blake, Rangers VP of Communications
Insight: Beltre will head back to Texas to have his quad looked at. Josh Wilson (.455, 0 HR, 3 RBI) will continue to fill in at third base.
Shin-Soo Choo, LFHot4/8/2014 9:25:00 PM
Description: Texas left fielder Shin-Soo Choo got on base four times in Tuesday night's win against the Red Sox.
Insight: That's what the Rangers got him for. Choo has been an on base machine throughout his career (.389 career OBP) and so far he's done nothing to change that reputation this season (.444 OBP in four games). He's batting .467 during his current four-game hitting streak.
Adrian Beltre, 3B4/8/2014 7:56:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre left Tuesday's game in the fourth inning because of quad tightness. SOURCE: TR Sullivan, MLB.com
Insight: He went 2-for-3 with a couple RBI before exiting. Beltre was DHing tonight so Josh Wilson (.500, 0 HR, 3 RBI) will remain at third base.
Leonys Martin, CF4/8/2014 4:20:00 PM
Description: Rangers center fielder Leonys Martin will get Tuesday off. Michael Choice will start in his place.
Insight: Martin has hit .240 with a couple of stolen bases in seven games this season, but is hitless in his last three games (11 at-bats). Given a full season he should hit 10-12 homers and steal 40 bases which certainly has fantasy value.
Colby Lewis, SP4/8/2014 4:15:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Colby Lewis is expected to start on Saturday, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Lewis has missed the past season and a half due to elbow and hip surgeries. He will take over for injured Joe Saunders.
Prince Fielder, 1B4/8/2014 10:19:00 AM
Description: Rangers 1B Prince Fielder appears to be pressing early in the season and is batting just .148 without a home run.
Insight: Fielder has been chasing a few pitches out of the strike zone of late, but that will eventually stop. His Tuesday matchup, however, is unfavorable and he should be avoided. He's 0-for-6 against Boston left-hander Felix Doubront.
Yu Darvish, SP4/6/2014 6:14:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish was phenomenal Sunday in a win against Tampa Bay.
Insight: In his season debut, Darvish limited the Rays to seven hits and one walk over seven scoreless frames. His next start is scheduled for Saturday versus Houston.
Alex Rios, RFHot4/5/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios is a career .407 hitter with six extra base hits and a 1.281 OPS versus Rays left-hander David Price.
Insight: Rios is batting .400 this season and has a favorable matchup.
Yu Darvish, SP4/3/2014 8:57:00 PM
Description: Texas ace Yu Darvish will make his 2014 debut Sunday versus Tampa Bay. SOURCE: Anthony Andro, Fox Sports Southwest
Insight: He missed Opening Day because of neck stiffness. Darvish allowed two runs in five innings in his only start against the Rays last season.
Matt Harrison, SP4/1/2014 7:34:00 PM
Description: Rangers left-hander Matt Harrison will start for Double-A Frisco Thursday, according to Richard Durrett of espndallas.com.
Insight: Harrison has been bothered by tightness in his neck and back after sleeping on a soft mattress in February. He underwent two back surgeries as well as thoracic outlet syndrome surgery last season and missed most of the year. Harrison will need a few more minor league starts before he's able to rejoin the rotation.
Yu Darvish, SP4/1/2014 6:08:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish (neck) threw 86 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday, according to Anthony Andro of foxsportssouthwest.com.
Insight: Darvish was scratched from Opening Day and placed on the disabled list due to a stiff neck. If he has no discomfort Wednesday, he'll most likely start this weekend when he's first eligible to return.
Alex Rios, RF3/31/2014 9:24:00 PM
Description: Rangers right fielder Alex Rios went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI on Opening Day.
Insight: Rios has hit .291 with an average of 22 homers, 86 RBI, 88 runs and 32 steals over the past two seasons. He should enjoy hitting in the Rangers' high-octane lineup for a full season after spending 109 of his 156 games with the White Sox last year.
Adrian Beltre, 3B3/31/2014 12:06:00 PM
Description: Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre can't be counted on Monday against Phillies ace Cliff Lee.
Insight: Beltre has connected on just four hits in 32 lifetime at bats against the left-hander. It's going to be awful hard to convince fantasy owners not to start him on Opening Day but Beltre (.315, 30 HR, 92 RBI) is not a strong option with Lee going for Philadelphia.
Yu Darvish, SP3/30/2014 5:30:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have placed Yu Darvish (neck) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21.
Insight: Darvish didn't respond to treatment on his stiff neck and was scratched from his Opening Day start, though his MRI revealed no structural damage. The right-hander threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Sunday and had no physical issues, according to Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas. He'll resume a throwing program Tuesday and should be ready to start next weekend.
Scott Baker, SP3/28/2014 8:16:00 PM
Description: The Rangers made their minor-league pact with Scott Baker official on Friday.
