Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin (knee) received an injection in his left knee Tuesday and is not in the starting lineup again Wednesday.
Insight: Padres manager Bud Black expected Quentin to return to the lineup Wednesday after he missed Tuesday's game, but the team will try to have him ready for Friday. The outfielder tweaked his knee on a slide at home plate Monday.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin hurt his knee in an awkward slide at home plate Monday and is out of the lineup Tuesday, according to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com.
Insight: Quentin is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday, manager Bud Black said. He's hitting just .178 with four homers this season.
Description: Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin (wrist) was in the batting cage before Monday's game and should head out on a rehab assignment by the end of the week.
Insight: Maybin, who was batting just .091 in 33 at-bats before the injury, can add speed to a fantasy roster. He has stolen 66 bases over the past two season. The rehab assignment should last a week to 10 days.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin is expected to be activated from the paternity list for Saturday's game against Washington.
Insight: Quentin has yet to find his stride, batting just .181 with four homers and a .686 OPS. Perhaps his mind was elsewhere with the birth of his son.
Description: Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera went 4-for-5 with a run, an RBI, a walk and a steal Wednesday against the Orioles.
Insight: Cabrera had just two multi-hit games in the previous 20 games and hit .173 with 28 strikeouts in that span. The shortstop is batting .255 this season and is a strong fantasy contributor for his speed (12 steals).
Description: Padres starter Andrew Cashner gave up five hits and two runs (one earned), walked one and struck out three in 7 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Orioles.
Insight: The hard-throwing Cashner has gone 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA and an 18/11 K/BB in 28 2/3 innings since rejoining the rotation on April 20. He began the season in the bullpen after suffering a lacerated tendon in his thumb during a hunting accident in December.
Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard (intestinal virus) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Tucson Thursday.
Insight: Richard battled the virus in April and lost 12 pounds. That might explain why he has allowed 37 hits, seven homers and 25 earned runs and walked 17 batters in 26 1/3 innings this season.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin is 3-for-9 against Tampa Bay starter Roberto Hernandez with a pair of home runs and a 1.500 OPS.
Insight: Quentin homered in the first game of the series, but that's his only hit in his last 24 at-bats. Perhaps this matchup will get him going in the right direction.
Description: San Diego outfielder Will Venable homered and stole two bases Friday against the Rays.
Insight: Venable has hit three homers in the last five games and has five round-trippers and seven steals on the year to go with his usual low average (.244).
Description: Padres starter Edinson Volquez allowed two runs on three hits in six innings Friday against the Rays in a no decision.
Insight: Volquez came in having won three straight starts and he exited with the lead, but Dale Thayer blew it. Volquez, as usual, has walked a ton of batters (20 BB in 43 2/3 IP), but unlike last year he also has given up a lot of hits (48) while striking out just 24 batters.
Description: Padres starter Jason Marquis has thrown three straight quality starts.
Insight: He shut out the Marlins on five hits over eight innings in his latest start Wednesday. Marquis only has a 26/20 K/BB in 44 innings, but he can be used in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues in the right matchups.
Description: Padres outfielder Mark Kotsay only gets a spot start every now and then, but Wednesday would be the spot as he's a career .615 hitter (8-for-13) versus Miami hurler Ricky Nolasco.
Insight: Kotsay only has 26 at-bats all season, mainly in a pinch hitting role, but he is batting .308 and could find himself in Wednesday's starting lineup because of the favorable matchup. If he is, he could be worth a flier.
Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard (intestinal virus) has been placed on the disabled list, according to UTSanDiego.com.
Insight: Richard lost 12 pounds since battling flu-like symptoms in April, according to manager Bud Black. Perhaps that explains why he has allowed 37 hits and 25 earned runs in 26 1/3 innings this season. Tyson Ross has been activated, but he will serve as a reliver since he cannot currently swing a bat due to the partial dislocation of his left shoulder that he suffered last month. San Diego will go with a four-man rotation for the next week.
Description: San Diego outfielder Will Venable is batting .208 with two homers, four steals and 22 strikeouts in 72 at-bats this season.
Insight: Venable can usually be counted on to put up some production against right-handers, but he is 1-for-19 (.053) over his last 10 games has poor career numbers against Sunday's opposing starter Ian Kennedy (5-for-29, 10 K).
Description: San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera is 2-for-14 (.143) with seven strikeouts against Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy.
Insight: Cabrera's average (.259) has dipped down to the expected level after a hot start. He's a valuable fantasy commodity for his speed (8 SB), but Kennedy has mostly prevented him from getting on base when they face off.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin was scratched from Friday night's starting lineup.
Insight: According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, he's dealing with a "balky" knee. Jesus Guzman (.239, 0 HR, 2 RBI) will take over for Quentin in left field.
Description: San Diego third baseman Chase Headley will go up against Cubs lefty Travis Wood on Thursday. Headley has only faced Wood 12 times, but six of those at bats have resulted in hits.
Insight: Two of Headley's six hits against Wood have gone for home runs. We wouldn't be surprised if Headley (.280, 3 HR, 6 RBI) goes deep again Thursday at Wrigley Field.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley, who was 6-for-33 in his first nine games since returning from the DL, went 3-for-3 with a solo home run Sunday against the Giants.
Insight: Headley suffered a left thumb fracture in mid-March and missed the first two weeks of the regular season before returning on April 17. He was a major surprise last year, hitting 31 homers and driving in an NL-leading 115 runs.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin is not in the Padres' starting lineup for Sunday. No injury has been reported, so we will assume it's simply a day off for rest.
Insight: Quentin has played four games since an eight-game ban for charging the mound. He's 4-for-16 with one homer and three RBI over the four-game span.
Description: Padres righty Andrew Cashner has been confirmed as the starter for Friday's game against the Giants, according to Eno Sarris of FanGraphs.com.
Insight: Cashner started the season in the bullpen after suffering a thumb injury during a hunting accident in December, but he'll take Tyson Ross' spot in the rotation. He possesses a blazing fastball and showed potential after becoming a starter last June, but a strained lat knocked him out shortly after and he didn't return to action until September. Owners in 12-team leagues should give him a shot.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin has served his eight game suspension and will be eligible to return Tuesday night against Milwaukee.
Insight: Some people thought that Quentin got off easy by only getting an eight game ban. He hasn't been a productive fantasy player since joining the Padres at the start of the 2012 campaign (.254, 16 HR, 49 RBI).
Description: Padres outfielder Kyle Blanks suffered a cut above his left eye Sunday against San Francisco. SOURCE: Corey Brock, MLB.com
Insight: He needed four stitches to close the gash. Blanks has been starting in left while Carlos Quentin serves his eight-game suspension for fighting Dodgers starter Zack Greinke. Blanks (.250, 1 HR, 3 RBI) won't have any fantasy relevance when Quentin returns.
