Todd Frazier, 3BHot7/13/2014 5:23:00 PM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier went 1-for-5 Sunday, but his lone hit was a home run.
Insight: Frazier has a big chance to introduce himself to casual baseball fans during the All-Star break, as he'll participate in the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game. Fantasy owners are already very familiar with him, as he's batted .290 with 19 homers, 53 RBI, 57 runs, 14 steals and an .852 OPS this season.
Jay Bruce, RF7/13/2014 12:14:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce doesn't have a hit in 14 career at-bats against Pirates starter Francisco Liriano.

Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier continues to pound the baseball with a pair of hits and his 18th home run of the season Saturday night.

Billy Hamilton, CF7/11/2014 10:30:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton went 3-for-5 with one RBI Friday against Pittsburgh.

Billy Hamilton, CF7/11/2014 3:55:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton pinch hit Thursday night and has made his way back into the starting lineup for Friday's series opener with Pittsburgh.

Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is 5-for-12 (.417) with one home run against Pittsburgh starter Jeff Locke.
Insight: Frazier carried the Reds offense early on this season and has been playing at an All-Star level, batting .289 with 17 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB and an .842 OPS. Cincinnati will need him to carry them a bit further with all the injuries they have suffered recently (Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Billy Hamilton).
Billy Hamilton, CF7/10/2014 5:09:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton was not in Thursday's starting lineup, but did get into the game as a pinch hitter.
Insight: It's never good when a speed guy injuries a leg, but the fact he was used on as a pinch hitter is a good sign.. Hamilton has been one of the best players in fantasy baseball over the past month.
Brandon Phillips, 2B7/10/2014 4:48:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips diagnosis has been changed to a torn ligament in his left thumb and will miss 8-12 weeks, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: Phillips suffered the injury Wednesday when his glove hand bent while he was diving for a ground ball. He was batting .272 with seven homers, 40 RBI, 33 runs and a .701 OPS.
Homer Bailey, SP7/10/2014 2:33:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Homer Bailey left the game in the sixth inning with a right patella tendon injury.

Jay Bruce, RF7/10/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs.

Devin Mesoraco, CHot7/10/2014 10:10:00 AM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Routine day off after a night game, though with the Reds having so many missing parts its a little bit surprising. The 26-year-old catcher continues amaze batting .306 with 14 doubles, 15 home runs, 43 RBI and a .976 OPS in 196 at-bats. Brayan Pena will get the start, but has no fantasy value.
Brandon Phillips, 2B7/10/2014 10:08:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has been diagnosed with a sprained left thumb and will miss Thursday's game.
Insight: Phillips suffered the injury Wednesday when his glove hand bent while he was diving for a ground ball. His X-rays came back negative so he doesn't have a fracture, but he may have an MRI to check if he has any structural damage. He could easily sit until after the All-Star game.
Billy Hamilton, CF7/10/2014 10:06:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton left Wednesday's game with tightness in his left hamstring and is not in Thursday's starting lineup.
Insight: It's never good when a speed guy injuries a leg, but hopefully he'll only miss a couple of days. Hamilton has been one of the best players in fantasy baseball over the past month. The Reds keep losing key players. Joey Votto went on the DL this week and Brandon Phillips left Wednesday's game as well with a sprained left thumb.

Description: Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon will end the first half with a 12-3 record, 2.70 ERA and 1.05 WHIP.

Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has been diagnosed with a sprained left thumb, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Phillips suffered the injury Wednesday when his glove hand bent while he was diving for a ground ball. His X-rays came back negative so he doesn't have a fracture, but he may have an MRI to check if he has any structural damage.
Billy Hamilton, CFHot7/9/2014 10:00:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton left Wednesday's game with tightness in his left hamstring, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: The Reds keep losing key players. Joey Votto went on the DL this week and Brandon Phillips left Wednesday's game as well with a sprained left thumb. Hamilton has been one of the best players in fantasy baseball over the past month. His main weapon is his speed, so a hamstring injury could be troublesome.
Brandon Phillips, 2B7/9/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips exited Wednesday's game after appearing to hurt his left wrist, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Phillips' glove hand bent while he was diving for a ground ball. Joey Votto was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, so the Reds can't afford losing Phillips.
Billy Hamilton, CFHot7/8/2014 7:46:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton went 2-for-4 with a double and two steals Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: Hamilton has batted .330 with 11 doubles, a triple, three homers, 21 RBI, 17 runs and 14 steals over his last 27 games.
Jay Bruce, RFHot7/8/2014 7:38:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce homered for the third straight game Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: Bruce has gone 4-for-12 with three homers, seven RBI and five runs in his last three games after going 0-for-21 from June 29 to July 5. This is nothing new for Bruce, who may be the streakiest hitter in the league.
Joey Votto, 1B7/8/2014 12:07:00 PM
Description: The Reds Joey Votto has been placed on the disabled list due to a quad injury.
Insight: Votto (.255, 6 HR, 23 RBI, .799 OPS) had zero homers since he returned from the same injury on June 10 after spending nearly a month on the disabled list and he clearly needs more time off. He'll get it. Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier and Brayan Pena will all likely see time at 1B.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot7/8/2014 10:02:00 AM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is 6-for-17 (.353) with two home runs against Cubs starter Travis Wood.
Insight: Frazier carried the Reds offense early on this season and has been playing at an All-Star level, batting .293 with 17 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB and an .859 OPS. He has four multi-hit games in the last five contests.
Jay Bruce, RF 7/7/2014 11:04:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce homered for the second straight game Monday against the Cubs.
Insight: Bruce started at first base with Joey Votto sidelined. He's one of the streakiest hitters in the league and could be streaking in the right direction now after going 0-for-21 from June 29 to July 5.
Billy Hamilton, CF7/7/2014 11:02:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton drove in four runs Monday against the Cubs.
Insight: Hamilton had one RBI on a single in the fifth inning and cleared the bases with a triple in the eighth. The 23-year-old has proven there's more to his game than just speed since the start of June.
Joey Votto, 1BCold7/7/2014 6:19:00 PM
Description: The Reds are waiting for test results on Joey Votto's quad before they place him on the disabled list, according to Mark Sheldon of mlb.com.
Insight: Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported Sunday that Votto (.255, 6 HR, 23 RBI, .799 OPS) was going to go on the DL with a strained left quad and he likely still will. He's batted just .250 with zero homers since he returned from the same injury on June 10 after spending nearly a month on the disabled list and he clearly needs more time off.
Jay Bruce, RFCold7/7/2014 3:51:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce will start at first base Monday night.
Insight: With Votto sidelined, Bruce could gain 1B eligibility. Bruce has got to be the streakiest hitter in the big leagues. When he's hot you have to start him every day, but when he's cold it doesn't matter whether its a good matchup or bad. Bruce has one hit in his last 18 at-bats.
Joey Votto, 1BCold7/6/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto (knee/quad) will be placed on the DL, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: Votto (.255, 6 HR, 23 RBI, .799 OPS) hasn't homered since May and might as well get sit out and get healthy because he's not doing fantasy owners any good limping around at 60 percent.
Aroldis Chapman, RP7/6/2014 4:46:00 PM
Description: Reds closer Aroldis Chapman did not close on Sunday, that job went to Jonathan Broxton.
Insight: Chapman is dealing with a sore hamstring, according to manager Bryan Price. It doesn't appear to be serious and he should be back for their next game on Tuesday.
Jay Bruce, RF7/6/2014 4:21:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce ended a six-game hitless streak with a home run in the eighth inning.
Insight: Bruce has got to be the streakiest hitter in the big leagues. When he's hot you have to start him every day, but when he's cold it doesn't matter whether its a good matchup or bad.
Jay Bruce, RF7/6/2014 10:56:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is 15-for-44 with two home runs and nine RBI against Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Bruce, like Brandon Phillips, has great numbers against Gallardo and has been struggling of late, so perhaps he's due for a big afternoon. Three of his 15 hits against the Milwaukee righty have been doubles and he's also walked four times and stolen two bases against him.
Brandon Phillips, 2B7/6/2014 10:49:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips owns a robust .351 lifetime average against Milwaukee right-hander Yovani Gallardo with two home runs and eight RBI in 57 at-bats.
Insight: Holy sample size, Batman. Phillips, naturally, has seen Gallardo quite a bit, notching 20 hits off of him with two doubles and three homers. The Reds' longtime second baseman has been cold of late (.206/.263/..382 in his last 10), so maybe facing Gallardo will jumpstart his bat.
Joey Votto, 1BCold7/6/2014 10:41:00 AM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto (knee/quad) will sit out Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Insight: Votto (.255, 6 HR, 23 RBI, .799 OPS) hasn't homered since May and can probably use some time off. At this time he isn't fantasy worthy.
Ryan Ludwick, LF7/6/2014 10:38:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati outfielder Ryan Ludwick is in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Yovani Gallardo and the Brewers.
Insight: Ludwick hasn't played much of late, but has a favorable matchup against Gallardo. He's a career .375 hitter (12-for-32) with three home runs in their matchups.
Devin Mesoraco, CHot7/5/2014 1:20:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is in Saturday afternoon's starting lineup, not sitting this one out as previously announced.
Insight: The 26-year-old catcher continues amaze batting .313 with 13 doubles, 15 home runs, 41 RBI and a 1.020 OPS in 176 at-bats. Brayan Pena will get the start, but has no fantasy value.
Jay Bruce, RFCold7/5/2014 11:00:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is 8-for-19 (.421) with two homers against Milwaukee starter Matt Garza.
Insight: Bruce's recent hot streak is a thing of the past as he's hitless over the past five games. At times like this his hot/cold streak usually outweighs the matchup. Look elsewhere for outfield help.
Billy Hamilton, CF7/4/2014 10:28:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Friday against the Brewers.
Insight: Hamilton has surprisingly hit five home runs to go with his 35 steals and 41 runs. He's been one of the most valuable hitters in fantasy since the start of June.
Alfredo Simon, SPHot7/4/2014 10:23:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon tied Adam Wainwright and Zack Greinke for the NL lead with 11 wins after beating the Brewers Friday.
Insight: Simon (2.78 ERA) threw 7 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits. The 33-year-old is a strong regression candidate because he's posted a 4.35 FIP and a .233 BABIP.
Todd Frazier, 3B7/4/2014 11:42:00 AM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is just 1-for-12 against Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse.
Insight: Frazier has been very good this season, batting .289 with 17 HR, 47 RBI, 13 SB and an .859 OPS. This unfavorable matchup, however, should be avoided.
Joey Votto, 1BCold7/4/2014 10:31:00 AM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto (knee/quad) limped his way through the recent road trip and is a shell of the player fantasy owners are used to seeing.
Insight: Votto has batted .263 with zero homers, 10 RBI and a .729 OPS in 21 games since he returned from the disabled list. At this point he's providing no power and can't be installed in lineups. Another trip to the DL could be in his near future.
Joey Votto, 1BCold7/2/2014 3:00:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is getting a day off Wednesday, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Votto has batted .267 with zero homers, 10 RBI and a .738 OPS in 20 games since he returned from a left quad strain.
Homer Bailey, SP6/29/2014 6:49:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Homer Bailey fired his fourth career shutout Sunday at San Francisco.
Insight: Bailey's last two shutouts were no-hitters. He gave up just three hits and struck out seven Sunday. After going 1-2 with a 6.15 ERA over his first five starts, Bailey has gone 7-2 with a 3.79 ERA in his last 12.
Devin Mesoraco, CHot6/29/2014 1:56:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is not in Sunday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Simply a routine day off for Mesoraco. The 26-year-old catcher continues his stunning season batting .307 with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 40 RBI and a .999 OPS in 166 at-bats.
Jay Bruce, RFHot6/29/2014 11:09:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is in one of his typical hot streaks and has a favorable matchup on Sunday making him a must-start candidate.
Insight: Bruce is 3-for-7 with a home run against Tim Hudson, but more importantly is hitting .440 over his last six games and batting .323 over the past four weeks. Never abandon Bruce while he's hitting like this.
Jay Bruce, RFHot6/28/2014 10:53:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is in one of his typical hot streaks and has a favorable matchup on Saturday making him a must-start candidate.
Insight: Bruce is 6-for-13 against the struggling Matt Cain, hitting .440 over his last six games and batting .315 over the past four weeks.
Jay Bruce, RFHot6/27/2014 10:40:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is in one of his typical hot streaks and at this time you should ignore the bad matchup and play him anyway.
Insight: Bruce is just 1-for-12 against Madison Bumgarner, but he's also hitting .417 this week, on a seven-game extra-base hitting streak and batting .307 over the past four weeks.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/26/2014 5:52:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is back in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants. SOURCE: MLBlogs.com
Insight: He missed last night's game with a bruised heel. Phillips' numbers aren't as good as last year (5 HR, 33 RBI in 285 at bats) but because second base is a shallow position in fantasy, he still has plenty of value.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/26/2014 10:09:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips was scratched Wednesday against the Cubs and is questionable for Thursday's game against San Francisco.
Insight: His bruised heel hasn't fully healed yet. Phillips (.274, 5 HR, 33 RBI) would be a nice option if he's in the lineup as he's 8-for-16 in his career against Ryan Vogelsong.
Mat Latos, SP6/25/2014 10:47:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mat Latos was dominant in Wednesday's victory over the Cubs.
Insight: He held Chicago to one run in seven innings. Latos has looked sharp since his return from the DL, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three appearances.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/25/2014 6:16:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips was scratched Wednesday against the Cubs. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: His bruised heel hasn't fully healed yet. Phillips (.274, 5 HR, 33 RBI) could be available to pinch-hit later in the game. Skip Schumaker (.223, 1 HR, 11 RBI) is starting at second base.
Joey Votto, 1B6/25/2014 11:20:00 AM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is a career .381 hitter with two homers and three doubles against Cubs starter Edwin Jackson.
Insight: Votto's season has been a disappointment so far and his home-road splits are concerning. Despite his success against Jackson, he's hit all six of his home runs at Great American Ballpark and is batting .326 there as opposed to .204 on the road. If this game wasn't at Wrigley, he'd be a much stronger play.
Devin Mesoraco, CHot6/24/2014 9:39:00 AM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco reached base five times and hit a ninth-inning grand slam off Hector Rondon Monday at Chicago.
Insight: Mesoraco also walked twice and was hit by two pitches. The 26-year-old catcher has homered in each of his last four games and is hitting .315 with 10 doubles, 13 home runs, 38 RBI and a 1.035 OPS in 146 at-bats. For some reason, he's still available in 28 percent of Yahoo leagues.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/23/2014 8:23:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips didn't start Monday against the Cubs.
Insight: Phillips suffered a bruised heel on a backswing and left Sunday's game. He's day-to-day. Skip Schumaker started Monday.
Devin Mesoraco, C6/23/2014 10:22:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco is a career .545 hitter (6-for-11) with a home run against Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija.
Insight: Mesoraco's "career year" continues - he's batting .310 with a career-high 12 homers and a .992 OPS. He had another hot week with three homers in his last four games.
Alfredo Simon, SPHot6/23/2014 9:15:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon held the Cubs to one run on five hits and struck out five in seven innings Monday, though he took a no decision and remained 10-3.
Insight: Simon continues to defy his fielding-independent numbers (4.41 FIP) and now has a 2.92 ERA. He's been incredibly lucky to this point, getting a .240 BABIP despite a 20.2 percent line-drive rate and a 9.5 percent infield fly-ball rate, neither of which are extraordinary. He should fade in the second half.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot6/22/2014 5:21:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto picked up his seventh win of the season Sunday against the Blue Jays and lowered his MLB-leading ERA in the process.
Insight: Cueto scattered seven hits and gave up three runs (one earned) while striking out eight batters over eight innings. He has a 1.86 ERA, a 0.84 WHIP and a 119/27 K/BB in 116 innings.