Insight: Baker was released by the Mariners on Monday. Texas had some injuries to their rotation and needed depth.
Colby Lewis, SP3/28/2014 6:23:00 PM
Description: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers are expected to start Colby Lewis April 11 against the Astros.
Insight: Lewis went 32-29 with a 3.93 ERA and 458 Ks in 506 1/3 innings from 2010 to July 2012 before missing the last season and a half due to elbow and hip surgeries. He turned around a horrible spring with five scoreless frames Wednesday against the Mariners. Lewis will have fantasy value in deep mixed leagues when he's recalled.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/27/2014 8:49:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus (elbow soreness) hasn't played the field since March 17 but says he'll be ready to play on Opening Day, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Andrus has dealt with elbow discomfort since the beginning of spring training. He hit .271 with four homers, 67 RBI, 91 runs and 42 steals last season, including .313 after the All-Star break.
Colby Lewis, SP3/27/2014 8:47:00 PM
Description: According to mlb.com, Rangers manager Ron Washington said Colby Lewis is "very close" to being ready to join the rotation.
Insight: Lewis went 32-29 with a 3.93 ERA and 458 Ks in 506 1/3 innings from 2010 to July 2012 before missing the last season and a half due to elbow and hip surgeries. Lewis turned around a horrible spring with five scoreless frames Wednesday against the Mariners. He'll have fantasy value in deep mixed leagues when he's recalled.
Geovany Soto, C3/26/2014 8:22:00 PM
Description: Rangers catcher Geovany Soto had surgery to repair his torn meniscus on Wednesday. SOURCE: Anthony Andro, Fox Sports Southwest
Insight: Soto won't be back until June at the earliest. If Texas decides to play it safe, he could be out until the All-Star break. J.P. Arencibia will see as many at bats as he can handle in the meantime.
Tommy Hanson, SP3/26/2014 2:43:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have released Tommy Hanson rather than guaranteeing his $500,000 salary (which would have grown to $2 million on Opening Day), according to the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Hanson signed a minor league deal with Texas in the offseason and put up a 6.43 ERA in 14 innings this spring. Hanson was very good his first three years in the majors, going 32-22 with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP, but he went 17-13 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP the last two seasons. It's evidence of how far he has fallen that he was unable to crack the Rangers depleted rotation over Joe Saunders or Robbie Ross.
Nick Martinez, SP3/26/2014 2:34:00 PM
Description: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Nick Martinez will start the Rangers' fifth game of the season on April 8.
Insight: The Rangers had to move everyone up a spot due to Yu Darvish's neck stiffness. Martinez has only thrown 32 innings above Single-A and none above Double-A. He has posted a 3.30 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 327 1/3 minor league innings. Darvish doesn't have structural damage in his neck so Texas may only need Martinez for one start.
Robbie Ross, RP3/26/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: According to the Dallas Morning News, Robbie Ross will start Texas' third game of the season.
Insight: Yu Darvish (neck) was scratched from his Opening Day start and will be replaced by Tanner Scheppers. Neither Scheppers nor Ross has made a start in the majors. Ross had a 2.62 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP the last two seasons in 127 1/3 innings. The Rangers seemingly convert more relievers into starters than any other team.
Tanner Scheppers, RP3/26/2014 2:22:00 PM
Description: Rangers right-hander Tanner Scheppers' first MLB start will come on Opening Day against the Phillies, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Yu Darvish was scratched with neck stiffness. Scheppers had a 1.88 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 59 Ks in 76 2/3 innings as Texas' set-up man last season, and he earned a spot in the rotation this spring.
Yu Darvish, SP3/26/2014 2:03:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish has no structural damage in his neck, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Fantasy owners can breath a long sigh of relief. Darvish was sent back to Texas Wednesday for tests after his stiff neck did not respond to treatment. He won't pitch on Opening Day, but he'll play catch Saturday and may not need a DL stint.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/25/2014 10:59:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus (elbow soreness) had a "lengthy and productive" throwing session Tuesday morning, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: Andrus is in the middle of a seven-day throwing program after dealing with elbow discomfort since the beginning of spring training. Andrus (.271, 4 HR, 67 RBI, 42 SB in 2013) is still hoping to play Opening Day against the Phillies.
Tommy Hanson, SP3/25/2014 7:10:00 PM
Description: According to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com, the Rangers have to decide by Wednesday if they are going to guarantee Tommy Hanson's contract.
Insight: Hanson signed a minor league deal with Texas in the offseason and owns a 6.43 ERA in 14 innings this spring. Hanson was very good his first three years in the majors, going 32-22 with a 3.28 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP, but he went 17-13 with a 4.76 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP the last two seasons.