Description: San Diego first baseman Yonder Alonso is getting the afternoon off Sunday against San Francisco.
Insight: He's probably sitting out because lefthander Barry Zito is on the hill for the Giants. Alonso is batting just .238 against southpaws this season.
Description: Padres starter Tyson Ross has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sublaxed left (non-throwing) shoulder.
Insight: Ross has a 3.86 ERA this season, but he has thrown less than five innings in two of his three starts and 5 1/3 in the other and owns a 1.71 WHIP. It's unclear who will take his scheduled start Tuesday, though the team could opt to move up Clayton Richard, who was scratched Saturday due to the flu.
Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday because of the flu. Andrew Cashner will start in his place. SOURCE: Corey Brock, MLB.com
Insight: Richard gave up seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings to the Mets in his first start but has allowed just two over his last 11 innings. The left-hander should be fine for his next turn.
Description: Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso should probably get the day off Saturday as he's just 1-for-12 with five strikeouts against Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum.
Insight: Alonso is hitting .288 with two homers and eight RBI, but this is a matchup to avoid.
Description: San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera is hitless in 11 career at-bats against San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner with five strikeouts.
Insight: Cabrera, a .243 hitter, is batting .298 this season with an impressive .850 OPS, but this matchup should be avoided. Fantasy owners like him for his speed, he stole a league-leading 44 bases last season, but it's hard to add to your stolen base total if you can't get on first.
Description: Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin has been placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained right wrist, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Maybin is hitting just .091 in 33 at-bats and was scratched from Tuesday's lineup. He has been bothered by a wrist injury on-and-off over the past two years.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday against the Dodgers and ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw.
Insight: Headley doesn't have a good track record against Kershaw, batting just .184 in 38 at-bats with a .421 OPS and eight strikeouts. A smart fantasy owner would leave him on the bench for one more day.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Headley fractured the tip of his left thumb on March 17. He'll play one more rehab game Tuesday. The 28-year-old led the National League in RBIs last season and hit a career-high 31 homers.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Tuesday and if that happens he'll have a favorable matchup against Dodgers left-hander Chris Capuano.
Insight: Headley is a career .400 hitter versus Capuano with a homer and a 1.371 OPS. He
fractured the tip of his thumb on March 17 and began a rehab assignment on Friday.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin has dropped his appeal of an eight-game suspension and will begin serving it on Sunday.
Insight: Quentin charged the mound after being hit by Dodgers starter Zack Greinke in Thursday's game. Greinke broke his collarbone, so the suspension was likely made much worse than it would have been in a normal bench-clearing brawl.
Description: Scott Bair from the Associated Press is reporting that Padres outfielder Mark Kotsay has been battling a strained hamstring.
Insight: For now, it doesn't look like Kotsay will have to go on the DL. He's mostly been limited to pinch-hitting duty this season and shouldn't warrant any real fantast consideration at this point.
Description: San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera extended his hitting streak to five games Saturday in a loss to Colorado.
Insight: Cabrera went 4-for-5 with two RBI. His solo home run in the seventh inning (a 410-foot missile over the center field fence) was his first round-tripper of the season and the sixth of his major league career.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin (wrist) will be suspended for eight games for charging the mound against Dodgers starter Zack Greinke Thursday night, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
Insight: Greinke suffered a broken collarbone in the ensuing brawl, which likely added some games onto Quentin's suspension. MLB hasn't made an official announcement yet, and Quentin is batting cleanup in Friday's lineup. He'll be able to appeal the suspension, so there's no way he won't play Friday.
Description: Padres beat writer Corey Brock predicted Thursday that third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) would start his minor league rehab assignment Sunday but he will actually begin it Friday at Single-A Advanced Lake Elsinore. SOURCE: Darren Smith, 1090 AM San Diego
Insight: Headley fractured the tip of his thumb on March 17. His thumb is fine to hit but he's still feeling some pain when closing his glove, so he'll DH initially and will probably need a week or 10 days before he returns to the big leagues.
Description: Padres beat writer Corey Brock predicts that third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) will begin his rehab assignment Sunday.
Insight: Headley fractured the tip of his thumb on March 17. His thumb is fine to hit but he's still feeling some pain when closing his glove, so he'll likely need a week or two before he's able to return to the big leagues.
Description: Padres catcher Nick Hundley piled on four hits Wednesday in a loss to the Dodgers.
Insight: Hundley had quite a night but with a .240 career average, we're going to need to see a lot more of this before we can recommend him in fantasy.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) took batting practice from both sides of the plate Wednesday, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Headley, who was a pleasant surprise last season (.286, 95 runs, 31 HR, 115 RBI, 17 SB), fractured the top of his thumb on March 17. He could be back in the big leagues by the end of the month.
Description: Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera is just 1-for-14 in his career against Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley with four strikeouts.
Insight: Cabrera's primary fantasy value is through the stolen base, but it's hard to get any if you can't get on first base. He's batting just .192 over the first seven games and also has the Biogenesis issue hanging over his head. Seek shortstop help elsewhere.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin's X-rays came back negative. He was hit on the right wrist and had to leave Tuesday's game. SOURCE: Corey Brock, MLB.com
Insight: Quentin has been hit 60 times over the last three seasons and 114 times in his career, so he should be used to this by now. We'll call him day-to-day.
Description: San Diego outfielder Will Venable went 2-for-3 with two walks, one homer, one steal and four RBIs Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Venable came into Tuesday with two hits in his first 15 at-bats. He's a lock to hit close to 10 homers and steal 25 bases, but he's a career .252 hitter.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley (thumb) hit off a tee and took grounders before Tuesday's game. He said his thumb is "healing like it's supposed to." SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Headley, who was a pleasant surprise last season (.286, 95 runs, 31 HR, 115 RBI, 17 SB), fractured the top of his thumb on March 17. He could be back in the big leagues by the end of the month.
Description: Padres rookie infielder Jedd Gyorko had his first multi-hit game Saturday against the Rockies. He went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Insight: Gyorko is three starts or seven appearances away from second-base eligibility. He has started off 5-for-19 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs. Gyorko had 30 homers and 100 RBIs in 499 at-bats between Double-A and Triple-A last season.
Description: San Diego lefty Eric Stults held the Mets scoreless over five innings and struck out seven batters Thursday.
Insight: The Mets came in 2-0 with 19 runs scored. Stults went 8-3 with a 2.92 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 92 1/3 innings last season and should be a solid NL-only starter this season.
Description: San Diego lefty Clayton Richard was crushed by the Mets Wednesday for seven earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three homers, walked two and struck out one.
Insight: Richard had a 3.99 ERA last season but that was aided by a 3.02 mark at Petco Park. He went 6-9 with a 4.74 ERA on the road.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley is taking some soft ground balls and working with weights, according to the team's website. He is expected to miss the first month of the season with a broken thumb.