Brandon Phillips, 2B6/22/2014 4:18:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips suffered a bruised heel Sunday against Toronto. SOURCE: Mark Sheldon, MLB.com
Insight: Phillips went 0-for-2 before leaving in the fifth inning. It's unknown if Phillips (.274, 5 HR, 33 RBI) will be ready to play tomorrow against the Cubs.
Billy Hamilton, CF6/22/2014 10:11:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton will get the day off Sunday against Toronto. SOURCE: Reds on Twitter
Insight: Hamilton (.273, 4 HR, 23 RBI) will have to wait until Monday to extend his eight-game hitting streak. Eleven of Hamilton's 31 steals this season have come in the last month.
Mike Leake, SP6/21/2014 7:41:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mike Leake was dealing Saturday against Toronto.
Insight: Leake (5-6, 3.59 ERA) limited the Jays to four hits and one run in eight innings of work. He'll go for his third win in a row Thursday against the Giants.
Zack Cozart, SS6/21/2014 1:24:00 PM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Cozart has done nothing this season, batting .237 with two homers and 17 RBI. He hit 15 homers in his first full season back in 2012 and a dozen last season, but at this pace won't get close to doubler digits. Ramon Santiago will get the start, but has no fantasy value.
Jay Bruce, RF6/21/2014 10:24:00 AM
Description: Always streaky Reds outfielder Jay Bruce has been stuck in a bad rut through the first part of the season and isn't likely to come out of it against left-hander J.A. Happ.
Insight: Bruce (.218, 6 HR, 24 RBI) did homer on Friday night, but is just 1-for-9 with five strikeouts against the Blue Jays left-hander.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/21/2014 10:20:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips is a career .500 hitter (6-for-12) with three homers, six RBI and a 1.867 OPS versus Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ.
Insight: Phillips (.275, 5 HR, 32 RBI) has been solid the past two weeks, batting over .300 with 10 RBI and should continue in this favorable matchup. He's unlikely to reach last year's triple-digit RBI total, but that's primarily due to no longer being the everyday cleanup hitter.
Ryan Ludwick, LF6/20/2014 2:06:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati left fielder Ryan Ludwick didn't play Thursday and isn't in Friday's starting lineup against Toronto.
Insight: Ludwick has been dealing with "back tightness." He was 5-for-8 in the recent two game series with Milwaukee and had gone 2-for-4 before the injury against Pittsburgh. He picked a bad time to come up lame, just as his bat was heating up.
Billy Hamilton, CFHot6/19/2014 5:35:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton has gone 12-for-24 (.500) with four doubles, two homers, six RBI and six steals in his last five games.

Insight: Hamilton is scorching hot right now. Since the start of the month, he's hitting .340 with three homers, eight RBI and eight steals. It took him a little while to get going but Hamilton (.272, 4 HR, 18 RBI) is finally living up to his massive hype.
Devin Mesoraco, C6/17/2014 2:19:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco is not in Tuesday's starting lineup, Brayan Pena will be behind the plate.
Insight: A .241 lifetime hitter, Mesoraco is having a "career year" batting .305 with a career-high nine homers and a .920 OPS. He's come back to earth in June, batting .184 through 10 games.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot6/15/2014 6:45:00 PM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier plated four runs Sunday in a win over the Brewers.
Insight: The power surge continues for Frazier, who now has six jacks in only 53 June at bats. At this rate, Frazier (.273, 15 HR, 39 RBI) could have a new career-high in homers by the All-Star break.
Devin Mesoraco, C6/15/2014 5:47:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco delivered three hits Sunday in a win against Milwaukee.
Insight: A .241 lifetime hitter, Mesoraco has been almost unstoppable in 2014 with nine homers and 28 RBI in 37 games. Unfortunately, he's been a risky fantasy proposition because he splits time at catcher with Brayan Pena (.262, 3 HR, 13 RBI).
Ryan Ludwick, LF6/15/2014 5:40:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati left fielder Ryan Ludwick exploded for four hits Sunday in a win against Milwaukee.

Billy Hamilton, CF6/15/2014 5:34:00 PM
Description: Sunday was a day of highs and lows for Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton. The center fielder crushed three hits including his fourth home run of the season but he also struck out three times.
Insight: The hits keep on coming for Hamilton, who is now batting .306 in 49 at bats this month. With 25 steals already this season, Hamilton (.264, 4 HR, 18 RBI) should be owned in all fantasy leagues.
Jay Bruce, RF6/15/2014 11:24:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Jay Bruce has been a massive disappointment this season, but he has a great matchup Sunday against Brewers starter Marco Estrada.
Insight: Bruce (.215, 5 HR, 21 RBI) is a career .368 hitter with a double and four home runs in 19 at-bats against Estrada, who has allowed a whopping 20 home runs in 79 innings this season.
Mat Latos, SP6/14/2014 10:15:00 PM

Description: Reds left fielder Ryan Ludwick is 11-for-29 with three homers and a 1.210 OPS versus Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Ludwick hasn't done much this season and is no longer a full-time starter, but he should certainly get a chance with this favorable matchup. he's batting .253 with five homers and 20 RBI in 162 at-bats this season.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/13/2014 7:14:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips is ready to go Friday against Milwaukee. He left Thursday's game after hurting his finger. SOURCE: Andrew Gruman, Fox Sports Wisconsin

Jay Bruce, RF6/13/2014 11:52:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Jay Bruce is a career 6-for-16 (.375) with a pair of homers against Milwaukee starter Matt Garza.
Insight: Bruce is starting to get his bat going. He has gone 10-for-42 with three doubles, two homers and seven RBI in his last 11 games. This matchup may add to those totals.

Insight: Simon (8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 5 K's, 0 BB) has had a remarkable season, limiting opponents to just a .233 average in 82 1/3 innings. Prior to this season, Simon's career-high in wins was only six.
Brandon Phillips, 2B6/12/2014 8:09:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips had to leave Thursday's game against the Dodgers because of a sore finger. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: Phillips (.270, 4 HR, 23 RBI) went 0-for-3 before exiting. The injury doesn't sound too serious and we wouldn't expect him to miss much time.
Billy Hamilton, CF6/12/2014 11:44:00 AM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Hamilton's numbers at the plate aren't great (.252, 2 HR, 14 RBI, .634 OPS), but he has 24 steals and 27 runs.
Joey Votto, 1B6/12/2014 11:14:00 AM

Johnny Cueto, SPHot6/11/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto was at it again Wednesday against the Dodgers.
Insight: Los Angeles managed just three hits in Cueto's six innings of work. If the season ended today, Cueto would be the easy choice for the National League Cy Young Award. He leads the NL in both strikeouts (109) and ERA (1.85) and is second in quality starts (11).

Skip Schumaker, OF6/10/2014 3:29:00 PM

Insight: Ryan Ludwick will take a seat on the bench. Schumaker has faced Beckett two times and owns a pair of hits.

Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto (quad) has been activated from the disabled list and will bat third Tuesday versus the Dodgers.

Description: Reds left fielder Ryan Ludwick is 5-for-9 with two homers and a 1.778 OPS versus Dodgers right-hander Dan Haren.

Description: Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos (elbow) will rejoin the rotation later this week if he doesn't have any issues during Monday's rehab start, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Latos' last rehab start was supposed to be his final one before returning to the rotation, but he left with a calf cramp. The right-hander has missed the entire season due to a flexor mass strain in his elbow. He's expected to replace Tony Cingrani, not Alfredo Simon, in the rotation.

Devin Mesoraco, C6/6/2014 2:08:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is not in Friday night's starting lineup.
Insight: Mesoraco has been a fantasy stud since coming off the disabled list. He's batting .324 with nine homers, 27 RBI and a 1.016 OPS in 30 games. It appears to be a routine day off.
Mat Latos, SP6/6/2014 10:42:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos (elbow) left his third and what was expected to be his final rehab start due to a leg cramp.
Insight: Latos was expected to throw 90-100 pitches and then rejoin the Reds rotation. He may make one more rehab start because of the cramping issue, but a final decision hasn't been announced. In 2013 Latos went 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.21 WHIP - certainly fantasy worthy numbers.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot6/5/2014 4:12:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier hit his third homer in four games to raise his total to 12 in 57 games.

Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has had great success (7-for-14) against San Francisco right-hander Ryan Vogelsong in his career.
Insight: Phillips (.269, 4 HR, 22 RBI) has been his regular ol' self this season, batting close to his lifetime average of .271 and he's well on-pace to record his fifth career season of 30 doubles or more. Six of his seven hits against Vogelsong have been singles, but that shouldn't dissuade you from starting him in all formats.

Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco's lone hit left the park on Tuesday.
Insight: Mesoraco has nine homers this season. He has gone 8-for-47 (.170) in his last 13 games but hit five homers in that span and is still batting .347 with a 1.084 OPS and 27 RBI on the year.

Johnny Cueto, SPHot6/1/2014 9:24:00 AM
Description: Reds starter Johnny Cueto tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out seven batters Saturday night.

Insight: Mesoraco sent Zack Greinke packing in the top of the eighth with his two-out jack. The catcher was just 2-for-25 (.080) in his previous seven games, which wasn't surprising because he hit .500 in his first 54 at-bats.
Zack Cozart, SS5/25/2014 12:16:00 PM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart hasn't had much luck against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright in his career.

Description: Reds outfielder Jay Bruce (knee) has been activated from the disabled list, though he isn't in Wednesday's lineup.
Insight: Bruce had surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee just over two weeks ago. He was expected to miss 3-4 weeks but needed the minimum amount of time on the DL. The Reds need him back with Joey Votto (quad) going on the disabled list Wednesday.

Insight: Mesoraco went 0-for-6 with a walk Monday but he has batted .450 with four homers, eight doubles, 17 RBI and a 1.283 OPS. He's also made two trips to the disabled list already, which is why he only has 60 at-bats. The former first-round pick should be owned in all leagues.

Insight: That's good news as the team was worried about his surgically-repaired left knee. He's batting .257 with six homers and 12 RBI. Still a very patient hitter, fantasy owners would like to see him get more aggressive and take less walks.
Devin Mesoraco, C5/18/2014 6:08:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco went ballistic Sunday versus the Phillies.
Insight: Mesoraco went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of singles. Somehow, he's hitting .500 for the season with 17 RBI in just 54 at bats. Mesoraco has been splitting time behind the plate with Brayan Pena and Toby Barnhart but that may not last if he keeps hitting like this.
Brandon Phillips, 2B5/18/2014 9:56:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati 2B Brandon Phillips has been very successful in his career against Phillies starter Cliff Lee.
Insight: Phillips has gone 10-for-31 (.323) with five doubles and a homer against Lee and has hit .347 with eight doubles and two home runs in May. He should be one of the players you consider for second base on Sunday.
Homer Bailey, SP5/17/2014 9:57:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Homer Bailey was lit up by the Phillies on Saturday night.
Insight: Bailey gave up six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He had gone 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in his first three starts of May, but his ERA and WHIP are back up to 5.44 and 1.58. Bailey's issues have been partially caused by a .348 BABIP, but he has no one to blame but himself for a 3.16 BB/9 and a 1.58 HR/9.