Colby Lewis, SPCold3/25/2014 7:06:00 PM
Description: Colby Lewis will not be on the active roster for Opening Day, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: Lewis went 32-29 with a 3.93 ERA and 458 Ks in 506 1/3 innings from 2010 to July 2012 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He also had hip surgery last year and missed all of 2013. In four innings this spring, Lewis walked six and gave up eight hits and eight earned runs.
Neftali Feliz, RP3/25/2014 5:13:00 PM
Description: The Rangers optioned Neftali Feliz to Triple-A on Tuesday.
Insight: Feliz lost the closer role to Joakim Soria and will work on his mechanics and arm strength in the minors. He had Tommy John surgery in 2012 and has dealt with decreased velocity this spring.
Yu Darvish, SP3/25/2014 5:05:00 PM
Description: Rangers starter Yu Darvish will not start Opening Day due to a stiff neck, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: Darvish is being sent to Texas for further examinations. The Rangers are concerned that the right-hander has additional issues besides a stiff neck.
Yu Darvish, SP3/24/2014 3:47:00 PM
Description: Yu Darvish has been dealing with a sore neck and it could cost him his Opening Day assignment.
Insight: Darvish (13-9, 2.83 ERA) was a strikeout machine posting 277 last season and the ace of many fantasy staffs. This is just a bump in the road and shouldn't change his season-long fantasy value.
J.P. Arencibia, C3/24/2014 12:22:00 PM
Description: Rangers backup catcher J.P. Arencibia will have to do a majority of the work behind the plate for the next 2-3 months with Geovany Soto sidelined by a torn lateral meniscus.
Insight: Arencibia has the power to put up solid home run totals, but he struggles to consistenly put the bat on the ball. He struck out 148 times in 474 at-bats last season for Toronto.
Geovany Soto, C3/24/2014 12:18:00 PM
Description: Texas catcher Geovany Soto has a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: The plan was for Soto to split time behind the plate with J.P. Arencibia (.194, 21 HR, 55 RBI in 2013), but now it will be Arencibia backed up by Robinson Chirinos for the next 10-to-12 weeks.
Joe Saunders, SPCold3/23/2014 8:00:00 PM
Description: Texas starter Joe Saunders got lit up Sunday against the Padres.
Insight: Saunders was tagged for eight hits and nine runs in 1 1/3 innings, though only four of the runs were earned. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says Saunders is dealing with a dead arm and it's unknown if he'll be able to make his next start. We don't have high expectations for Saunders this season.
Jurickson Profar, 2B3/23/2014 6:35:00 PM
Description: Texas second baseman Jurickson Profar has been diagnosed with a torn shoulder muscle. He'll be out for the next 10-to-12 weeks. SOURCE: Dennis Lin, San Diego Union-Tribune
Insight: Where's Ian Kinsler when you need him? With Profar out of the picture, the Rangers will probably turn to Adam Rosales (.190, 5 HR, 12 RBI) at second base. Free agent infielder Stephen Drew could also be an option for Texas.
Geovany Soto, C3/23/2014 6:13:00 PM
Description: Texas catcher Geovany Soto has a torn lateral meniscus of the right knee, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: The plan was for Soto to split time behind the plate with J.P. Arencibia (.194, 21 HR, 55 RBI in 2013), but now it will be Arencibia backed up by Robinson Chirinos for the next 2-3 months.
Jurickson Profar, 2B3/23/2014 3:32:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to a sore shoulder, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: Profar has been dealing with tendinitis in his shoulder for most of spring training. The 20-year-old was considered the top prospect in baseball going into 2013 but hit just .234 with a .644 OPS in 85 games. He's expected to start at second base this season after Ian Kinsler was traded to the Tigers, but may not be ready for Opening Day.
Tanner Scheppers, RP3/22/2014 5:31:00 PM
Description: The Rangers have announced that Tanner Scheppers has unseated Alexi Ogando from the rotation, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Scheppers was Texas' set-up man last season and had a 1.88 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and 59 Ks in 76 2/3 innings. Texas has had plenty of success moving relievers into the starting rotation in recent years. Ogando will shift back to the bullpen and serve as Joakim Soria's set-up man.
Joakim Soria, RP3/22/2014 5:22:00 PM
Description: The Rangers named Joakim Soria the team's closer on Saturday, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Soria beat out Neftali Feliz, who has struggled with his mechanics while working his way back from Tommy John surgery. Soria had a 2.40 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 160 saves from 2007-11 with the Royals before he needed Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2012. He could end up being a top-10 closer in 2014.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/21/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus won't be on the field for at least another week. SOURCE: Evan Grant, Dallas Morning News
Insight: He's been dealing with elbow tightness, though a recent MRI ruled out any structural damage. Andrus (.271, 4 HR, 67 RBI, 42 SB in 2013) is still hoping to play Opening Day against the Phillies.