Insight: Headley was a pleasant surprise last season (.286, 95 runs, 31 HR, 115 RBI, 17 SB) and pre-injury was being drafted among the top-20.
Description: Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner will start the season in the bullpen as he builds up his arm in long relief. Cashner got a late start to his spring after undergoing thumb surgery in December.
Insight: Cashner needed emergency surgery after lacerating a tendon in his thumb while hunting. His thumb is fine now but he's still building up stamina. He offers mixed league upside as a hard-throwing starter but it's unclear when he'll rejoin the rotation.
Description: Tyson Ross was begin the season as San Diego's fifth starter.
Insight: Of all the young pitchers called up by Oakland last season, Ross was the only one who didn't have any fantasy value. He went 2-11 with a 6.50 ERA and 1.81 WHIP. Pitching in Petco Park won't be much different from O.co Coliseum, where Ross posted a 5.23 ERA last season.
Description: Padres manager Bud Black said that Jedd Gyorko will start at second or third base depending on the opposing pitcher. SOURCE: Corey Brock, MLB.com
Insight: Gyorko will play third against righties and second against lefties, with Cody Ransom playing third against lefties and Alexi Amarista playing second against righties. The important thing is that Gyorko will be in the lineup every day. However, Gyorko doesn't have second base eligibility yet and will take longer to get it due to the injuries to everyday third baseman Chase Headley and backup Logan Forsythe.
Description: Padres infielder Logan Forsythe will miss at least six weeks with plantar fasciitis, manager Bud Black said. SOURCE: Tyler Emerick, MLB.com
Insight: Forsythe was expected to start at third base in place of the injured Chase Headley. The team will have to move Jedd Gyorko back to third base and start Alexi Amarista at second.
Description: Padres infielder Logan Forsythe is expected to begin the season on the DL after aggravating his plantar fasciitis on Tuesday, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Forsythe was expected to start at third base in place of the injured Chase Headley. The team will have to move Jedd Gyorko back to third base and start Alexi Amarista at second.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin (knee) made his spring debut Tuesday and said he was encouraged by how his knee felt. SOURCE: Corey Brock, MLB.com
Insight: The injury-prone Quentin (.261, 16 HR, 46 RBI in 2012) has never played more than 131 games in any of his seven major league seasons and averages just 100 games per season. He has been sidelined this spring after having knee surgery at the end of the season.
Description: San Diego has released righthander Freddy Garcia.
Insight: Garcia could have won himself a spot in the starting rotation but instead he imploded this spring, compiling an 8.71 ERA in six appearances. Garcia is well past his prime and at this point there's no reason for fantasy owners to continue keeping tabs on him.
Description: Padres manager Bud Black said right-hander Andrew Cashner (thumb) is not "out of the question" to be ready for Opening Day, but added that "it's going to be a close call," according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Cashner needed emergency surgery after lacerating a tendon in his thumb while hunting back in December. His thumb is fine now but he's still building up stamina. He offers mixed league upside as a hard-throwing starter.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley is expected to miss the first month of the season with a broken thumb.
Insight: This should knock Headley down a peg or two in the fantasy rankings. James Darnell could see some time at third while Headley recovers though we're not expecting him to be of much use to fantasy owners (.226, 2 HR, 8 RBI in 62 major league at bats).
Description: Third baseman Chase Headley is dealing with a thumb injury and may not be ready for the season opener, according to the Padres website.
Insight: Headley is coming off his best season (.286, 31 HR, 115 RBI, 17 SB) and should be a top five fantasy third baseman in 2013, even if he isn't ready for the opener.
Description: According to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, Jedd Gyorko is expected to be San Diego's starting second baseman, "barring something unforeseen."
Insight: Gyorko was selected in the second round of the MLB Draft in 2010 by San Diego. The 24-year-old blasted 24 homers and had a .968 OPS in 92 games with Triple-A Tucson last season. He should have value in 12-team mixed leagues this season.
Description: Padres 23-year-old right-hander Casey Kelly could be headed for Tommy John surgery, according to the Union-Tribune San Diego. Kelly has dealt with elbow issues since last spring.
Insight: Kelly was one of the prospects San Diego acquired from Boston in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. He posted a 3.35 ERA in 37 2/3 minor league innings last season but gave up 20 earned runs in 29 innings at the big league level. He was expected to compete for a rotation spot.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin (knee) is still out indefinitely despite taking batting practice Wednesday for the second day in a row, according to Padres.com. He was scratched from Monday's lineup with discomfort in his surgically repaired right knee.
Insight: The injury-prone Quentin (.261, 16 HR, 46 RBI in 2012) has never played more than 131 games in any of his seven major league seasons and averages just 100 games per season. The team is playing it safe with him after he had knee surgery at the end of the season.
Description: Padres starter Andrew Cashner (thumb) will make his spring debut Sunday against the Cubs after being cleared on Thursday.
Insight: Cashner needed emergency surgery after lacerating a tendon in his thumb while hunting back in December. He could still potentially be ready for the start of the season and offers high upside.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin (knee) is still a week to 10 days away from playing in a spring training game. SOURCE: Tyler Emerick, MLB.com
Insight: The injury-prone Quentin (.261, 16 HR, 46 RBI in 2012) has never played more than 131 games in any of his seven major league seasons and averages just 100 games per season. The team is playing it safe with him after he had knee surgery at the end of the season but he is expected to be ready for the season opener.
Description: Padres infielder Jedd Gyorko has three homers and nine RBIs in four spring games.
Insight: Gyorko was selected in the second round of the MLB Draft in 2010 by San Diego. The 24-year-old blasted 24 homers and had a .968 OPS in 92 games with Triple-A Tucson last season. He has a good shot at breaking camp with the starting second base job, which would give him draft value in mixed leagues.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin (second surgery on right knee in offseason) has been hitting and jogging this spring, but is expected to be limited in his appearances.
Insight: The injury-prone Quentin (.261, 16 HR, 46 RBI in 2012) has never played more than 131 games in any of his seven major league seasons and averages just 100 games per season. He's a high-risk selection, but does provide power when actually on the field. If you choose him, you must make sure your roster as extra outfield depth.
Description: Five more professional baseball players have been linked to the Biogenesis of America clinic run by Anthony Bosch, including Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera. SOURCE: ESPN.com
Insight: The other players were Athletics reliever Jordan Norberto, Astros outfielder Fernando Martinez, Padres reliever Fautino De Los Santos and Mets outfield prospect Cesar Puello. Sources said the players were on a list as having received PEDs. Cabrera is the only one of the five with fantasy appeal after he led the National League in steals last season.
Description: According to the Padres' website, center fielder Cameron Maybin missed Monday's workout because of a sore right wrist.
Insight: Maybin (.243, 8 HR, 45 RBI, 26 SB last season) says the wrist is feeling better and he's hoping to return to action in a few days. This news shouldn't affect Maybin's fantasy standing heading into the 2013 campaign.