Description: Reds right-hander Alfredo Simon fired 7 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out eight batters in a win over the Phillies on Friday night.
Insight: Simon didn't strike out a batter in his previous two starts and has just 30 Ks in 51 1/3 innings this season, but his ERA and WHIP are now 2.45 and 1.03, respectively.
Devin Mesoraco, C5/16/2014 5:23:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco (left hamstring) is batting fifth Friday against the Phillies.
Insight: Mesoraco missed nearly three weeks with a hamstring strain. The former first-round pick batted .468 with six doubles, three homers, 13 RBI and a 1.296 OPS in his first 13 games this season and may finally be realizing his potential.
Joey Votto, 1B5/16/2014 5:20:00 PM
Description: According to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Reds first baseman Joey Votto's MRI revealed no structural damage in his knee.
Insight: Votto has a left quad strain and won't be placed on the disabled list yet. It's relatively good news because it initially appeared that the first baseman hurt his left knee, which was surgically repaired in 2012.
Joey Votto, 1B5/16/2014 12:05:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto did not travel to Philadelphia with the rest of the team and could be headed for the disabled list, according to Ken Rosenthal.
Insight: Votto's batting average is down about 50 points from last season and he is once again a very patient hitter, leading the league with 33 walks, but his left knee has apparently been acting up and we await the results of an MRI.
Joey Votto, 1B5/16/2014 9:54:00 AM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is 6-for-15 (.400) with three extra-base hits against Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick.
Insight: Votto's batting average is down about 50 points from last season and he is once again a very patient hitter, leading the league with 33 walks, but he's still a viable fantasy option. Beware of bad weather along the east coast which could make this selection a bit of a gamble.
Zack Cozart, SS5/15/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati shortstop Zack Cozart pounded three hits in Thursday's win over the Padres.
Insight: Cozart plated two runs in the victory. That snaps a streak of 16 consecutive games without a run batted in. Cozart (.208, 1 HR, 11 RBI) will have a good game now and then but he isn't consistent enough to be on the fantasy radar.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot5/15/2014 7:25:00 PM
Description: Reds ace Johnny Cueto continued to pitch like a Cy Young contender Thursday against the Padres (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K's).
Insight: Thursday was Cueto's fourth career shutout. He hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his nine starts this season. Cueto (4-2, 1.25 ERA) will be on the mound next Tuesday against the Nats.
Tony Cingrani, SP5/14/2014 9:04:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati left-hander Tony Cingrani will likely start Sunday or Monday, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Cingrani was hoping to start Saturday, but the Reds had a rainout Wednesday and will presumably push everyone back. The 24-year-old left-hander has been out since May 1 due to shoulder tendinitis.
Brandon Phillips, 2B5/14/2014 11:41:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati 2B Brandon Phillips is hitting .077 in his career against San Diego right-hander Ian Kennedy.
Insight: Phillips (.285, 2 HR, 9 RBI) had three hits in last night's series opener but we don't imagine he'll enjoy much success Wednesday with Kennedy (2-4, 3.12 ERA) throwing for the Padres.
Tony Cingrani, SP5/14/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati left-hander Tony Cingrani expects to be activated from the 15-day DL Saturday against the Phillies. SOURCE: Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: He's missed the past couple weeks with shoulder tendinitis. Cingrani had been 2-2 with a 3.34 ERA before the injury.
Mike Leake, SP5/13/2014 9:51:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Mike Leake allowed just two hits and one run in eight innings Tuesday against the Padres.
Insight: Leake took a no decision and remained 2-3 on the season despite a 3.09 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP.
Brandon Phillips, 2B5/13/2014 9:47:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI Tuesday against San Diego.
Insight: Phillips (.285) has just nine RBI in 36 games this season; he drove in 21 runs in his first 18 games of 2013. He's also not running much for the second straight season. If you can get someone to buy him for his 20-20 production of 2009 or even his 18-103-5 numbers last year, go for it.
Mat Latos, SP5/13/2014 7:50:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos (elbow) threw his first bullpen session on Sunday since he suffered a right flexor mass strain in April and he'll throw another one on Wednesday, according to mlb.com's Mark Sheldon.
Insight: Latos will throw a third bullpen session following Wednesday's and then he'll progress to a simulated game and eventually a rehab assignment. If all goes well, he could be back by the end of May or the first week of June.
Devin Mesoraco, C5/13/2014 4:38:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco (left hamstring) will begin a short rehab assignment Tuesday in Louisville.
Insight: Mesoraco has batted .468 with six doubles, three homers, 13 RBI and a 1.296 OPS in 13 games this season and hopes to be back in the lineup in a couple of days.
Homer Bailey, SP5/11/2014 6:20:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Homer Bailey improved to 3-2 Sunday with a win over Colorado.
Insight: He limited the Rockies to just four hits and one run over 7 1/3 innings. After getting off to a slow start, Bailey has won three of his last five outings with an impressive 3.24 ERA over that span.
Aroldis Chapman, RP5/11/2014 4:16:00 PM
Description: Reds closer Aroldis Chapman made his 2014 season debut on Sunday and looked as solid as ever.
Insight: Chapman underwent surgery after taking a line drive off his face in spring training. He walked the first hitter (Troy Tulowitzki), then struck out the heart of the Rockies order - Carlos Gonzalez, Nolan Arenado and Justin Morneau.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot5/11/2014 4:12:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier slammed his seventh homer of the season Sunday against Colorado.
Insight: Frazier has now hit safely in 11 consecutive games to raise his average to .266 with 21 RBI and 21 runs. He was batting just .210 on April 19, but is hitting .323 since.
Brandon Phillips, 2B5/11/2014 9:29:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has gone 3-for-3 (.158) with a double, triple and home run against Colorado right-hander Juan Nicasio.
Insight: Ok, the sample size is tiny, but he's obviously seeing the ball well. Phillips is batting .279 this season, but his .695 OPS is the worst since he became a full-time starter.
Alfredo Simon, SP5/10/2014 10:36:00 PM
Description: Reds right-hander Alfredo Simon allowed five runs on eight hits (3 HR) in three innings Saturday against Colorado.
Insight: Simon was going to carry a 1.99 ERA all season. He's 32 years old, has a career ERA of 3.97 and a K/BB of 22/12 in 43 2/3 innings this season. The right-hander has given up five homers in his last 10 innings.
Devin Mesoraco, C5/10/2014 6:09:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco (left hamstring) expects to go on a one- or two-game rehab assignment, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Mesoraco did simulated baserunning on Saturday and said he felt great. The 25-year-old former first-round pick has batted .468 with six doubles, three homers, 13 RBI and a 1.296 OPS in 13 games this season and should be owned in most leagues.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/10/2014 2:28:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton (fingers) is not in the lineup Saturday.
Insight: Hamilton sprained two knuckles on his left hand on a diving catch last Thursday against the Brewers. He has no structural damage and won't further damage his injury by playing with it but needs to get to a point where he can tolerate the pain. So far, he's only pinch hit.
Joey Votto, 1B5/10/2014 1:26:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is a career .667 (6-for-9) versus Rockies hurler Jordan Lyles.
Insight: He's batting .409 with five homers, but just 11 RBI. Perhaps this is a result of losing Shin-Soo Choo at the top of the lineup. Votto is once again a very patient hitter, leading the league with 28 walks.
Zack Cozart, SS5/10/2014 1:23:00 PM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart is 5-for-7 (.714) against Colorado starter Jordan Lyles.
Insight: Cozart's bat has been silent all season (.195, 1 HR, 9 RBI), so despite this favorable matchup we recommend looking elsewhere. He's been a double-digit home run producer the past two seasons, but his OPS has headed in the wrong direction in each succeeding season.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot5/9/2014 10:00:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto remained 3-2 despite allowing two runs on five hits in eight innings Friday against Colorado.
Insight: Cueto has a 1.43 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP this season, but he's received very little run support. The right-hander is obviously due for some regression -- he has a .160 BABIP and a 99.5 LOB% -- but he's still an excellent starter who has a 9.71 K/9 and a 2.29 BB/9.
Todd Frazier, 3B5/9/2014 9:58:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier launched his sixth homer of the season Friday against Colorado.
Insight: Frazier has trimmed his strikeout rate for the second straight season and is down to 16.9 percent after Friday's game. He's hitting .267 with 20 RBI and 20 runs.
Joey Votto, 1B5/9/2014 9:53:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto went 1-for-4 with a walk-off solo homer Friday against Colorado.
Insight: Votto is batting just .262 this season and has 11 RBI in 122 at-bats. He has gone 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position while walking 11 times in those situations. Votto often has been content to take a walk with men on base rather than expanding the zone and has driven in just 84 runs in his last 880 plate appearances.
Devin Mesoraco, C5/9/2014 5:51:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco (left hamstring) could be back Sunday when he's first eligible, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Mesoraco ran sprints Friday and said his hamstring "felt normal." The 25-year-old former first-round pick has batted .468 with six doubles, three homers, 13 RBI and a 1.296 OPS in 13 games this season.
Aroldis Chapman, RP5/9/2014 5:43:00 PM
Description: According to Mark Sheldon of mlb.com, Reds closer Aroldis Chapman (head) is expected to be activated Saturday.
Insight: Chapman underwent surgery after taking a line drive off his face in spring training and has made good progress. He's ready to be activated Friday, but manager Bryan Price wants to see him play catch first.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/9/2014 5:41:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton (fingers) is not in the lineup Friday, but he said his hand is feeling much better, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Hamilton sprained two knuckles on his left hand on a diving catch last Thursday against the Brewers and has been unable to grip a bat. He has no structural damage and won't further damage his injury by playing with it but needs to get to a point where he can tolerate the pain.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/7/2014 2:48:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton (fingers) isn't in the lineup Wednesday at Boston.
Insight: Hamilton sprained two knuckles on his left hand on a diving catch last Thursday against the Brewers and is still unable to grip a bat. Hamilton has no structural damage and won't further damage his injury by playing with it but needs to get to a point where he can tolerate the pain. GM Walt Jocketty said the team has no plans to place him on the DL at this time, but those plans could change if Hamilton still cannot handle the bat in a day or two.
Brayan Pena, CHot5/7/2014 2:46:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Brayan Pena (hamstring) will start Wednesday's game at Boston.
Insight: Pena missed Tuesday's game with a hamstring issue. He's homered in three of his last five games and is hitting .328 this season. The 32-year-old will continue to start behind the plate while Devin Mesoraco recovers from a strained hamstring.
Brandon Phillips, 2B5/7/2014 10:12:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has gone 3-for-19 (.158) with four strikeouts against Boston's Jake Peavy.
Insight: Phillips has collected multiple hits in three straight games while going 7-for-13 with three doubles, a home run and five runs in that span, but he hasn't performed well against Peavy.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/6/2014 8:44:00 PM
Description: According to Mark Sheldon of mlb.com, Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton said Tuesday that he was unable to hold onto the bat when he tried to swing.
Insight: Hamilton didn't start for the fourth straight game on Tuesday due to sprained knuckles on his left hand. He suffered the injury on a diving catch Thursday against the Brewers. Hamilton has no structural damage and won't further damage his injury by playing with it but needs to get to a point where he can tolerate the pain. GM Walt Jocketty said the team has no plans to place him on the DL at this time, but those plans could change if Hamilton still cannot grip the bat in a day or two.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/6/2014 5:08:00 PM
Description: Reds GM Walt Jocketty doesn't expect Billy Hamilton (fingers) to need a trip to the disabled list, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Tuesday will be Hamilton's fourth straight game out of the lineup due to sprained knuckles on his left hand. He pinch ran on May 1 and 4 but felt pain when he tried to swing a bat on Tuesday. He has no structural damage and won't further damage his injury by playing with it but needs to get to a point where he can tolerate the pain.
Aroldis Chapman, RP5/6/2014 4:51:00 PM
Description: According to Jon Morosi of foxsports.com, Reds closer Aroldis Chapman (head) could return to the active roster as early as this weekend.