Alexi Ogando, SP3/19/2014 3:10:00 PM
Description: The Rangers are looking for a long reliever, and Alexi Ogando may "win" the job by default after struggling this spring. SOURCE: mlb.com
Insight: Ogando has allowed 11 runs in 6 1/3 innings his last two starts and is no longer a lock for the rotation. Yu Darvish and Martin Perez are locked into the top two spots, but the final three spots are up in the air. Ogando, Joe Saunders, Tommy Hanson, Colby Lewis, Tanner Scheppers and Robbie Ross are competing for them, and Matt Harrison will also be in the mix when he's ready to return from multiple back surgeries.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/18/2014 9:21:00 PM
Description: Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus downplayed the severity of his elbow soreness on Tuesday, but he'll be shut down from throwing for three days and be reevaluated on Friday, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: "I feel good," Andrus said, according to the Dallas Morning News. "There was a little tightness there, but there is nothing to worry about. I'm good." The Rangers shortstop has been dealing with nagging tightness in his elbow this spring.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/18/2014 7:48:00 PM
Description: Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus says the severity of his elbow tightness has been exaggerated, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Andrus wasn't even aware he had been scratched from Tuesday's lineup until hours after the fact. "I feel good," he said. "There was a little tightness there, but there is nothing to worry about. I'm good."
Adrian Beltre, 3B3/18/2014 6:32:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre (quad) expects to play Thursday, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: Beltre left a game last Thursday with quad tightness. The third baseman has averaged 149 games, .314/.358/.545, 32 homers, 100 RBI and 87 runs per season the last four years (one with Boston, three with Texas). However, he has dealt with some leg issues the last couple of seasons and is now 34, so there's some risk involved if you're taking him at his ADP of 14.2.
Mitch Moreland, 1B3/18/2014 6:27:00 PM
Description: Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland is out with tightness in his left oblique muscle, according to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Moreland is in danger of missing the start of the regular season on March 31 against the Phillies. The 28-year-old is expected to serve as the Rangers' primary DH this season after batting .232 with 23 homers, 60 RBI and a .736 OPS in 147 games last season.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/18/2014 6:26:00 PM
Description: Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus is still dealing with soreness in his right arm, according to T.R. Sullivan of mlb.com.
Insight: He was scratched from Tuesday's lineup and will sit out a couple days. He has been dealing with flexor tendinitis and hasn't been able to throw at 100 percent during camp.
Adrian Beltre, 3B3/14/2014 9:18:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre took batting practice Friday after leaving Thursday's game with quad tightness, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: Beltre isn't likely to play Saturday but may be back Sunday. The third baseman has averaged 149 games, .314/.358/.545, 32 homers, 100 RBI and 87 runs per season the last four years (one with Boston, three with Texas). However, he has dealt with some leg issues the last couple of seasons and is now 34, so there's some risk involved if you're taking him at his ADP of 14.
Adrian Beltre, 3B3/14/2014 5:33:00 PM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre left Thursday's game with tightness in his left quad but isn't expected to be out long, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Insight: After averaging 143 games, .266/.317/.442, 21 home runs, 79 RBI and 74 runs per season from 2005-09 with the Mariners, Beltre has averaged 149 games, .314/.358/.545, 32 homers, 100 RBI and 87 runs the last four years (one with Boston, three with Texas). However, he has dealt with some leg issues the last couple of seasons and is now 34, so there's some risk involved if you're taking him at his ADP of 14.
Neftali Feliz, RP3/14/2014 1:55:00 PM
Description: Rangers manager Ron Washington said Neftali Feliz was throwing better, around 93-94 mph, in Thursday's exhibition.
Insight: Neftali Feliz has struggled this spring and isn't throwing anywhere near the high 90s he was at before the Tommy John surgery. Feliz and Joakim Soria are candidates to pitch the ninth inning in 2014 which will make it tough on fantasy owners. Setup man Tanner Scheppers could also end up in the role.
Shin-Soo Choo, LF3/13/2014 8:45:00 PM
Description: Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo had an anti-inflammatory injection in his elbow on Thursday, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Choo began experiencing minor elbow pain a week ago and it has lingered. He felt more soreness after making a throw home from left field on Wednesday and served as the designated hitter Thursday. "This happens every spring training," he said. "It’s the same problem, the same pain. Normally, it takes about 10 days, I take medicine. I DH. I get treatment. It makes it better."
Jurickson Profar, 2B3/13/2014 5:23:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar will be sidelined for three-to-five days after having his wisdom teeth removed, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Profar still hasn't played the field due to shoulder tendinitis, but the Rangers think he has enough time to be ready for Opening Day. The 20-year-old was considered the top prospect in baseball going into 2013 but hit just .234 with a .644 OPS in 85 games. He's expected to start at second base this season after Ian Kinsler was traded to the Tigers.