Description: The Padres have come to a one-year agreement with starting pitcher Clayton Richard.
Insight: Now the two sides won't have to go to arbitration. Richard put together a solid 3.99 ERA last season but that was obviously aided by the pitcher-friendly conditions at Petco Park (8-5, 3.02 ERA at Petco, 6-9, 4.74 everywhere else).
Description: San Diego Padres minor league outfielder Rymer Liriano will miss the entire 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com
Insight: Liriano is a solid prospect who batted .280 last season with 32 SB for Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. He probably would not have been brought up this season, though he was added to their 40-man roster, but this injury will delay his progress by a year.
Description: Third baseman Chase Headley agreed to a one-year, $8.575 million deal with the Padres earlier this week.
Insight: By doing so, the two sides were able to avoid arbitration. Headley is coming off his best season (.286, 31 HR, 115 RBI) and should be a top five fantasy third baseman in 2013.
Description: Freddy Garcia has inked a minor league deal with San Diego.
Insight: Petco Park is probably the most pitcher-friendly stadium in the majors so if Garcia wanted to resurrect his career, this is probably the best place to do it. Garcia struggled to a 7-6 record and a 5.20 ERA in 30 appearances last season but keep in mind that he was pitching in the AL East, one of the most competitive divisions in MLB.
Description: Padres starter Andrew Cashner is expected to start the season on the disabled list after suffering a lacerated tendon in his right thumb in early December, San Diego GM Josh Byrnes said. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Cashner needed emergency surgery after cutting his hand while trimming an animal carcass. Several spots in the Padres' rotation are certainly up for grabs but Cashner will have a difficult time winning one if he can't pitch.
Description: Padres starter Andrew Cashner will be sidelined for three months after being stabbed in the thumb by a friend in a hunting accident. The two were trimming an animal carcass.
Insight: Cashner lacerated a tendon and needed surgery. The young right-hander has an electric fastball and showed potential in taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his second career start, but he missed two months with a strained lat and will be hard-pressed to win a rotation spot in spring training if he's unable to pitch.
Description: Starting pitcher Jason Marquis re-signed with the Padres Monday for one year and $3 million.
Insight: Marquis started pitching much better after he came to San Diego last season (4.04 ERA in 15 starts compared to 8.47 earlier in the year with Minnesota) but he's still not much of a fantasy option.
Description: The San Diego Padres have officially announced that they will move in the fences at Petco Park next season. The left- and center-field dimensions will remain the same, while right field, right-center field and left-center field will be moved in 11, 11 and 12 feet, respectively.
Insight: Petco Park has been a bane to hitters since it opened due to its massive power alleys but this should help hitters like Chase Headley next season. Headley broke out with 31 homers and an NL-leading 115 RBIs in 2012 but he hit just .272 with 13 homers and 51 RBIs at home compared to .300, 18 and 64 on the road.
Description: Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera finished first in the NL in stolen bases with 44 despite playing just 115 games.
Insight: Mike Trout won the AL crown with 49 in 139 games, but Cabrera was actually a more prolific base stealer. The shortstop was only caught four times.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley led the National League with 115 RBI in 2012.
Insight: Headley overcame a tepid first half (.267, 8 HR, 42 RBI) by exploding for 23 homers and 73 RBI after the All-Star break. If the Padres were thinking of moving the star third baseman, Headley's trade value might never be higher than it is right now.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin will have a second surgery on his right knee during the offseason.
Insight: Quentin (.261, 16 HR, 46 RBI) missed 76 games this year because of knee injuries including all of April and most of May. He should be recovered by the time Spring Training rolls around.
Description: San Diego outfielder Cameron Maybin is getting the afternoon off Sunday against San Francisco.
Insight: Maybin (.244, 7 HR, 43 RBI) is in the middle of a big time slump (one for his last 17), plus he has a poor track record against Tim Lincecum (.182 lifetime average in 22 trips to the plate against Lincecum). It makes sense that the Padres have opted to keep him on the sidelines for today's matchup.
Description: San Diego center fielder Cameron Maybin is 0-for-14 in his last four games, and he has an unfavorable matchup Sunday against Giants starter Tim Lincecum.
Insight: Maybin has been a massive disappointment this season after looking to be on the rise in 2011. The outfielder will be hardpressed to end his hitless streak Sunday -- he's just 4-for-22 with seven strikeouts against Lincecum.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin is not listed in Saturday night's starting lineup. Quentin has missed most of the past two and a half weeks while recovering from a right knee injury.
Insight: Quentin (.262, 16 HR, 46 RBI) appeared as a pinch-hitter in Friday night's game, which could suggest that he is getting closer to a return. Don't be surprised if Quentin is back in the lineup some time before the end of the regular season.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin will miss his third game in a row Saturday because of a knee injury.
Insight: Quentin hasn't played since Wednesday and overall, he's missed 11 of the team's past 14 games. With the Padres well out of playoff contention, it's possible Quentin (.263, 16 HR, 45 RBI) could be shut down for the year if he doesn't show any progress over the next couple of days.
Description: According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, Padres closer Huston Street will be activated in time for Friday's game with the Giants.
Insight: Street was on track to come off the DL at the start of September but he felt discomfort in his calf and had to be scratched from a rehab appearance. Nearly three weeks later, he'll try again.
Description: Padres starter Andrew Cashner will be shut down for the remainder of the year while he deals with an injured lat.
Insight: Cashner's potent fastball makes him an interesting fantasy target for next season, though his injury history could cause him to fall into the later rounds on draft day.
Description: San Diego center fielder Cameron Maybin is out for Wednesday's game because of an Achilles injury.
Insight: Maybin (.248, 7 HR, 43 RBI, 25 SB) missed Tuesday's contest for the same reason. Will Venable (.255, 9 HR, 42 RBI) will take over in Maybin's place.
Description: After a nine-day absence, outfielder Carlos Quentin has returned to the San Diego starting lineup.
Insight: He'll start in left field Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. Quentin (.262, 16 HR, 45 RBI) had missed the Padres' previous six games while dealing with a knee injury. He's hitting .208 this month with one home run and two RBI.
Description: According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, Padres manager Bud Black said Huston Street could be activated as early as Wednesday. The San Diego closer hasn't pitched since Aug. 10 due to a strained left calf.
Insight: Street was on track to come off the DL at the start of September but he felt discomfort in his calf and had to be scratched from a rehab appearance. Nearly three weeks later, he'll try again.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin (knee) is not in the lineup Tuesday.
Insight: Quentin hasn't played in more than a week due to a sore right knee. The Padres haven't given a timetable for his return so consider him out indefinitely.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin is not in the lineup again Saturday due to knee soreness.