Insight: Chapman underwent surgery after taking a line drive off his face in spring training and has made good progress.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/6/2014 1:44:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton isn't in Tuesday's lineup.
Insight: Tuesday will be his fourth straight game out of the lineup due to sprained knuckles on his left hand. He pinch ran on May 1 and 4 but isn't ready to wield a bat yet.
Chris Heisey, LF5/4/2014 10:06:00 PM
Description: Reds outfielder Chris Heisey will take over the starting right-field job while Jay Bruce (torn meniscus) is on the DL.
Insight: Bruce is expected to miss 3-4 weeks but could be out longer. Heisey has good power but fantasy owners don't need to get overly excited about him.
Jay Bruce, RF5/4/2014 9:57:00 PM
Description: According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, Reds right fielder Jay Bruce will undergo surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee.
Insight: Bruce was scratched from Sunday's lineup with what was initially called soreness. He's expected to miss 3-4 weeks, but it could be longer. Teammate Joey Votto had surgery for the same injury in 2012 and was given the same timetable, but he ended up missing nearly seven weeks.
Jay Bruce, RF5/4/2014 9:52:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce may need surgery on his left knee, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Bruce was scratched from Sunday's lineup with soreness in his left knee. The outfielder has hit just .218 with three homers, 14 RBI and a .721 OPS this year, but he averaged 32 homers, 102 RBI and 87 runs the last three seasons.
Jay Bruce, RF5/4/2014 2:32:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce has been scratched from Sunday's starting lineup. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: He's dealing with soreness in his left knee. Chris Heisey (.255, 1 HR, 6 RBI) is filling in at right field. Fantasy owners should consider Bruce day-to-day.
Ryan Ludwick, LF5/4/2014 1:53:00 PM
Description: Fantasy owners may want to stay away from Reds left fielder Ryan Ludwick on Sunday.
Insight: Ludwick is just a .143 career hitter against Brewers right-hander Kyle Lohse. He's had a good series (3-for-7, three RBI) so fantasy owners shouldn't get too down on Ludwick if he struggles a bit on Sunday.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/4/2014 12:52:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton won't compete Sunday against the Brewers.
Insight: He's now missed three straight games with sprained knuckles. Skip Schumaker (.000, 0 HR, 0 RBI) will hit leadoff and start in center field Sunday in the series finale.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot5/3/2014 11:05:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto yielded a pair of home runs, but turned in another good performance in earning his third win of the season.
Insight: Cueto has given up two runs or less in all seven starts this season and owns a 1.31 ERA. He's also struck out 10-plus batters in three of his last four starts. He's a must start until further notice.
Brandon Phillips, 2B5/2/2014 5:09:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is getting the night off Friday against Milwaukee. SOURCE: Reds on Twitter
Insight: This will be his first absence of the season. Ramon Santiago (.143, 0 HR, 1 RBI) is filling in at second base.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/2/2014 5:04:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton won't be in the lineup Friday against Milwaukee. SOURCE: Jamie Ramsey, MLB.com
Insight: Hamilton bruised two of his knuckles in last night's series opener. With Hamilton out, Roger Bernadina (.160, 0 HR, 1 RBI) will get the start in center field.
Ryan Ludwick, LF5/2/2014 4:58:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati left fielder Ryan Ludwick won't start Friday against the Brewers. SOURCE: Reds on Twitter
Insight: It's a routine off day for Ludwick, who is hitting .259 this season with two homers and 12 RBI. Chris Heisey (.277, 1 HR, 6 RBI) is filling in at left field. Neither player is helpful in fantasy.
Billy Hamilton, CF5/1/2014 8:34:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton left Thursday's game with a sprained knuckle on his left hand. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: He's day-to-day. Hamilton was replaced in left field by Chris Heisey (.244, 1 HR, 6 RBI). Hamilton (.245, 1 HR, 6 RBI) is tied with Ben Revere for fourth in MLB with ten steals this season.
Tony Cingrani, SP5/1/2014 3:45:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Tony Cingrani has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder tendinitis.
Insight: That explains why he struggled on Wednesday. Cingrani has a 3.34 ERA and 32 Ks in 32 1/3 innings this season.
Tucker Barnhart, C5/1/2014 2:50:00 PM
Description: Reds backup catcher Tucker Barnhart will get another start on Thursday.
Insight: Brayan Pena is the workhorse with Devin Mesoraco out of the lineup, but Barnhart will get a chance today. He's 2-for-8 since being called up, both singles. Barnhart batted .260 at Double-A Pensacola last season with three homers and a .696 OPS. That's not fantasy worthy.
Jay Bruce, RF5/1/2014 10:33:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is 6-for-17 (.353) with four homers and eight RBI versus Milwaukee right-hander Marco Estrada.
Insight: The streaky Bruce has just two hits in his last 19 at-bats and may not be ready to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Aroldis Chapman, RP4/30/2014 7:12:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati manager Bryan Price said Wednesday that closer Aroldis Chapman (head) is likely 7-10 days away from returning to the team, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Chapman underwent surgery after taking a comebacker off his face in spring training and has made good progress. He'll begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Dayton on Thursday.
Billy Hamilton, CF4/30/2014 9:44:00 AM
Description: Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton boosted his average to .244 with three hits Tuesday in a win against the Cubs.
Insight: Hamilton became the fourth player this season to reach double-digit steals with his first inning theft of second base. Unfortunately, he was caught for the fifth time two innings later. This night was also notable for Hamilton because he took Jeff Samardzija deep for his first career home run. If Hamilton can keep hitting like this, he'll be a must-start in all formats.
Aroldis Chapman, RP4/29/2014 5:25:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman (head) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Low-A Dayton, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Chapman underwent surgery after taking a comebacker off his face in spring training and has made good progress. He could be back in 10-14 days.
Joey Votto, 1B4/28/2014 11:36:00 AM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is a career .214 hitter (6-for-28) versus Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija with eight strikeouts.
Insight: Considering he's a career .313 hitter, that's a huge drop off. The 2010 National League MVP is batting .287 with four homers and a .909 OPS, but he hasn't gone deep in 10 games. It probably won't happen Monday either.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot4/27/2014 5:02:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto fired eight scoreless innings Sunday against Atlanta.
Insight: The Reds weren't able to score for Cueto (2-2, 1.15 ERA) so he had to settle for a no-decision. Cueto has allowed just one earned run in his last 30 innings pitched (0.30 ERA). He and Julio Teheran, the two starters featured today at Turner Field, might be the two hottest pitchers in baseball right now.
Devin Mesoraco, C4/26/2014 4:47:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco (left hamstring) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Insight: This is a disaster for fantasy owners as Mesoraco has been the best hitting catcher in baseball this season. The former first-round pick is hitting .468 with six doubles, three homers and 13 RBI in 47 at bats this year.
Todd Frazier, 3B4/26/2014 2:22:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier left Friday's game with tightness in his left leg and is not in Saturday's starting lineup
Insight: Frazier (.256, 4 HR, 10 RBI) remained in the game earlier after an awkward slide into second base, but later came out of the game. Neftali Soto will make the start at the hot corner. Soto has just seven at-bats this season with a pair of hits.
Homer Bailey, SPCold4/25/2014 9:56:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Homer Bailey gave up five earned runs on nine hits in six innings Friday at Atlanta.
Insight: Bailey has a 6.15 ERA, a 1.78 WHIP and a 2.39 HR/9 in 26 1/3 innings this season. Home runs were an issue in the past for Bailey but he cleaned that up last year (0.86 HR/9). He should be OK once his .416 BABIP returns to normal.
Devin Mesoraco, C4/25/2014 9:26:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco left Friday's game with a strained left hamstring, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Mesoraco suffered the injury while rounding third base. Catcher Tucker Barnhart was removed from Triple-A Louisville's game shortly after Mesoraco's injury happend, so it appears the team expects to place Mesoraco on the DL and recall Barnhart. Mesoraco, a former first-round pick, is hitting .468 with six doubles, three homers and 13 RBI in 47 at-bats this year.
Devin Mesoraco, C 4/25/2014 9:26:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco appeared to pull a hamstring as he rounded third base trying to score from second during Friday's game.
Insight: Mesoraco fell down after coming around third base and then limped the rest of the way home. He was visably frustrated and immediately went to the clubhouse. The former first-round pick is hitting .468 with six doubles, three homers and 13 RBI in 47 at-bats this year.
Todd Frazier, 3B4/25/2014 9:04:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier left Friday's game with tightness in his left leg, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Frazier (.256, 4 HR, 10 RBI) remained in the game earlier after an awkward slide into second base, but his leg must have tightened up.
Mat Latos, SP4/25/2014 7:55:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos (elbow) threw on flat ground Friday for the third time since he was diagnosed with a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. SOURCE: C. Trent Rosecrans, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: Latos has made good progress and should be able to start throwing off a mound soon. When he throws a couple of bullpen sessions we should get a firmer timetable. The Reds haven't missed him yet because replacement Alfredo Simon is 3-1 with a 1.30 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP.
Tony Cingrani, SP4/24/2014 5:49:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Tony Cingrani held the Pirates to one run on six hits in six innings Thursday afternoon to pick up his second win of the season.
Insight: Cingrani has a 2.86 ERA and 30 Ks in 28 1/3 innings this season. His only blemish is a 4.76 BB/9.
Devin Mesoraco, CHot4/24/2014 12:01:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will bring an 11-game hitting streak into Thursday afternoon's game.
Insight: Through 11 games, Mesoraco is hitting a stunning .525 with three homers and 13 runs driven in.
Billy Hamilton, CF4/24/2014 11:58:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton is not in Thursday afternoon's starting lineup.
Insight: Hamilton had two consecutive multi-hit games to raise his average to .230, but Chris Heisey will get the start in center field. Heisey is batting .278 in limited action.
Jay Bruce, RFHot4/23/2014 10:49:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce has gone 10-for-21 with three doubles, a homer, five RBI, five runs in his last five games.
Insight: Bruce raised his averagefrom .157 to .250 during that timeframe. He went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two steals Wednesday.
Zack Cozart, SSCold4/23/2014 12:14:00 PM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart hasn't done much versus Pirates starter Charlie Morton.
Insight: Cozart has only managed one hit in 13 at bats against the right-hander. With a .149 average through 18 games, Cozart hasn't been on the fantasy radar.
Todd Frazier, 3B4/23/2014 12:10:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier has had good success against Pirates starter Charlie Morton (5-for-9).
Insight: Frazier has had his moments this year (four homers, ten RBI) but he's probably just an average fantasy third baseman. Today, however, he should definitely be starting.
Billy Hamilton, CF4/22/2014 10:03:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton went 2-for-5 with a steal and a run Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
Insight: Hamilton has gone 8-for-25 (.320) with five runs and six steals on six attempts his last six games after going 7-for-44 (.159) at the plate and 2-for-4 on the basepaths his first 13 games.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot4/22/2014 10:00:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Johnny Cueto threw a second straight complete game Tuesday.
Insight: Cueto (1.38 ERA, 0.77 WHIP) shut out the Pirates on three hits his last start, and he victimized them again Tuesday in a 4-1 win. The right-hander has given up 19 hits and six earned runs while striking out 39 in 39 innings this season.
Devin Mesoraco, CHot4/22/2014 2:45:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is not in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Insight: Through 10 games, Mesoraco is hitting a stunning .541 with three homers and 12 runs driven in. It's a shame he has to split time with Brayan Pena behind the plate while his bat is this hot.
Aroldis Chapman, RP4/21/2014 4:05:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman (head) will throw live batting practice Wednesday, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquire.
Insight: Next step after BP is a rehab assignment. He's expected to return in mid-May. Chapman had to undergo surgery to repair facial fractures after being hit on March 19.
Jay Bruce, RF4/21/2014 11:38:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is still seeking his first hit against Pittsburgh starter Francisco Liriano.