Neftali Feliz, RP3/12/2014 11:26:00 AM
Description: Rangers manager Ron Washington is talking about using a closer by committee. SOURCE: Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Insight: Neftali Feliz's struggles this spring have made things complicated. Feliz, Joakim Soria and Tanner Schepper are all candidates to pitch the ninth inning in 2014. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere for saves.
Matt Harrison, SP3/11/2014 3:49:00 PM
Description: Rangers left-hander Matt Harrison threw a scoreless inning on Tuesday, needing just 11 pitches to set down the Royals.
Insight: Harrison has been bothered by stiffness in his neck and back. He missed most of last season after undergoing back surgery. Harrison isn't likely to be ready for the start of the season, but should be back in mid-to-late April.
Matt Harrison, SP3/7/2014 8:26:00 PM
Description: The Rangers expect lefthander Matt Harrison to begin the year on the DL. SOURCE: Gerry Fraley, Dallas Morning News
Insight: Harrison has been bothered by stiffness in his neck and back. He missed most of last season after undergoing back surgery so this probably isn't a good sign. Harrison's injury could open up a spot in the rotation for Joe Saunders (11-16, 5.26 ERA).
Alex Rios, RF3/6/2014 2:26:00 PM
Description: Right fielder Alex Rios has suffered a mild right oblique strain.
Insight: Rios will likely sit out a week or two and could be a little behind when the regular season begins. He's a quiet fantasy star who contributes to all categories (.278, 18 HR, 83 runs, 81 RBI, 42 SB in 2013), but rarely gets a lot of attention.
Elvis Andrus, SS3/5/2014 1:22:00 PM
Description: Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus (forearm) returned to the lineup Wednesday, according to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Andrus has been dealing with flexor tendinitis. The shortstop hit .313 with four home runs, 36 RBI, 41 runs, 23 steals and a .774 OPS in the second half last season after batting .242 with a .580 OPS before the break.
Joe Saunders, SP3/5/2014 10:37:00 AM
Description: The Rangers have finalized a one-year contract with lefty Joe Saunders.
Insight: The Rangers needed some starting pitching depth with Matt Harrison coming back from back surgery, Derek Holland out until midseason following microfracture knee surgery and Alexi Ogando presenting a health risk. Saunders had a 1.60 WHIP and gave up 25 homers in 183 innings for Seattle last season. That's not a good combination, especially now that he'll be pitching at Rangers Ballpark instead of Safeco Field.
Joe Saunders, SP3/4/2014 6:26:00 PM
Description: Former Angels and Diamondbacks lefthander Joe Saunders is close to signing with Texas. SOURCE: Evan Grant, Dallas Morning News
Insight: It sounds like Saunders will receive a major league contract. The Rangers struggled with pitching last season (4.31 ERA was 26th in MLB) but we don't think Saunders (11-16, 5.26 ERA for Seattle in 2013) is the answer.
Neftali Feliz, RP3/2/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: According to the Dallas Morning News, Rangers reliever Neftali Feliz is dealing with mechanical issues. He's not getting his arm extended enough to maximize his velocity.
Insight: Feliz underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2012 and only threw 4 2/3 innings last season. He saved 72 games with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 2010-11 before the team turned him into a starter in 2012, and the Rangers have him back competing for the closer job this season following his injury. Joakim Soria is the other candidate.
Jurickson Profar, 2B2/26/2014 4:37:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar (shoulder) has resumed throwing, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
Insight: Profar has been dealing with shoulder tendinitis since the start of camp. The 20-year-old was considered the top prospect in baseball going into 2013 but hit just .234 with a .644 OPS in 85 games. He's expected to start at second base this season after Ian Kinsler was traded to the Tigers.
Yu Darvish, SP2/25/2014 7:58:00 PM
Description: Yu Darvish has already been named the Rangers' Opening Day starter. SOURCE: Richard Durrett, ESPN Dallas
Insight: That means he'll get the start March 31st against Philadelphia. The 277 strikeouts Darvish (13-9, 2.83 ERA) racked up last season were the most we've seen in the majors since 2004. That year, Randy Johnson led the league with 290 K's.
Matt Harrison, SP2/24/2014 7:40:00 PM
Description: Matt Harrison's MRI came back clean. The Texas lefthander has been dealing with lower back stiffness. SOURCE: Richard Durrett, ESPN Dallas
Insight: That's good news for Harrison but he's still a long shot for Opening Day. Fantasy owners need to be very cautious after injuries limited Harrison to just two starts last season.
Jurickson Profar, 2B2/22/2014 7:24:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar (shoulder) has been cleared to resume swinging a bat, according to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Geovany Soto, C2/22/2014 12:01:00 PM
Description: Rangers catcher Geovany Soto will have arthroscopic surgery on his left foot on Saturday, according to Anthony Andro of Fox Sports Southwest.