Insight: Quentin has missed four straight starts. He's only logged 24 at-bats this month so you can consider dropping him for immediate help with the season winding down.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin will miss Friday night's series opener against the Rockies because of soreness in his right knee. This will be the third game in a row that Quentin has missed.
Insight: San Diego had hoped Quentin (.262, 16 HR, 45 RBI) would be able to play on Friday but now they'll have to shoot for a Saturday or Sunday return.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin (knee) is out of the Padres lineup again Wednesday. The team is hoping he'll be ready to go Friday, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Quentin has appeared in just two games since Sept. 5 due to soreness in his surgically-repaired knee. San Diego has an off day Thursday so we'll see how Quentin feels Friday.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin will miss Tuesday's game against St. Louis because of a sore right knee.
Insight: Quentin has now missed three out of the Padres' last five games with this injury. Alexi Amarista (.257, 5 HR, 30 RBI) is getting the start in left field tonight versus the Cardinals.
Description: San Diego third baseman Chase Headley now leads the National League in RBIs with 102.
Insight: What more can be said about Headley? The third baseman has 19 homers and 60 RBIs in 54 second-half games and he's hitting .389 with five homers and 19 RBIs in eight games this month. San Diego was already asking for a huge haul for Headley at the trade deadline; after this surge, he may be untouchable.
Description: San Diego third baseman Chase Headley's career year continued Friday when he blasted two bombs and drove in four.
Insight: Headley's previous career high in homers for a season was 12 -- he's hit 18 since the All-Star break. In September, the third baseman is batting .464 with four homers and 15 RBIs in six games, bringing his season line to .287, 26 HRs, 98 RBIs, 77 runs and 14 steals.
Description: Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner made his first start Friday since returning from the disabled list, and it went well. Cashner allowed two runs on four hits in five innings against Arizona.
Insight: Cashner, a talented righty with a blazing fastball, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his second start of the season but he strained his lat in his following turn and missed two months. The youngster has tremendous strikeout potential and he's displayed solid control in his three most recent starts, recording a 16/1 K/BB in 13 1/3 innings.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin is on the sidelines for Friday's game versus Arizona. Quentin is dealing with some irritation in his right knee.
Insight: Quentin's knee has been acting up lately, so don't be surprised if he misses a few days here and there down the stretch. Jesus Guzman (.251, 6 HR, 35 RBI) will take over in left tonight against the Diamondbacks.
Description: San Diego second baseman Alexi Amarista went 5-for-5 with a pair of RBI Sunday in a loss to the Rockies.
Insight: Amarista (.267, 5 HR, 30 RBI) isn't an everyday player for the Padres but he may have just earned himself some extra playing time following Sunday's monster effort.
Description: San Diego third baseman Chase Headley contributed four hits and six RBI Sunday in an 11-10 loss to the Rockies.
Insight: Headley underachieved during the season's first half (.267, 8 HR, 42 RBI) but since the All-Star break he has been terrific, hitting .308 with 15 homers and 47 RBI in 185 at bats.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin has had a solid season, recording 15 homers and an .881 OPS in 74 games, but Sunday does not present a favorable matchup to the slugger.
Insight: Quentin had five homers and a .917 OPS in August but he is just 3-for-20 (.150) with two RBIs in his career against Rockies starter Jeff Francis. Francis isn't an imposing presence on the mound so rolling with Quentin Sunday wouldn't be a terrible strategy, but past history suggests he'll struggle.
Description: Injured closer Huston Street is expected to make his return to the major leagues on Sunday. The Padres reliever has been out since August 10th with a strained left calf.
Insight: The bullpen duo of Dale Thayer and Luke Gregorson won't hold much fantasy value upon Street's return from injury.
Description: Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso is taking the night off Monday against Atlanta.
Insight: He's 6-for-12 over his last three games and since the All-Star break Alonso is hitting .303 with four homers and 23 RBI. He had 23 RBI total during the season's first half.
Description: The Padres' 22-year-old right-hander Casey Kelly will make his big league debut on Monday versus Atlanta.
Insight: Kelly made eight minor league starts this season and pitched well despite an 0-2 record. Look beyond the won/loss record and see that he had 39 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings while walking just three batters. He could be a September surprise.
Description: San Diego starter Jason Marquis was moved to the disabled list Thursday because of a broken left wrist.
Insight: Marquis (8-11, 5.22 ERA) was injured after getting hit by a comebacker in his last start Tuesday against the Pirates. Luckily for the Padres, it's Marquis' non-throwing hand so he should be back before the end of the season.
Description: Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera set a single-season record Wednesday. His two steals in two attempts made him 24-for-24 this season, the most steals without a caught stealing in a season.
Insight: Chase Utley held the previous record by going 23-for-23 in 2009. Of course, Cabrera could always lose the record back to Utley by getting caught stealing over the remaining weeks of the season. Cabrera's 24 steals make him attractive to fantasy owners but his low average and lack of power limit him to NL-only leagues.
Description: The Padres will release injured shortstop Jason Bartlett.
Insight: Bartlett hasn't appeared in a game for San Diego since May 14th. Before his knee injury, Bartlett had been hitting just .133 with no home runs and four RBI.
Description: The Giants just couldn't keep up with San Diego starter Clayton Richard on Sunday. In eight innings of work, the lefthander gave up just five hits and one unearned run.
Insight: This effort marked Richard's 10th win of the season. He's now 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA over his last four starts.
Description: Center fielder Cameron Maybin torched the Giants for four hits and three RBI Sunday as the Padres won 7-1.
Insight: Maybin (.219, 6 HR, 37 RBI) had been hitless in the series before Sunday's offensive eruption. He's still hitting just .232 since the start of the month.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley has always had trouble against Giants starter Barry Zito, hitting .241 in 29 at-bats against the left-hander.
Insight: The switch-hitting Headley is having a career year on the strength of a phenomenal August (.317, 7 HRs, 21 RBIs in 16 games) but Zito has always had his number and Saturday would be a good day to get him on the bench if you have a better option.
Description: San Diego outfielder Cameron Maybin is getting the night off Friday against San Francisco.
Insight: Maybin is batting .191 this month, which actually isn't that much worse than his season average of .214. Even the 20 stolen bases (sixth in the NL) he's amassed can't make up for a batting average that low. The underachieving Maybin should be dropped in all formats.
Description: The Padres aren't expecting injured closer Huston Street to be back with the team until September. Street was placed on the DL earlier in the week because of a strained left calf.
Insight: Interim closer Dale Thayer (3.51 ERA) should be a useful fantasy option while Street (0.75 ERA, 21-for-21 in save opportunities) is out.
Description: Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal (oblique) is expected to start a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A Lake Elsinore, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.
Insight: Grandal hit .312 with five homers in his first 24 games at the big league level, but he injured himself taking a hard swing at the end of July. He may be able to return to the Padres lineup by this weekend.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley has been mashing since he wasn't traded prior to the deadline two weeks ago.