Devin Mesoraco, CHot4/20/2014 9:14:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco continued his torrid start to the season with three more hits Sunday in a win against the Cubs.
Insight: Through nine games, Mesoraco is hitting an impossible .515 with three homers and 11 runs driven in. It's a shame he has to split time with Brayan Pena (.308, 0 HR, 1 RBI) behind the plate.
Zack Cozart, SS4/20/2014 9:07:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati shortstop Zack Cozart broke out for three hits Sunday in a win over the Cubs.
Insight: He also drove in three runs with two of those coming on a homer in the seventh. Cozart hasn't been very productive this season (.153 AVG in 59 at bats) so maybe Sunday is a sign that he's close to getting back on track.
Brandon Phillips, 2BCold4/20/2014 9:46:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips has mustered three hits in 24 at-bats (.125) against Carlos Villanueva of the Cubs.

Jay Bruce, RF 4/19/2014 7:29:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce went 3-for-3 with a walk and one RBI Saturday against the Cubs.
Insight: Bruce has been much more selective this year than in the past -- he has a career-low 18.3 percent chase rate and a career-high 20.3 percent walk rate. However, he's only batting .204 with two homers.
Billy Hamilton, CF4/19/2014 7:22:00 PM

Insight: X-rays came back negative. Ludwick is averaging .289 with a pair of homers and six RBI while striking out 13 times. He needs a good season to protect Joey Votto in the Reds lineup.
Jay Bruce, RFCold4/19/2014 10:28:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is an ugly 1-for-14 (.071) against Chicago right-hander Edwin Jackson with five strikeouts.
Insight: The streaky Bruce is batting .157 this season and should be avoided until he gets hot.
Joey Votto, 1BHot4/19/2014 10:26:00 AM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is a career .375 hitter with a pair of home runs against Cubs starter Edwin Jackson.
Insight: The 2010 National League MVP is off to a fine start, batting .309 with four homers and a 1.025 OPS. All of his home runs have come in the past seven days.
Brandon Phillips, 2B4/18/2014 7:54:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips left Friday's game because of back spasms. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: He went 1-for-2 before exiting in the third inning. Consider Phillips (.313, 1 HR, 3 RBI) day-to-day.
Todd Frazier, 3B4/18/2014 9:45:00 AM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier has a pair of homers and a career .375 batting average versus Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija.
Insight: Frazier isn't batting for much of an average, but he has scored six runs in the past four games. His fantasy owners are hoping he'll rebound from a disappointing 2013 campaign (.234 AVG in 531 at bats).
Devin Mesoraco, CHot4/18/2014 9:40:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco is 5-for-9 (.556) with a home run against Cubs starter Jeff Samasdzija.
Insight: Mesoraco has been hot since he returned from an oblique strain. he's batting .500 with three homers and nine RBI in six games. We saw former first-round catcher Jason Castro bloom last season for the Astros, and now it may be Mesoraco's turn. Start him in today's favorable matchup.

Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto homered for the third time in his last four games Monday against the Pirates.

Jay Bruce, RF4/14/2014 9:59:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is a must-sit on Monday night in an unfavorable matchup.
Insight: Bruce is a career .086 hitter (3-for-35) with 16 strikeouts in his matchups against Pirates lefty Wandy Rodriguez. The streaky Bruce is batting .179 this season.
Joey Votto, 1B4/14/2014 9:57:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto is a career .352 hitter (19-for-54) with seven extra base hits and a .952 OPS against Pittsburgh left-hander Wandy Rodriguez.
Insight: Both of Votto's home runs this season came off left-handers (David Price, Cesar Ramos). Beware, however, that there is rain forecasted for Cincinnati for most of the day and night and they may have trouble getting the game in.
Tony Cingrani, SP4/13/2014 7:48:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Tony Cingrani owns a 20/9 K/BB, a 2.60 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 17 1/3 frames this season.
Insight: We'd like to see him get his walks down, but there's no arguing the 24-year-old is tough to hit. He's allowed just 86 hits in 127 career innings.
Devin Mesoraco, CHot4/13/2014 7:42:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco has gone 7-for-14 with three doubles, two homers and six RBI since he returned from an oblique strain.

Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips had three singles in five at-bats Sunday against the Rays and is hitting .327 with a homer and three RBI this season.
Insight: Phillips has 11 Ks in 52 plate appearances and has benefited from a .405 BABIP. He's not a .300 hitter and fantasy owners shouldn't expect this to continue. He also doesn't run much anymore (five steals last year, zero this year).
Joey Votto, 1B4/13/2014 7:38:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto hit his second homer of the season Sunday against the Rays.

Mat Latos, SP4/13/2014 11:36:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Mat Latos has been diagnosed with a flexor mass strain in his right elbow. He's out indefinitely. SOURCE: C. Trent Rosecrans, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: A recent MRI revealed the bad news. There doesn't appear to be any damage to his UCL, which means Tommy John surgery won't be necessary. Either way, we wouldn't expect Latos (14-7, 3.16 ERA in 2013) to be back on a mound anytime soon.
Alfredo Simon, SP4/12/2014 9:58:00 PM
Description: Reds right-hander Alfredo Simon (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4 K's, 1 BB) was lights out Saturday in a loss to Tampa Bay.
Insight: Simon's only blemish came in the second inning when he gave up a solo homer to James Loney. Unfortunately for Simon, Alex Cobb was just as dominant for the Rays, surrendering only four hits over seven scoreless frames. Simon (1-1, 1.20 ERA) will try to redeem himself next time out against the Cubs.
Joey Votto, 1B4/11/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto blasted his first homer of the season Friday against the Rays.
Insight: Votto (.257) took David Price to left field to break a shutout in the bottom of the ninth inning. Votto has just two RBI this season because opponents pitch around him with men on base and he refuses to expand the zone.
Aroldis Chapman, RP4/11/2014 8:25:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman (head) will throw a bullpen session Monday, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Description: Reds starter Mike Leake blanked the Cardinals on four hits over eight innings Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Leake had his best season in 2013, going 14-7 with a 3.37 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Due to a lack of strikeouts, Leake is an average fantasy option.

Insight: Mesoraco returned from an oblique strain Tuesday and has gone 4-for-8 with two doubles and a homer in two games. He hit .238 with nine longballs and 42 RBI in 323 at-bats last season.
Billy Hamilton, CF4/9/2014 6:19:00 PM

Description: Reds starter Mat Latos was scratched from his scheduled rehab start on Tuesday due to elbow inflammation, according to Jon Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Description: Reds relief pitcher Jonathan Broxton (elbow) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Jay Bruce, RF4/8/2014 1:40:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is a career .438 hitter with four extra base hits in 16 at-bats versus Cardinals starter Lance Lynn.
Insight: The outfielder doesn't get as much credit as he should because of a mediocre batting average which sometimes hides the fact that he's been a lock for 30 homers and 95-plus RBI for the past three seasons. Start him Tuesday.
Brayan Pena, C4/7/2014 10:04:00 PM
Description: Reds catcher Brayan Pena bashed three hits Monday in a loss to St. Louis.
Insight: It's his first three-hit game since August 13th. Despite a .298 average since the start of 2013, Pena doesn't play enough to warrant fantasy consideration.
Billy Hamilton, CF4/7/2014 2:46:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton (finger) is back in the lineup for Monday against St. Louis.
Insight: Things couldn't have gone much worse for Hamilton in his first five games of 2014. He went 0-for-12 with six Ks and hurt his finger Friday when he was caught stealing while pinch running. Hopefully he can start to feel more comfortable in the batter's box.

Hamilton was able to play center field in the ninth inning Saturday, but his finger is probably giving him trouble when he grips a bat.
Joey Votto, 1B4/6/2014 9:33:00 AM

He made three trips to the DL last year due to a right lat strain and has only thrown 200 innings once in his career, but he has posted a 2.61 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP when he's been on the hill the last three seasons.
Tucker Barnhart, C4/5/2014 12:16:00 PM
Description: Reds backup catcher Tucker Barnhart will get the start on Saturday.
Insight: Brayan Pena is getting a day of rest. barnhart batted .260 at Double-A Pensacola last season with three homers and a .696 OPS. Those numbers won't earn you a start on any fantasy team.
Devin Mesoraco, C4/5/2014 12:12:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco (left oblique strain) is expected to return Monday or Tuesday, according to Reds general manager Walt Jocketty. SOURCE: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Description: Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton is not in the starting lineup on Saturday after missing Friday.

Jonathan Broxton, RP4/2/2014 8:42:00 PM
Description: According to the Associated Press, Reds manager Bryan Price said Wednesday that Jonathan Broxton (elbow) could return from the DL next week.
Insight: Broxton would step into the closer role almost immediately. "Once he gets reacquainted with being back here, he'll be that guy to hold down the fort until (Aroldis) Chapman's ready to go," Price said. Chapman was hit in the head by a line drive during spring training and had a plate inserted above his left eye. He'll miss all of April and some of May.
Billy Hamilton, CF3/31/2014 8:43:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton struck out in all four trips to the plate on Opening Day.
Insight: Yikes. Besides an injury, that's the absolute worst way Hamilton could have started the season, as he didn't even get a chance to put his speed on display on a ball in play. Hamilton hit .327 with one home run and nine steals on nine attempts during the spring.
Joey Votto, 1B3/31/2014 12:36:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto won't be of much use to fantasy owners Monday versus Adam Wainwright.