Insight: Soto is expected to sit for three weeks before resuming spring training work. He batted .245 with nine homers and 22 RBI in 54 games last season.
Leonys Martin, CF2/20/2014 11:28:00 AM
Description: Rangers center fielder Leonys Martin is projected to bat ninth in manager Ron Washington's preliminary lineup, according to a Dallas Morning News report.
Insight: Martin hit .260 with eight home runs, 49 RBI, 66 runs, 36 steals last season, but looking deeper into the numbers he knocked in 40 percent of his RBIs from the top spot in just 28 percent of his at-bats. The good news is that his batting average and OPS were higher at the bottom of the order.
Nelson Cruz, RF2/18/2014 8:43:00 PM
Description: The Orioles are trying to make one more big move before Opening Day. That move could be to sign Nelson Cruz to a long-term deal.
Insight: The O's inked righthander Ubaldo Jimenez to a four-year deal yesterday and now appear to be in pursuit of Cruz and Kendrys Morales. According to Fox's Ken Rosenthal, Baltimore prefers the outfielder Cruz over Morales, who mostly functions as a DH.
Jurickson Profar, 2B2/18/2014 12:11:00 PM
Description: It only took one day for optimism to fall by the wayside as Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar (shoulder) was cleared to start a throwing on Monday and shut down on Tuesday, according to mlblogs.com.
Insight: The 20-year-old was considered the top prospect in baseball last season but hit just .234 with a .644 OPS in 85 games. This isn't the way to bounce back from last season.
Jurickson Profar, 2B2/17/2014 7:26:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar (shoulder) has been cleared to start a throwing program, according to Anthony Andro of foxsportssouthwest.com.
Insight: Profar has been slowed by tendinitis in his right shoulder and will be on the program for 2-3 weeks. However, he'll still be able to DH in spring training games in the meantime. The 20-year-old was considered the top prospect in baseball last season but hit just .234 with a .644 OPS in 85 games. Hopefully he'll find his way now that he has a guaranteed starting job following the trade of Ian Kinsler for Prince Fielder.
Jurickson Profar, 2B2/12/2014 5:11:00 PM
Description: Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar will be limited early in spring training with tendinitis in his shoulder, according to Richard Durrett of espndallas.com.
Insight: Profar can do everything but throw, so he'll still be able to work on his hitting which is the only thing fantasy owners care about. The 20-year-old was considered the top prospect in baseball last season but hit just .234 with a .644 OPS in 85 games. Hopefully he'll find his way now that he has a guaranteed starting job following the trade of Ian Kinsler for Prince Fielder.
Tommy Hanson, SP2/10/2014 11:48:00 AM
Description: Righthander Tommy Hanson has agreed to a minor league deal with Texas. SOURCE: MLBlogs
Insight: Hanson was a valued fantasy asset during his tenure with the Braves, but his ERA has risen every year since 2009. He'll have to prove himself before we can recommend him as a fantasy option.
Daniel Bard, RP2/2/2014 11:29:00 AM
Description: Daniel Bard has agreed to a minor league deal with Texas. SOURCE: Peter Gammons, MLB Network
Insight: Bard's fastball used to hit triple-digits on the radar gun but he hasn't been a factor at the big league level since 2011 when he set up Jonathan Papelbon in Boston. Bard is no lock to make the Rangers' Opening Day roster.
Lance Berkman, DH1/29/2014 7:57:00 PM
Description: Lance Berkman has decided it's time to hang up his cleats.
Insight: Berkman hit .293 with a .943 OPS, 422 doubles, 366 homers, 1,234 RBI and 1,146 runs in 1,879 career games. He played 12 seasons in Houston before going to New York, St. Louis and Texas.
Nelson Cruz, RF1/29/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: The Mariners are emerging as one of the frontrunners to land free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The M's are also in on free agent closer Fernando Rodney. Seattle made a big splash by adding Robinson Cano but they whiffed on Japanese righthander Masahiro Tanaka, who was probably a little out of their price range. Cruz is a .238 career hitter in 48 games at Safeco Field.
Matt Garza, SP1/23/2014 10:52:00 PM
Description: Updating a previous report, the Brewers and Matt Garza are still in talks and no deal is official yet. SOURCE: Brewers on Twitter
Insight: We imagine the deal will be finalized within the next 24 hours. Fox's Ken Rosenthal was the first to report that Garza had signed with Milwaukee for four years and $52 million. It seems like most teams were waiting to see what happened with Masahiro Tanaka before making any big moves. Now that Tanaka is with New York, we should see a lot of free agent signings in the next week.