Insight: Headley is hitting .348 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in 12 games this month. Headley also has 11 homers since the All-Star break, which is just one shy of his previous career high for home runs in a full season, a number he has shattered this season with 19 jacks.
Description: Padres righty Jason Marquis collected his fifth career shutout Saturday in a win against Pittsburgh.
Insight: Marquis struck out four while giving up just two hits and one walk. He's now 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA since signing with the Padres back in late May.
Description: San Diego closer Huston Street has been placed on the disabled list with a strained calf.
Insight: Street (0.75 ERA, 21-for-21 in save chances) had been on an incredible run for the Padres, holding his opponents scoreless in each of his last 22 appearances. Look for Dale Thayer (3.60) to take over the closer's role while Street is sidelined.
Description: San Diego third baseman Chase Headley is a career .556 hitter (5-for-9) against Cubs hurler Travis Wood with a pair of homers and a 1.778 OPS.
Insight: Headley (.271, 15 HR, 60 RBI) has batted .318 over the past two weeks and combined with a favorable matchup makes him a must start on Monday.
Description: Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner (lat) is expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, according to Jeff Sanders of the North County Times.
Insight: Cashner hasn't pitched in more than a month due to the strained lat muscle he suffered in his start July 3. The fireballer has tremendous upside so fantasy owners should stash him in hopes that he can return later this month.
Description: Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal (oblique) could begin swinging a bat Monday, according to Jeff Sanders of the North County Times.
Insight: Grandal hit .312 with five homers in his first 24 games at the big league level, but he injured himself taking a hard swing at the end of July. He's eligible to return in mid-August, but we'll have to see how he feels after swinging a bat for the first time since the injury.
Description: San Diego third baseman Chase Headley didn't face a favorable matchup Wednesday against Bronson Arroyo but he does Thursday against Johnny Cueto. He's hitting .455 lifetime versus the Reds starter.
Insight: Headley (.271, 13 HRs, 55 RBIs) managed two hits yesterday to up his hitting streak to five games. There's a good chance he'll make it six in a row Thursday when he faces Cueto (13-5, 2.39 ERA).
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin will watch Wednesday night's game against the Reds from the sidelines.
Insight: Quentin (.265, 10 HRs, 26 RBIs) hit just .213 with three homers and ten RBIs last month but he's been a little bit better since the All-Star break (.259, three homers, nine RBIs).
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley should call in sick Wednesday so he doesn't have to face Reds starter Bronson Arroyo. He's only 3-for-18 (.167) against him in his career.
Insight: Headley (.268, 12 HRs, 52 RBIs) is one of the few San Diego players worth owning in fantasy but even he won't be of much use to you Wednesday versus Cincinnati.
Description: Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal left Monday's game after taking a hard swing, according to the Sacramento Bee. The team announced the backstop has an oblique strain.
Insight: Grandal has quietly provided excellent fantasy numbers in his first 23 big league games, hitting .312 with five homers and 15 RBIs, but the injury will likely cause the rookie to miss some time.
Description: Closer Huston Street and the Padres have agreed to a two-year, $14 million contract extension.
Insight: Street, who appeared in his first All-Star game earlier in the month, has been dominant in his first season in San Diego (17-for-17 in save opportunities, 0.91 ERA in 29.2 innings). The Padres aren't known for giving out huge contracts but this marks the second big signing they've made in the last week as the team also inked outfielder Carlos Quentin (.270, 9 HRs, 23 RBIs) to a new deal last Sunday.
Description: San Diego starter Jason Marquis has found success with the Padres after washing out with Minnesota. In 10 starts with San Diego, Marquis has gone 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and an impressive 56/17 K/BB ratio in 62 innings.
Insight: The right-hander struck out eight in 7 1/3 three-hit innings Wednesday at San Francisco. We wouldn't recommend Marquis as a long-term answer, but he's good enough to use for a spot start, especially when he's pitching at home or against an NL West opponent.
Description: San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin is not in the starting lineup for Monday night's game against the Giants.
Insight: Quentin (.266, 9 HRs, 22 RBIs) is 4-for-8 with a pair of homers against San Francisco this season but he won't get a chance to add to those totals on Monday.
Description: Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin (wrist) is not in the starting lineup for the sixth straight game Monday.
Insight: Maybin hasn't started since last Tuesday due to his injured wrist, but he did steal two bases as a pinch-runner Sunday before playing the field in the ninth inning, so he can't be too far away from returning.
Description: Outfielder Cameron Maybin (wrist) entered as a pinch-runner Sunday, stole two bases and stayed in the game to play defense in the ninth.
Insight: Maybin hasn't started since Tuesday due to his injured wrist, but he did pinch-hit Saturday in addition to his appearance Sunday so he should return soon.
Description: Outfielder Cameron Maybin will miss his third game in a row Friday when the Padres play host to the Rockies. Maybin injured his wrist earlier in the week.
Insight: Maybin had been seven for his last 12 (.583) before the injury. With Maybin sidelined, Alexi Amarista (.299, 4 HRs, 20 RBIs) will make his second start of the season in center field for San Diego.
Description: Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso contributed a trio of RBIs Wednesday in San Diego's 8-4 victory over Houston.
Insight: Alonso (.269, 4 HRs, 30 RBIs), who exploded for a pair of doubles on Wednesday, has had two or more hits in three out of his last four games. He's batting .326 this month with two homers and 12 RBIs.
Description: Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin missed Wednesday afternoon's game against Houston because of a sore right wrist.
Insight: After batting just .183 in June, Maybin (.221, 4 HRs, 26 RBIs) has rebounded to hit .319 through 47 at bats in July. Consider the 25-year-old day-to-day.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin isn't available for Tuesday night's game against Houston but there's a strong chance he'll be able to return to the lineup Wednesday afternoon. Quentin has been out since Sunday with a sore knee.
Insight: Quentin (.266, 8 HRs, 21 RBIs) is 3-12 with one homer and four RBIs to start the second half. He was limited to just 33 games prior to the All-Star break after undergoing knee surgery in late March.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin was scratched from Monday's start due to knee soreness.
Insight: The Padres are clearly taking precaution with Quentin, who missed all of April and most of May following knee surgery and figures to be a popular trade target as we get closer to July 31.
Description: Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin may be one of the players moved at the trade deadline and the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates have shown interest.
Insight: Fantasy owners would likely embrace a move from spacious Petco Park to PNC Park even though Quentin has a .924 OPS this season, 84 points above his career average.
Description: Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer Wednesday against Arizona.
Insight: Since he was recalled on June 30, Grandal has six hits, four of which are home runs. The 23-year-old is someone to target in all fantasy formats, even though the power likely won't last -- Grandal had just six home runs in 194 at-bats with Triple-A Tucson this season.
Description: Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lat injury.