Insight: Latos had surgery to repair a torn left meniscus in February and is still working his way back. The right-hander has thrown between 184 2/3 and 210 2/3 innings, struck out 185-189 batters and posted an ERA between 2.92 and 3.48 in each of the last four seasons, so he's a safe pick in the middle rounds.
Johnny Cueto, SP3/27/2014 5:54:00 PM
Description: The Reds have cleared Johnny Cueto to start on Opening Day, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Cueto was scratched from a Cactus League start due to irritation near his shoulder blade, but he fanned 11 batters over five innings in a minor league game on Tuesday. Cueto made just 11 starts last season due to a recurring lat injury that landed him on the DL three separate times.

Description: Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton has stolen nine bags without being caught this spring. He also has hit .341 with two doubles, one triple, a homer and a 7/6 K/BB in 44 at-bats.
Insight: There's some risk involved with drafting Hamilton at his ADP of 64 in Yahoo leagues, but he has legitimate 100-steal, 100-run potential.

Description: Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman will be out 6-to-8 weeks after undergoing facial surgery on Thursday. Chapman took a line drive off the face Wednesday in a game against Kansas City. SOURCE: Reds on Twitter

Mat Latos, SP3/17/2014 9:17:00 PM

The right-hander has thrown between 184 2/3 and 210 2/3 innings, struck out 185-189 batters and posted an ERA between 2.92 and 3.48 in each of the last four seasons, so he's a safe pick in the middle rounds.
Homer Bailey, SP3/15/2014 7:19:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Homer Bailey missed Saturday's game with a strained groin. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer

Description: Reds outfielder Chris Heisey is batting .400 with four home runs in 30 spring training at-bats.

Description: Cincinnati righthander Mike Leake missed Sunday's start because of a strained abdominal muscle but it looks like he's going to resume throwing on Monday. SOURCE: John Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: Opening Day isn't for another four weeks so the Reds can afford to ease Leake back into action. Though he isn't a big strikeout guy, it's tough to ignore the impressive ERA Leake posted in 2013 (3.37 in 192 1/3 innings).
Mat Latos, SP2/27/2014 10:50:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mat Latos, who had surgery to repair a torn left meniscus three weeks ago, said that he suffered a "simple flare-up" with the knee while working out. SOURCE: mlb.com

Insight: Latos had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee less than two weeks ago. He also had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow in October, so he'll carry a bit of risk in fantasy drafts. The right-hander has thrown between 184 2/3 and 210 2/3 innings, struck out 185-189 batters and posted an ERA between 2.92 and 3.48 in each of the last four seasons.
Homer Bailey, SP2/19/2014 2:51:00 PM
Description: The Reds and Homer Bailey have agreed to a six-year, $105 million contract extension.
Insight: The deal includes a mutual option for a seventh year which carries a $25 salary or $5 million buyout. Bailey had his best season in 2013, winning 11 games with a 3.49 ERA (3.31 FIP) and 199 strikeouts in 209 innings. He has thrown two no-hitters since September 2012.
Mat Latos, SP2/14/2014 1:47:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati starter Mat Latos had surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. SOURCE: MLBlogs
Insight: Add this on top of last October's surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow and Latos will be a high-risk selection at this year's draft. He had one of his best seasons in 2013, finishing with 14 wins and a 3.16 ERA. Latos should start throwing again in about 10 days, but could have a delayed start to his season.
Jeff Francis, SP1/13/2014 9:38:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati inked a minor league deal with lefthander Jeff Francis on Monday. SOURCE: Jerry Crasnick, ESPN
Insight: Francis didn't do much in Colorado last season (3-5, 6.27 ERA in 23 appearances). He's unlikely to crack the Reds' starting rotation in 2014.
Billy Hamilton, CF12/22/2013 9:48:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton appears to the team's starting centerfielder and leadoff hitter with Shin-Soo Choo now a Texas Ranger.
Insight: Given 500+ at-bats, Hamilton is the favorite to win the NL stolen base title. He managed to steal 13 in 13 games last season in his MLB cameo and stole 75 bases at Triple-A Louisville in 123 games last season.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF12/19/2013 11:27:00 AM
Description: According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, the Yankees offered Shin-Soo Choo seven years and $140 million but he turned it down.
Insight: There's no way Choo is going to get a better offer than that so it's pretty puzzling that he would reject it. The Astros are also said to be interested in Choo, who hit .285 last season with 20 steals and 21 HR. His .423 on base percentage was fourth-best in the majors last season.
Bronson Arroyo, SP11/30/2013 2:03:00 PM
Description: The Mets are making a play for free agent righthander Bronson Arroyo. SOURCE: Chris Cotillo, SB Nation
Insight: The Giants had been the frontrunner for Arroyo until they signed Tim Hudson and Ryan Vogelsong to fill out their starting rotation. Arroyo is 3-0 with a 2.32 ERA in four career starts at Citi Field.
Skip Schumaker, OF11/18/2013 9:18:00 PM
Description: Skip Schumaker will be a member of the Cincinnati Reds as soon as he passes his physical. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The sides agreed on a two-year, $5 million contract earlier today. Schumaker hit .263 as a part-time player for the Dodgers last season.
Bronson Arroyo, SP11/10/2013 3:38:00 PM
Description: Free agent starter Bronson Arroyo is being pursued by Minnesota, Philadelphia and San Francisco. SOURCE: Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe
Insight: Arroyo pitches to contact, which can get him in trouble sometimes, but he did manage to post an ERA under four for the second consecutive year. At age 36, he won't net more than a two-year contract.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF10/19/2013 2:42:00 PM
Description: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports believes Reds center fielder Shin-Soo Choo could be an option for the Astros when he becomes a free agent.
Insight: No disrespect to Heyman, but Choo leaving Cincinnati to play for the Astros seems highly unlikely. Houston's payroll was the lowest in baseball this season and the Astros already have their center fielder of the future in top prospect George Springer. Overpaying for a 31-year-old who can't hit lefties wouldn't be a wise move for an organization that's trying to rebuild.
Brandon Phillips, 2B10/19/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: The Braves could be willing to swap Dan Uggla for Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips. SOURCE: David O'Brien, Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Insight: Obviously, it's going to take more than that to pry Phillips away from the Reds. Uggla (.179, 22 HR, 55 RBI) is coming off a terrible season and wasn't even included on Atlanta's postseason roster. The Braves will probably have to throw in a prospect or two to sweeten the deal.
Brandon Phillips, 2B10/19/2013 10:24:00 AM
Description: It appears that Brandon Phillips is on his way out of Cincinnati. SOURCE: Bob Nightengale, USA Today
Insight: The Reds are trying to trade their All-Star second baseman but it's not going to be easy. Phillips (.261, 18 HR, 103 RBI) signed a six-year extension with the Reds last season and is still owed $50 million over the next four seasons. For the Reds to get a deal done, there's a good chance they'll have to eat a chunk of his salary.
Mat Latos, SP10/16/2013 3:52:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati starter Mat Latos had surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow last Friday. SOURCE: MLBlogs.com
Insight: He's in no danger of missing spring training. Latos had one of his best seasons in 2013, finishing with 14 wins and a 3.16 ERA. He'll be one of the first pitchers off the board in next spring's fantasy draft.
Mat Latos, SP10/1/2013 9:22:00 PM
Description: Reds manager Dusty Baker said Mat Latos' elbow has made a "miraculous improvement," according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.
Insight: Latos went 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 210 2/3 innings this season and was supposed to start the Wild Card game Tuesday at Pittsburgh, but a bone spur in his elbow prevented him from doing so. Baker said either Latos or Homer Bailey would start Game 1 of the NLDS against the Cardinals if Cincinnati wins Tuesday.
Johnny Cueto, SPHot10/1/2013 11:26:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right-hander Johnny Cueto started two games against the Pirates this season yielding just three hits and one earned run over 12 1/3 IP. He struck out nine batters.
Insight: He will be going up against Pirates' left-hander Francisco Liriano. Cueto is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA since coming off the disabled list in mid-September.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF10/1/2013 11:22:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Shin-Soo Choo is just a .194 career hitter (6-for-31) with 10 strikeouts against Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Insight: Fantasy owners can't complain about production this season as be batted .285 with 21 HR, 54 RBI, 107 runs, 20 SB and an .885 OPS. Unfortunately, in this one-game, play-in matchup, history is not on his side.
Jay Bruce, RF10/1/2013 11:19:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is hitless in 11 at-bats with six strikeouts against Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Insight: The outfielder has hit 30 homers for the third straight season, scored 80 runs for the fourth straight and reached 100 RBI for the first time in his career in 2013, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Todd Frazier, 3B10/1/2013 11:13:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier is 3-for-9 (.333) with a pair of solo shots against Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Insight: Frazier was a bit of a disappointment to fantasy owners after a solid 2012 season (.273, 19 HR, 67 RBI, .829 OPS). In 109 more at-bats this season he hit the same number of homers, knocked in just six more runs, saw his batting average drop 39 points and his OPS 108 points. We like this matchup, however.
Brandon Phillips, 2B9/30/2013 8:53:00 PM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is probable for Tuesday's Wild Card matchup against the Pirates. SOURCE: Jon Fay, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: Phillips missed the regular season finale with a bruised shin but it's nothing serious. The three-time All-Star hit .302 in 63 regular season at bats against Pittsburgh.
Mat Latos, SP9/29/2013 12:41:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mat Latos is dealing with a bone chip in his elbow, but manager Dusty Baker said the team hopes the righty will be able to pitch Thursday if Cincinnati beats the Pirates in the Wild Card game. SOURCE: C. Trent Rosecrans, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: Latos went 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 210 2/3 innings this season, but the arm issue caused the Reds to go with Johnny Cueto to start the one-game playoff.
Johnny Cueto, SP9/28/2013 8:47:00 PM
Description: Johnny Cueto will draw the start Tuesday in Cincinnati's wild card playoff against Pittsburgh. SOURCE: Mark Sheldon, MLB.com
Insight: He'll be going up against Pirates lefthander Francisco Liriano. Cueto is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA since coming off the disabled list in mid-September. The winner of Tuesday's game is likely to face NL Central champ St. Louis in the Divison Series.
Jay Bruce, RF9/28/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce has hit two doubles, a triple and two home runs off Pirates starter Charlie Morton.
Insight: Bruce is 6-for-19 (.316) lifetime against Morton, Saturday's scheduled starter. The outfielder has hit 30 homers for the third straight season, scored 80 runs for the fourth straight and reached 100 RBI for the first time in his career in 2013.
Jay Bruce, RF9/27/2013 10:00:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is just 3-for-24 (.125) versus Pittsburgh hurler A.J. Burnett.
Insight: The streaky Bruce has put together another solid season with 30 HR and 107 RBI, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Billy Hamilton, CF9/25/2013 6:20:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton finally got caught on the base paths Wednesday against the Mets.
Insight: It's the first time Hamilton has been caught stealing in 14 attempts. Despite the overwhelming success he's had in his first 12 games in the big leagues, manager Dusty Baker said he still isn't sure if Hamilton will make the Reds' postseason roster.
Billy Hamilton, CFHot9/25/2013 10:54:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati rookie center fielder Billy Hamilton will start in center and lead off Wednesday afternoon.
Insight: Hamilton is 13-for-13 in stolen base chances while batting .429. As long as he keeps hitting, he'll keep stealing as it appears he can't be stopped.
Mike Leake, SP9/24/2013 10:17:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mike Leake had an ugly outing Tuesday against the Mets, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Insight: Leake threw 13 2/3 scoreless innings over his previous two starts and won each of his previous three, but he just didn't have it Tuesday. With just four games left this season, Leake won't start again. He's had his best season this year, going 14-7 with a 3.37 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 192 1/3 innings.
Mat Latos, SPHot9/24/2013 7:11:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mat Latos will start Wednesday's game, which lines him up to pitch the Reds' Wild Card play-in game on Oct. 2, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Latos is 14-6 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP this season but has posted a 4.67 ERA over his last 34 2/3 innings.
Brandon Phillips, 2B9/24/2013 1:24:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips is a career .375 hitter with a pair of homers and a 1.188 OPS versus Mets left-hander Jonathon Niese.
Insight: The Reds clinched a playoff spot Monday night, but are still in the running for a division title so shouldn't rest anyone.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF9/23/2013 6:43:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Shin-Soo Choo is back in the starting lineup after missing back-to-back games with a jammed thumb.
Insight: He'll hit leadoff against the Mets. Choo and the Reds are tied with Pittsburgh in the NL Wild Card. They're also two games back of the first place Cardinals in the NL Central.
Shin-Soo Choo, CFCold9/22/2013 12:43:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Shin-Soo Choo's X-rays on his left thumb came back negative and he is expected to return to the lineup Monday, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Description: Reds center fielder Shin-Soo Choo will miss a game or two with a jammed left thumb, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.
Insight: Choo, who is in the midst of a 1-for-17 slump at the plate, hurt his thumb diving headfirst into first base Friday night.
Billy Hamilton, CF9/21/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati rookie center fielder Billy Hamilton will start Sunday against the Pirates.
Insight: Hamilton has just one start and eight at-bats this season, but he has served as a pinch-runner since being called up and is wreaking havoc on the basepaths. He has come around to score seven times and is 10-for-10 in stolen base chances. He went 3-for-4 with four steals in his first career start Wednesday.
Todd Frazier, 3B9/21/2013 4:07:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier won't compete in Saturday night's contest versus Pittsburgh.
Insight: His .100 career average against Pirates righthander A.J. Burnett could have something to do with his absence. Jack Hannahan (.224, 1 HR, 14 RBI) is filling in at third base.
Shin-Soo Choo, CFCold9/21/2013 4:04:00 PM
Description: Reds center fielder Shin-Soo Choo won't play Saturday against Pittsburgh. SOURCE: Mark Sheldon, MLB.com
Insight: He jammed his thumb in last night's game and will get the day off to rest it. Choo (.283, 21 HR, 52 RBI) is in the midst of a 1-for-17 slump at the plate.
Billy Hamilton, CF9/20/2013 11:00:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton improved to 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts in just his ninth career game.
Insight: Amazing. Hamilton has just one start and has eight at-bats this season, but he has served as a pinch-runner since being called up and is wreaking havoc on the basepaths. He has come around to score seven times already and is a must-add in all leagues.
Tony Cingrani, SP9/20/2013 6:44:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Tony Cingrani (back) is still experiencing discomfort when he throws off a mound, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Cingrani (7-4, 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) went on the disabled list in August with a strained back and has dealt with a recurrence of back spasms recently. He could be out for the rest of the regular season.
Jay Bruce, RF9/20/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is hitless in eight tries with five strikeouts versus Pittsburgh lefty Francisco Liriano.
Insight: The streaky Bruce is in one of his typical hot streaks with four consecutive multi-hit games and 10 RBI, but this is a tough matchup for him.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF9/20/2013 10:46:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Shin-Soo Choo is just 6-for-27 (all singles) versus Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano with nine strikeouts.
Insight: Choo started September on fire, but has since cooled batting just .214 over the past seven days. This is an unfavorable matchup to be avoided.
Billy Hamilton, CF9/18/2013 6:11:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton is set to make his first major league start Wednesday against the Astros.
Insight: He'll bat out of the nine hole. The speedster is still looking for his first major league hit (0-for-3).
Jay Bruce, RF9/17/2013 12:07:00 PM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is hitless in eight tries versus Houston starter Jordan Lyles.
Insight: The streaky Bruce may be about to break out of a slump as he's posted two hits in each of the last two games after going 1-for-16 in the previous five contests, but this is an unfavorable matchup.
Joey Votto, 1BHot9/17/2013 12:04:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is 5-for-7 (.714) with three extra base hits versus Houston right-hander Jordan Lyles.
Insight: Votto has a phenomenal .433 on-base percentage and is hitting .309, but his patient approach has prevented him from producing the big-time fantasy numbers that are expected of a star first baseman. He has 23 homers and 70 RBI in 547 at-bats. He's likely to swing the bat on Tuesday in the highly-favorable matchup.
Sean Marshall, RP9/16/2013 8:43:00 PM
Description: Reds reliever Sean Marshall was activated from the disabled list on Monday.
Insight: A sprained shoulder ended up costing Marshall most of the season. Now he'll get in about two weeks of prep work before the playoffs.
Johnny Cueto, SP9/16/2013 6:22:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Johnny Cueto has been activated from the DL.