Matt Harrison, SP1/21/2014 1:14:00 PM
Description: Rangers LHP Matt Harrison (back) threw a bullpen session and felt fine, according to Anthony Andro of foxsportssouthwest.com
Insight: The lefty underwent two surgical procedures on his back in April and made just two starts all last season - both losses. Harrison had low-end fantasy value in both 2011 (14-9, 3.39 ERA) and 2012 (18-11, 3.29 ERA). It remains to be seen if he can return to that level of consistency.
Derek Holland, SP1/14/2014 10:07:00 PM
Description: Rangers pitcher Derek Holland's knee surgery was a microfracture procedure to repair the cartilage behind his left kneecap, according to Richard Durrett of espndallas.com.
Insight: Holland said he hurt his knee when his dog ran up the stairs and tripped him. The lefty is expected to be out until midseason, though he said he believes he could return sooner than projected.
Derek Holland, SP1/10/2014 9:14:00 PM
Description: Texas lefthander Derek Holland injured his knee at home recently and is out indefinitely. SOURCE: Gerry Fraley, Dallas Morning News
Insight: He had surgery on Friday and could be out until mid-season. Perhaps this will give the Rangers more incentive to make a competitive offer to free agent starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka.
Nelson Cruz, RF1/5/2014 10:08:00 PM
Description: With the market quickly drying up for Nelson Cruz, it's possible the former Rangers outfielder will accept a one-year deal and pursue a long-term contract next offseason. SOURCE: Boston Globe
Insight: Cruz was originally hoping for something in the four-year, $75 million range but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. The 33-year-old's market value certainly took a hit after he was suspended 50 games last season for the use of performance enhancing drugs.
Neftali Feliz, RP12/28/2013 1:42:00 PM
Description: According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, Rangers righthander Neftali Feliz is the favorite to replace Joe Nathan in the ninth inning next season.
Insight: Feliz was trying to become a starter but he only lasted seven starts before needing Tommy John surgery. Feliz was an All-Star closer for Texas in 2010 and could be again if he can stay healthy.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF12/21/2013 5:31:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, outfielder Shin-Soo Choo's deal with Texas is for seven years and $130 million.
Insight: Choo turned down a $140 million contract with the Yankees, but the Texas deal is more favorable because the state has no income tax. The 31-year-old hit .285 with a .423 on-base percentage, 21 homers, 20 steals and 107 runs with Cincinnati last season and should duplicate those numbers as Ian Kinsler's replacement at the top of the Rangers' batting order. Choo's contract also means Nelson Cruz will not be returning to Texas.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF12/21/2013 2:18:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, outfielder Shin-Soo Choo has agreed to a deal with the Texas Rangers.
Insight: Choo will take the place of Ian Kinsler at the top of the Texas lineup and with Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre to knock him in, he should easily score 100 runs.
J.P. Arencibia, C12/6/2013 1:36:00 PM
Description: J.P. Arencibia has signed a one-year, $1.8 million deal with Texas.
Insight: Arencibia's power should play well in Texas but he's not going to be a factor in fantasy as Geovany Soto is set to be the team's starter behind the plate.
Colby Lewis, SP11/23/2013 5:26:00 PM
Description: Righthander Colby Lewis has agreed to a minor league deal with Texas. SOURCE: Dallas Morning News
Insight: He wasn't able to play last season because of hip and elbow ailments. Don't be surprised if the 34-year-old carves out a spot for himself at the back end of the Rangers' starting rotation.
Prince Fielder, 1B11/20/2013 8:40:00 PM
Description: According to cbssports.com's Jon Heyman, the Tigers and Rangers have agreed to swap Prince Fielder for Ian Kinsler, pending physicals. Fielder also has to waive his limited no-trade clause that includes Texas, but he's expected to do so.
Insight: Fielder is coming off a down year in which he hit .279 with 25 homers, 106 RBI and an .819 OPS. He's signed for another seven years. Historically, Rangers Ballpark in Arlington has been a much better park for hitters than Comerica Park but it wasn't last season according to MLB Park Factors.
Joe Nathan, RP11/16/2013 11:12:00 AM
Description: The Yankees have been in touch with reliever Joe Nathan about closing for them next season. SOURCE: Andy McCullough, Newark Star-Ledger
Insight: The Tigers are also in need of a closer, though it sounds like Detroit may end up going with Brian Wilson, who is seven years younger than Nathan. The righthander has struggled in four career appearances at the new Yankee Stadium (7.36 ERA in 3 2/3 IP).
Matt Garza, SP11/12/2013 7:44:00 PM
Description: A return to Texas seems unlikely for free agent righthander Matt Garza.
Insight: The Rangers' mid-season acquisition of Garza was always thought of as a rental and now Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is confirming what we already believed. San Francisco has been linked to Garza in recent days though plenty of other teams should come out of the woodwork as the winter rolls on.