Insight: Cashner will be out at least 3-4 weeks, if not more. The 25-year-old fireballer was recently promoted from the minors after San Diego sent him down to stretch out his arm. In his first start back, Cashner took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, putting him on the radar in mixed leagues.
Description: Padres starter Kip Wells pitched like it was 2003 Sunday against Colorado. Wells shut out the Rockies on six hits and two walks in seven innings to pick up his first win since 2009.
Insight: This was quite a surprise considering the game was played at Coors Field. We don't expect Wells to keep this up, so he can be avoided for now.
Description: Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin will get the afternoon off on Sunday.
Insight: Quentin has slowed down at the plate a little bit as of late but he is still hitting .311 for the season. That's nearly 60 points above his career average (.254).
Description: San Diego's Jason Marquis returned to Colorado, where he won 15 games in 2009, for a start Friday, but things didn't go too well for the right-hander. Marquis gave up five earned runs in six innings.
Insight: The 33-year-old Marquis put together stellar efforts in his first two outings with San Diego, but both of those starts came at Petco Park.
Description: You might be better off leaving San Diego left fielder Carlos Quentin on your bench Friday against the Rockies. He's just 3-16 (.188) in his career against Colorado starter Jeff Francis.
Insight: Quentin is still an excellent player to start in fantasy (.325, 6 HRs, 15 RBIs in 25 games this season). Just not when he's going up against Francis (0-1, 7.23 ERA).
Description: Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Wednesday against Houston in his third career start. Cashner ended up allowing two runs in 6 1/3 while striking out nine.
Insight: Cashner should be added in most leagues, as strikeout pitchers with upside are difficult to come by. The right-hander will stick in the rotation, as San Diego sent him down in early June to stretch his arm out.
Description: San Diego center fielder Cameron Maybin will get the night off Thursday against Houston.
Insight: Maybin has been in a terrible slump (0 for his last 17) and has seen his batting average fall below .200 for the first time since the first week in May. Maybin can still get you stolen bases (he has 16 of them so far in 2012) but right now he's too big of a liability at the plate to be in any fantasy starting lineups.
Description: The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that Kip Wells will start for the Padres Sunday against the Rockies.
Insight: Kip Wells returned to the major leagues for the first time since 2009 to start for the Padres Tuesday. The right-hander allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings and evidently San Diego thought that was worthy of another start. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.
Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard may be just 5-7 with a 3.95 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, but he's been masterful in his last three outings, all wins.
Insight: Richard's last three starts have totaled 21 1/3 IP with a 1.69 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He's faced Seattle twice and Oakland once, so the numbers may be a bit skewed, but he's certainly pitching better than his overall numbers and could be a useful fantasy starter.
Description: Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner will be called up from the minors to start Thursday against Houston.
Insight: San Diego sent Cashner down on June 10 to stretch his arm out, and the righty registered a 1.88 ERA and 22/3 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings. Give him a shot if you need a boost in strikeouts.
Description: San Diego first baseman Yonder Alonso won't play Monday night against the Astros. Alonso strained his right knee Saturday against the Mariners and hasn't played since.
Insight: Alonso (.254, 2 HRs, 18 RBIs) is being listed as day-to-day and there's a good chance we'll see him back in the lineup on Tuesday.
Description: San Diego first baseman Yonder Alonso is expected to miss Monday's game against Houston with a strained right knee.
Insight: Alonso has been a disappointment this season batting .254 with just two homers and 18 RBI. His .670 OPS makes him a non-starter at both his first base position or the outfield.
Description: Padres starter Edinson Volquez shut out Seattle on four hits in 6 2/3 innings Sunday to improve to 4-7. Volquez walked three and struck out four.
Insight: Volquez (4-7, 3.82 ERA) has an 80/54 K/BB ratio in 93 2/3, so he's too risky to start unless he's facing a weak-hitting opponent at home.
Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard will oppose Kevin Millwood and the Mariners at home Friday coming off two straight wins on the road. Richard, owned in eight percent of Yahoo! leagues, is someone deep leaguers should consider streaming.
Insight: Richard (4-7, 3.94) has allowed just one run on 13 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his last two starts, including one against Seattle on June 12. Richard is 2-3 with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in six home starts this season, and 13-14 with a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and .219 BAA in 37 career starts at Petco Park. The lefty has also dominated Seattle in five career starts, going 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.
Description: San Diego first baseman Yonder Alonso will have the night off Monday against the Rangers.
Insight: This is only the third game Alonso has missed all season. He's hitting .256 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 234 at bats for the Padres this year.
Description: Padres starter Clayton Richard shut out Oakland on five hits in 7 2/3 innings Sunday. Richard walked two and struck out six.
Insight: Richard (4-7, 3.94) has allowed just one run on 13 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his last two starts, both wins. However, those starts came against Seattle and Oakland, so don't get too excited about Richard's fantasy prospects.
Description: The Blue Jays and Tigers are both said to be interested in trading for Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin before the July 31st trade deadline.
Insight: Quentin is off to a roaring start for San Diego (.421, 5 HRs, 10 RBIs in 12 fames) and if he keeps this up, he'll be in line for a huge pay day when he becomes a free agent next offseason.
Description: Padres right-hander Ross Ohlendorf will start Saturday at Oakland as Andrew Cashner gets stretched out in the minors.
Insight: Ohlendorf went 12-21 with a solid 3.98 ERA in 50 starts with Pittsburgh in 2009-10, so he might have some value in San Diego if he was staying in the rotation. However, Cashner will come back soon and Ohlendorf will be back in the bullpen. He doesn't even make for a good streaming option Saturday, as San Diego likely won't let him throw many innings.
Description: Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin is questionable for Tuesday's game against Seattle with a sore neck.
Insight: At the moment, Maybin is only contributing to two categories - stolen bases (14) and runs scored (30). A .217 hitting outfielder with a .636 OPS is not a great fantasy value even with double-digit steals.
Description: San Diego outfielder Will Venable hit his fifth homer of the season Sunday against the Brewers. Venable went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the game.
Insight: Venable has five homers and seven steals on the season. Sunday's performance boosts his OPS above .800, so he has some NL-only value.
Description: Padres third baseman Chase Headley went 2-for-4 with two steals Sunday at Milwaukee.
Insight: Headley has seven homers, seven steals and an OPS above .800, making him an attractive NL-only third baseman. Headley is working on an eight-game hitting streak.
Description: Padres starter Anthony Bass gave up four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings Sunday against Milwaukee. Bass walked three and struck out six.
Insight: Bass (2-6) has allowed four earned runs or more in four straight starts after starting out with a 2.89 ERA. The right-hander is someone you only want to use at home, where he is 1-2 with a 3.62 ERA in eight appearances (six starts).
Description: Ross Ohlendorf is expected to move into the Padres' starting rotation while Andrew Cashner is training to become a starter in the minor leagues.