Nelson Cruz, RF11/12/2013 7:38:00 PM
Description: Now that right fielder Nelson Cruz has turned down the Rangers' qualifying offer, Seattle may be his next stop. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: Several teams are interested but the Mariners will certainly be one of the frontrunners. Cruz is hoping to land at least a five-year deal. It will be interesting to see if Cruz's PED suspension this past summer has any impact on his negotiations.
A.J. Pierzynski, C11/10/2013 3:15:00 PM
Description: According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox have checked in on free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
Insight: The veteran had a strong year for Texas in 2013 (.272, 17 HR, 70 RBI in 134 games). Pierzynski would be an upgrade over Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a below average defensive catcher who strikes out at an extremely high rate.
Ian Kinsler, 2B11/9/2013 9:55:00 PM
Description: According to Fox's Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers are likely to trade one of their middle infielders this offseason.
Insight: Jurickson Profar is ready to see regular at bats, which means either Ian Kinsler or Elvis Andrus will be shopped over the winter. Kinsler has hit .273 with 156 HR and 539 RBI in 1,066 games for the Rangers since 2006.
Nelson Cruz, RF11/8/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Texas Rangers free agent right fielder Nelson Cruz is expected to turn down the team's qualifying offer and check out the open market.
Insight: Cruz (.269, 27 HR, 76 RBI) has always played in a hitter's park and in a well-stocked lineup so most of the places he might end up signing with will likely hurt his fantasy value.
Martin Perez, SP11/7/2013 10:39:00 PM
Description: The Rangers signed Martin Perez to a four-year contract extension with club options for 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Insight: Perez has been one of Texas' top prospects for several years and finally made a big impact in the big leagues this season. He went 10-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 124 1/3 innings and will be in the rotation next season.
Geovany Soto, C11/5/2013 8:33:00 PM
Description: The Rangers and catcher Geovany Soto have agreed to a one-year, $3.05 million contract. SOURCE: Richard Durrett, ESPN Dallas
Insight: Soto hit .245 with nine homers and 22 RBI in a part-time roll with Texas in 2013. He could be the team's Opening Day starter if the Rangers are unable to retain A.J. Pierzynski in free agency.
Joe Nathan, RP10/19/2013 10:29:00 AM
Description: The expectation is that Rangers closer Joe Nathan will decline his $9.5 million option for next season. SOURCE: MLBlogs
Insight: Nathan has been angling for a long-term deal but we're not sure the Rangers will go for that because of his age (he turns 39 in November). Joakim Soria and Neftali Feliz would both be options to close if Nathan signs elsewhere.
Nelson Cruz, RF9/30/2013 7:07:00 PM
Description: Texas right fielder Nelson Cruz is back in the lineup after missing the last 50 games due to a PED suspension.
Insight: He'll DH and bat sixth. Cruz (.269, 27 HR, 76 RBI) has managed only one hit versus the Rays this season (ten at bats).
Alex Rios, RF9/30/2013 9:46:00 AM
Description: Right fielder Alex Rios is a career .435 hitter (10-for-23) with two homers and seven RBI against Rays left-hander David Price.
Insight: Rios' OPS was down almost 100 points from the previous season, but in a one-game situation you have to go with the favorable matchup and this is one of them.
Nelson Cruz, RF9/30/2013 9:41:00 AM
Description: Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz (50-game PED suspension) is expected to be activated and added to the Rangers' roster for Monday's tiebreaker game, according to Texas general manager Jon Daniels.
Insight: Cruz played in 108 games this season, batting .269 with 27 HR and 76 RBI, but his last live action was Aug 4. On the other hand, Cruz is a career .500 hitter (6-for-12) with a pair of homers versus Monday's starter David Price.
Ian Kinsler, 2B9/27/2013 9:50:00 AM
Description: Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler is a .500 lifetime hitter against Angels starter C.J. Wilson with four extra base hits and a 1.516 OPS.
Insight: The second baseman has just four home runs in 64 games after the All-Star break. What happened to the days of him hitting 30 homers and stealing 30 bases?
A.J. Pierzynski, C9/26/2013 9:27:00 AM
Description: Texas catcher A.J. Pierzynski is just 1-for-15 (.067) in his career against Angels pitcher Jerome Williams.
Insight: Pierzynski hasn't been as good as he was during a career year in 2012, but with 17 homers and 66 RBI in 129 games he hasn't regressed to his 2010-2011 season averages of eight homers and 52 RBI either. He should be benched Thursday with Williams on the hill, however.
Adrian Beltre, 3BHot9/26/2013 9:25:00 AM
Description: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has hit .417 (10-for-24) with two home runs against Jerome Williams of the Angels, who will start Thursday against Texas.
Insight: Beltre has put together his fourth straight season of top-notch production, hitting .317 with 29 homers, 90 RBI, 85 runs and an .883 OPS. He has averaged .315 with 36 doubles, 31 homers, 100 RBI, 86 runs and a .904 OPS since 2010.