Insight: Ohlendorf has 64 big league starts on his resume so he seems like the logical choice to take the vacant spot in San Diego's rotation. In two appearances with the Padres so far this season, the former Pirate is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA.
Description: Andrew Cashner has been sent down to Double-A San Antonio. The move isn't a demotion: Cashner is simply getting groomed to become a starter after pitching out of the Padres' bullpen all season.
Insight: San Diego really likes the idea of turning their 25-year-old flamethrower into a starter, so he'll spend a few weeks in the minor leagues getting accustomed to his new role. Cashner (3-3, 3.81) has only started two games in his major league career and the most pitches he has thrown in an outing is 72 so it could take him a while to adjust to the increased workload.
Description: Padres leftfielder Carlos Quentin can become a free agent at the end of the year which could mean he's a player coveted by contending teams at the trade deadline.
Insight: Quentin has been on fire since returning from injury, batting .481 with five homers and nine RBI in eight games. Home run guys with his power 25-30 are always in demand if the Padres decide to sell. Any ballpark he would land in would be more benificial to his fantasy statistics.
Description: After San Diego's Andrew Cashner makes a start Saturday against Milwaukee, he'll be optioned to the minors so he can stretch out his arm.
Insight: Cashner (3-3, 3.81 ERA) is needed for a start Saturday but don't expect him to go long in that game. We'll be able to make a better prediction of the right-hander's fantasy value as a starter once we see how he fares in the minors, though he'll have immediate NL-only value when he returns to the big leagues.
Description: San Diego's Jason Marquis allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings in his first start with the team Thursday against San Francisco.
Insight: The 33-year-old Marquis went 2-4 with an 8.47 ERA and 1.94 WHIP in seven starts with Minnesota before getting his pink slip. Marquis went 8-5 with a solid 3.95 ERA in 20 starts with Washington last season before moving on to Arizona and posting a 9.53 ERA in three starts. He also had a 6.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 13 starts with the Nationals in 2010, so there's no guarantee that moving back to the National League is going to boost his fantasy value.
Description: Padres reliever Andrew Cashner will make his second career start Saturday against Milwaukee.
Insight: Cashner (3-3, 3.81 ERA) has been used in the bullpen all year so look for him to throw only three or four innings. Perhaps if he shows good stamina on Saturday, Cashner could be allowed to pitch deeper into the game in future starts.
Description: San Diego lefthander Eric Stults has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained lat.
Insight: Acquired from the White Sox earlier in the season, Stults pitched well in his first two starts with his new team (1-0, 1.54 ERA) before turning a pair of lackluster efforts in his most recent two outings (0-2, 7.11).
Description: Padres leftfielder Carlos Quentin has been red hot since his return from the DL but don't expect him to have a big day Thursday against Matt Cain. Quentin has batted just .133 in 15 career at bats versus the Giants' righthander.
Insight: Quentin has been unbelievable so far in 2012 (.481, 5 HRs, 9 RBIs in seven games) but we're not forecasting a strong performance from him on Thursday.
Description: San Diego outfielder Will Venable is doubtful for Wednesday's game against San Francisco with a strained right oblique.
Insight: Venable's only value in the fantasy world is speed. He's averaged 27 stolen bases over the past two seasons. Unfortunately he comes with a low career batting average (.252) and little power (40 homers in five years).
Description: Just two days after opting out of his minor league deal with the Red Sox, Ross Ohlendorf has agreed to a one-year contract with the Padres.
Insight: Ohlendorf was 4-3 with a 4.61 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A Pawtucket before opting out of his deal on Saturday. A once promising young starter, Ohlendorf went 1-3 with an 8.15 ERA in his last stint in the majors in 2011 as a member of the Pirates.
Description: Huston Street expects to be activated from the DL on Tuesday. Street has been out with a lat injury since early May.
Insight: Street (0.93) should regain the closer's role upon his return with Dale Thayer (5.40) heading back to his old position as the team's setup man.
Description: Jason Marquis could be called upon to start Saturday when San Diego takes on Milwaukee.
Insight: Right now Marquis is pitching for Double-A San Antonio and given how he's performed in the majors this year (2-4, 8.47 ERA in seven starts), that's probably where he belongs. Even if he does get promoted, you're better off leaving Marquis on the waiver wire.
Description: The Padres have called up catching prospect Yasmani Grandal, the No. 63 overall prospect on MLB.com's top 100 list.
Insight: Grandal, the Padres No. 3 prospect, was hitting .317 with four homers in 120 at-bats for Triple-A Tucson this season. With only Nick Hundley (.169/.234/.282) standing in his way, Grandal should get plenty of playing time.
Description: Carlos Quentin blasted two homers Wednesday afternoon against the Cubs, giving him three homers in his first three games back from injury.
Insight: Quentin is red-hot, but don't expect it to last. He's a career .253 hitter who strikes out in 18.4 percent of his at bats.
Description: San Diego outfielder Carlos Quentin went 3-for-4 with a solo homer against the Cubs on Tuesday afternoon.
Insight: Quentin spent the first two months of the season on the disabled list after having knee surgery. He was activated on Monday and is off to a good start in his first two games with the Padres. However, keep in mind he'll play his home games at Petco Park, the worst home run ballpark in the majors this season.
Description: Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin is out for Tuesday afternoon's game against Chicago with a sprained right wrist.
Insight: Though the speedster isn't likely to need a trip to the disabled list, he's probably going to need more bench time. At the moment, Maybin is only contributing to two categories - stolen bases and runs scored. A .216 hitting outfielder with a .607 OPS is not a great fantasy value even with double-digit steals.

Description: Carlos Quentin was activated from the DL Monday in San Diego's 11-7 loss to the Cubs. Quentin spent the first two months of the season recovering from knee surgery.
Insight: He was 1-4 with a double and a walk in his Padres debut. Expect lots of homers but also lots of strikeouts from Quentin.
Description: Carlos Quentin is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday. He's missed the whole season so far while recovering from knee surgery.
Insight: Quentin cracked 24 homers in just 118 games last season and it's not crazy to think he'll do that again in 2012 if he can stay healthy for the remainder of the year.
Description: Cameron Maybin left Saturday's game with a sprained right wrist, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Insight: No word yet on the severity of the injury. Maybin has been a major disappointment at the plate this season, batting .218 with one homer, but his speed will keep his ownership rates up.
Description: Carlos Quentin (knee) went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs in a rehab game at High-A Lake Elsinore on Friday.
Insight: Quentin has had his return date pushed back multiple times due to setbacks with his surgically repaired right knee. He'll be a solid outfielder in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues, but playing in Petco Park will likely cause his power numbers to decline.
Description: Starter Anthony Bass was knocked around by the Mets on Friday. Bass allowed six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Insight: This was Bass' worst outing of the season. The right-hander has been very effective for the Padres this season, striking out 8.5 batters per nine innings with a 3.55 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.