Tony Cingrani, SP9/16/2013 12:11:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Tony Cingrani, who left Tuesday's start against the Cubs with a recurrence of back spasms, is expected to miss Monday's scheduled start against Houston.
Insight: Cingrani (7-4, 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) went on the disabled list in August with a strained back but only required the minimum stay before returning last week. However, the Reds may choose to shut him down at this point.
Johnny Cueto, SP9/15/2013 11:21:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto will return Monday against Houston. SOURCE: C. Trent Rosecrans, Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: Back problems have limited Cueto to just nine starts this year. The Reds are probably going to be pretty careful with him so don't expect him to throw more than four or five innings in his first start back.
Ryan Ludwick, LF9/15/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick has hit three homers and gone 9-for-24 (.375) with nine RBI and five walks against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Ludwick hasn't done anything of note since returning from a shoulder injury that cost him more than four months this season. He's hitting .264 with two homers in 97 plate appearances. Maybe a matchup with Gallardo can help him get on the right track.
Jay Bruce, RFCold9/15/2013 10:53:00 AM
Description: Reds right fielder Jay Bruce is 1-for-16 (.063) over his last five games but his matchup Sunday works in his favor.
Insight: Bruce has gone 13-for-37 (.351) with two homers against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo. The 26-year-old is one homer away from reaching 30 for the third straight season and seven RBI away from his first 100-RBI campaign.
Johnny Cueto, SP9/14/2013 12:35:00 PM
Description: Reds righthander Johnny Cueto had a good bullpen session on Saturday and is expected to get a start on Monday or Tuesday.
Insight: He's been struggling with back problems since June. He's 4-2 with a 3.33 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 41 Ks in 48 2/3 IP.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot9/11/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is a career .357 hitter (5for-14) with a pair of home runs and a 1.256 OPS versus Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija.
Insight: Frazier was horrible in August (.180, .585 OPS), but has bounced back in September batting .314 with an .857 OPS. This favorable matchup should keep him in the zone.
Tony Cingrani, SP9/10/2013 9:09:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Tony Cingrani left Tuesday's start against the Cubs with a recurrence of back spasms, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Cingrani went on the disabled list in August with a strained back but only required the minimum stay before returning last week. However, the Reds may choose to shut him down at this point.
Jay Bruce, RF9/10/2013 11:50:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce is just 1-for-11 with four strikeouts versus Cubs starter Edwin Jackson.
Insight: Barring a disastrous slump over the final month of the season, Bruce likely will reach 100 RBI for the first time in his career as well as his third straight 30-homer season. Through 143 games, he's hitting .266 with 29 homers and 93 RBI.
Joey Votto, 1B9/9/2013 1:42:00 PM
Description: Reds first baseman Joey Votto is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts versus Cubs left-hander Travis Wood.
Insight: Votto has a phenomenal .430 on-base percentage and is hitting .303, but his patient approach has prevented him from producing the big-time fantasy numbers that are expected of a star first baseman. He has 22 homers and 66 RBI in 522 at-bats. Fantasy owners could have gotten that type of power from cheaper sources like Anthony Rizzo, Brandon Moss or Mitch Moreland.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF9/9/2013 1:36:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Shin-Soo Choo has one hit in 10 at-bats versus Cubs starter Travis Wood with six strikeouts.
Insight: Choo has been on fire in September, batting .464 over eight games with three homers and a 1.427 OPS, but this is a matchup to avoid.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot9/9/2013 1:33:00 PM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is a career .429 hitter (6-for-140 with a pair of home runs and a 1.357 OPS versus Cubs left-hander Travis Wood.
Insight: Frazier was horrible in August (.180, .585 OPS), but has bounced back in September batting .345 while hitting safely in six of seven games. This favorable matchup should keep him in the zone.
Joey Votto, 1B9/7/2013 8:27:00 PM
Description: The Dodgers have failed to get Joey Votto out in the first two games of their series against the Reds. The first baseman went 4-for-4 with a double, a homer, five walks and three runs in those games.
Insight: Votto has a phenomenal .432 on-base percentage and is hitting .305, but his patient approach has prevented him from producing the big-time fantasy numbers that are expected of a first baseman. He has 22 homers and 66 RBI in 518 at-bats.
Billy Hamilton, CF9/7/2013 8:24:00 PM
Description: Reds prospect Billy Hamilton has gone 4-for-4 in stolen base chances since being called up to the majors.
Insight: Hamilton doesn't have a plate appearance yet; he pinch ran in four games, stole a base in each one and scored three runs. It's not often a pinch-runner can make a fantasy impact, but that's what Hamilton is doing.
Brandon Phillips, 2B9/7/2013 11:36:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: He left Thursday's game with a quad injury, but it wasn't that serious and he was in Friday's lineup. It's more likely simply a rest day because of an unfavorable matchup. He's a career .188 hitter against Zack Greinke.
Ryan Ludwick, LF9/7/2013 10:59:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is just 1-for-14 (.071) versus Dodgers starter Zack Greinke.
Insight: Ludwick, who suffered a shoulder injury on Opening Day and missed more than four months, is hitless over his last two games and getting a day off due to this unfavorable matchup should be expected.
Joey Votto, 1B9/7/2013 10:58:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto is a career .316 hitter (6-for-19) against Dodgers right-hander Zack Geinke, but has three solo homers among his six hits.
Insight: Votto will likely lead the league in OBP for the fourth consecutive season, but his fantasy value has taken a nosedive in 2013 as he's knocked in just 66 runs this season and his .922 OPS is his worst in five seasons.
Brandon Phillips, 2B9/6/2013 4:25:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips left Thursday's game with a quad injury, but it wasn't that serious and he's back in the lineup for Friday's lineup.
Insight: It was only a bruise. Phillips, the only second baseman in the majors with 100 RBI, should be fine going forward.
Joey Votto, 1B9/6/2013 1:28:00 PM
Description: Despite the lefty-lefty matchup, Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto is a career .444 hitter (8-for-18) with a 1.196 OPS versus Dodgers starter Chris Capuano.
Insight: Votto will likely lead the league in OBP for the fourth consecutive season, but his fantasy value has taken a nosedive in 2013 as he's knocked in just 64 runs this season and his .911 OPS is his worst in five seasons.
Todd Frazier, 3BHot9/5/2013 10:35:00 PM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier ended a 13-game homerless drought by going deep twice Thursday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Thursday was Frazier's first multi-homer game since April 5th. He's eight for his last 16 after going 3-for-24 in his previous six outings.
Brandon Phillips, 2B9/5/2013 10:21:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips left Thursday's game with a quad injury. SOURCE: Reds.com
Insight: It's only a bruise. Phillips, the only second baseman in the majors with 100 RBI, should be fine for Friday's series opener against the Dodgers.
Johnny Cueto, SP9/5/2013 10:12:00 PM
Description: Reds righthander Johnny Cueto will probably pitch out of the bullpen when he returns from the DL. SOURCE: Reds.com
Insight: Basically, the Reds will be treating his relief appearances like rehab outings. If he progresses quickly enough, Cueto could return to the starting rotation before the end of the season. He's been struggling with back problems since June.
Tony Cingrani, SP9/5/2013 6:31:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati lefthander Tony Cingrani has officially been activated from the 15-day disabled list. He'll start Thursday against St. Louis.
Insight: He was out with a strained back. Cingrani is 1-0 against the Cardinals this season with a 5.40 ERA.
Devin Mesoraco, C9/5/2013 6:27:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco won't play Thursday against St. Louis.
Insight: Mesoraco has a strained hamstring. Ryan Hanigan will make the start behind the plate. Mesoraco (.245, 8 HR, 37 RBI) had been in a 2-for-18 slide prior to the injury.
Zack Cozart, SS9/5/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart is 5-for-14 with a pair of home runs and a 1.257 OPS against Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn.
Insight: Cozart hasn't improved on his first full season and fantasy owners are largely ignoring his work this year. He's averaging just .252 with a .661 OPS and no speed, but Thursday is a rare favorable matchup.
Homer Bailey, SPHot9/3/2013 9:57:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Homer Bailey won his fifth straight decision with seven shutout innings Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Bailey evened up his record at 10-10 with Tuesday's victory, which saw him strike out eight, walk one and allow just two hits. The right-hander has a 1.27 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP over his last four starts.
Tony Cingrani, SP9/3/2013 6:11:00 PM
Description: Reds pitcher Tony Cingrani (back) is ready to return to the rotation. He'll start Thursday against the Cardinals, according to Jon Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Insight: Cingrani was placed on the disabled list after leaving his start on Aug. 20 with a lower back strain. He'll end up missing the minimum amount of time.
Mat Latos, SPHot9/2/2013 7:15:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati starter Mat Latos threw his first complete game of the season Monday against the Cardinals.
Insight: Latos gave up four hits and two runs in a 7-2 win. He has gone 6-2 with a 1.97 ERA over his last nine starts and is 14-5 with a 2.98 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP this season.
Joey Votto, 1BCold9/2/2013 7:05:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto went 1-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk Monday against the Cardinals.
Insight: The super-patient Votto has 21 homers but driven in just 64 runs this season. That's a product of walking 61 times in 278 plate appearances with men on base and hitting 16 of his 21 longballs with none on (Cincinnati No. 2 hitters have an OBP of .282 this season).
Shin-Soo Choo, CFHot9/2/2013 7:04:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Shin-Soo Choo has gone 12-for-27 with three doubles and three homers over his last six games.
Insight: He homered Sunday for the second straight game. The outfielder has 19 blasts this season, his most since 2010.
Billy Hamilton, CF9/2/2013 11:46:00 AM
Description: Speedster and Reds top prospect Billy Hamilton has officially been called up to the major leagues.
Insight: Hamilton is just an average hitter but he's practically unstoppable on the base paths. In 255 minor league games the last two seasons, the 22-year-old has swiped 230 bases while getting caught 52 times (81.6 percent success rate).
Todd Frazier, 3BCold9/2/2013 10:48:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati third baseman Todd Frazier has been ice cold over his last six games (3-for-24) and Monday's encounter with Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright probably won't improve his predicament.
Insight: The breakout year we were all expecting for Frazier in 2013 just hasn't happened. In fact, he's actually taken a step back in his second year in the bigs (.228, 13 HR, 60 RBI in 126 games). He's hitting .154 against Wainwright and shouldn't be started in any fantasy leagues on Labor Day.
Joey Votto, 1BCold9/2/2013 10:43:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto could have a rough Labor Day with Adam Wainwright throwing for the Cardinals.
Insight: Votto's career average in 23 at bats against Wainwright is only .130. He's in the midst of a 2-for-19 tailspin and Monday's meeting with Wainwright probably won't help matters.
Shin-Soo Choo, CFHot9/1/2013 7:51:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati center fielder Shin-Soo Choo connected on his 18th home run of the season Sunday in a loss to the Rockies.
Insight: The home run was part of a three-hit game for Choo, his second in as many days. The Reds leadoff hitter has been terrific this season. His .284 average is his highest since 2010.
Brandon Phillips, 2B9/1/2013 8:32:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 with three extra-base hits Saturday at Colorado.
Insight: Phillips doubles, tripled and homered while driving in two runs and scoring three. He hit .304 with four homers, 17 RBI and an .801 OPS in August.
Billy Hamilton, CF8/30/2013 8:48:00 PM
Description: Reds beat writer Jon Fay reports that Cincinnati will call up Billy Hamilton on Monday.
Insight: The 22-year-old outfielder is hitting .256 with six homers and 75 steals in 122 games with Triple-A Louisville. He set the minor league record with 155 steals last season while hitting .311 across several lower minor league levels. Fantasy owners desperate for steals can give him a shot, but he's unlikely to do more than pinch-run.
Homer Bailey, SP8/29/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Reds starter Homer Bailey struck out seven batters and scattered five hits over 7 1/3 scoreless frames Wednesday at St. Louis to improve to 9-10.
Insight: Bailey lowered his ERA to 3.55 with the performance. He hasn't lost in his last six starts (4-0).
Jay Bruce, RF8/29/2013 10:34:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce slammed his 26th homer of the season and drove in five runs Wednesday at St. Louis.
Insight: Barring a disastrous slump over the final month of the season, Bruce likely will reach 100 RBI for the first time in his career as well as his third straight 30-homer season. Through 130 games, he's hitting .270 with 26 homers and 87 RBI.
Brandon Phillips, 2B8/25/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is 6-for-15 (.400) with one homer in his career against Marco Estrada, who will throw Sunday for the Brewers.
Insight: Phillips has hit .378 (14-for-37) over his last nit games, but with just two extra-base hits in that span. He's slugging just .412 and has a .727 OPS this season, but those flaws have been covered up by his 95 RBI. Make sure he's in your lineup Sunday against Estrada.
Jay Bruce, RFCold8/25/2013 11:02:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce hasn't had a multi-hit game all month, but he has a great matchup Sunday against Brewers pitcher Marco Estrada.
Insight: Bruce is 6-for-14 (.429) with a double and four homers lifetime against Estrada. He's only hitting .192 with two homers in August, but this matchup is too good to avoid.
Bronson Arroyo, SPHot8/25/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Reds starter Bronson Arroyo is 4-0 with a 2.33 ERA over his last four starts.
Insight: He allowed three runs over seven innings Saturday against Milwaukee and the Reds provided him with six runs of support to get him his 13th win of the year. The right-hander has a 26/0 K/BB during his winning streak and has walked just 26 batters all season.
Ryan Ludwick, LF8/25/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick hit his first home run of the season Saturday night against Milwaukee.
Insight: Ludwick, who suffered a shoulder injury on Opening Day and missed more than four months, has gone 4-for-7 over his last two games after starting off 4-for-24 (.167) after returning from the disabled list. The veteran had 26 home runs in just 422 at-bats last season.
Chris Heisey, LF8/25/2013 10:36:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Chris Heisey is batting .400 with three home runs over his last seven games (four starts).
Insight: Now that Ryan Ludwick is back in the lineup, Heisey is just a fourth outfielder for Cincinnati. He failed to stand out as a starter in Ludwick's place and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.
Tony Cingrani, SP8/24/2013 10:55:00 PM
Description: The Reds have placed starter Tony Cingrani on the 15-day DL.
Insight: He's been battling a lower back strain. With Cingrani sidelined, Triple-A callup Greg Reynolds will get the nod Sunday against Milwaukee.
Ryan Ludwick, LF8/23/2013 12:03:00 PM
Description: Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is 8-for-22 (.364) with three homers and a 1.280 OPS versus Milwaukee right-hander Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Ludwick, who suffered a shoulder injury on Opening Day and missed more than four months, is batting just .167 in the nine games since his return and may not be able to take advantage of this favorable matchup.
Mat Latos, SPHot8/22/2013 3:38:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati starter Mat Latos struck out six, didn't walk a batter and allowed one run on five hits Wednesday in a win against Arizona.
Insight: Latos (13-4) was solid in his first year with the Reds, going 14-4 with a 3.48 ERA, and he has been even better in year two. He has given up just 11 homers in 169 innings (0.59 HR/9) and has a 2.93 ERA.
Tony Cingrani, SP8/21/2013 8:35:00 PM
Description: Reds rookie left-hander Tony Cingrani was feeling much better Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's start with a lower back strain. SOURCE: MLB.com
Insight: Cingrani will throw Thursday and see how his back feels, Reds trainer Paul Lessard said. "Ideally, we'll make sure he stays comfortable and loose and is able to throw. If he doesn't feel anything, he'll be able to make his next start." Cingrani's bullpen session Friday will be his biggest test.
Johnny Cueto, SP8/21/2013 5:33:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Johnny Cueto (lat) threw 40 pitches from 60 feet Wednesday. It was his first time throwing since going on the disabled list June 29 with a strained right lat muscle. SOURCE: Cincinnati Enquirer
Insight: The initial plan was for Cueto not to resume throwing until he had an MRI Friday. "I was feeling fine that’s what I told the doctor," Cueto said. "I’m not feeling any pain. I was feeling good. I talked to the trainer. He said, ‘let’s see how you’re feeling today.’ Today was good."
Johnny Cueto, SP8/20/2013 8:46:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Johnny Cueto (lat) will undergo an MRI Friday, according to MLB.com. "If it shows improvement, he may start throwing as well," Reds head trainer Paul Lessard said. "But it all depends. His strength numbers are better than they have been. His last scan [last Friday] still showed the strain was maybe 75 percent healed. We're hoping it's a little closer to zero before we start a throwing program."
Insight: Cueto has dealt with lat and oblique issues since the playoffs last year. After three trips to the disabled list in 2013 the team is taking it very slowly. There's a chance Cueto won't pitch again this season.
Tony Cingrani, SP8/20/2013 8:34:00 PM
Description: Reds rookie left-hander Tony Cingrani left Tuesday's start with a lower back strain, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.
Insight: At least he doesn't have anything wrong with his arm. We should have more information after the game.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF8/18/2013 6:44:00 PM
Description: Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo reached base in all five of his plate appearances Sunday, going 2-for-2 with three walks.
Insight: The outfielder has had a cold three weeks, hitting .197 since July 26. Most of his production came in April and July -- he batted .337 in April and .330 in July but has been a .240 hitter or worse in the other three months this season.
Homer Bailey, SP8/18/2013 6:39:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Homer Bailey limited the Brewers to three hits and one run over eight innings in a victory Sunday. He walked one and struck out eight.
Insight: Bailey has improved on most aspects of his game from his breakout 2012 season, including his K/9 (up 1.57) BB/9 (down 0.22) and HR/9 (down 0.25), but his 3.68 ERA is identical to last year.
Jay Bruce, RF8/17/2013 11:30:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce is a .406 hitter with a 1.145 OPS and two home runs in 32 at-bats against Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: The streaky Bruce is currently in a down cycle, batting .231 over the past two weeks, but this favorable matchup could get him going again. For the season he's batting .270 with 24 HR and 80 RBI.
Jay Bruce, RF8/16/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce is a .417 hitter with a 1.755 OPS and three home runs in 12 at-bats against Milwaukee starter Tom Gorzelanny.
Insight: The streaky Bruce is currently in a down cycle, batting .237 over the past two weeks, but this favorable matchup could get him going again. For the season he's batting .273 with 24 HR and 80 RBI.
Shin-Soo Choo, CFCold8/15/2013 4:21:00 PM
Description: Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo (hand) is in the lineup Thursday against the Brewers.
Insight: Choo missed Wednesday's game due to a hand issue. He's hitting .179 with a .612 OPS in August.
Ryan Ludwick, LF8/15/2013 10:42:00 AM
Description: Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick is 0-for-7 with three K in four games since returning from the DL and he is 3-for-21 (.143) with seven K against Brewers starter Kyle Lohse in their previous meetings.
Insight: Ludwick, who suffered a shoulder injury on Opening Day and missed more than four months, isn't likely to find his stroke Thursday versus Lohse.
Brandon Phillips, 2B8/15/2013 10:40:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is 7-for-28 (.250) with one extra-base hit and a .552 OPS against Brewers starter Kyle Lohse.
Insight: Phillips has a subpar .260 average and a .718 OPS this season, but he has driven in 90 runs as the team's regular cleanup hitter behind on-base machines Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto. We wouldn't trust him to produce against Lohse on Thursday, however.
Jay Bruce, RFCold8/15/2013 10:38:00 AM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce is a .310 hitter with a .941 OPS against Milwaukee's Kyle Lohse, Thursday's scheduled starter against the Reds.
Insight: Bruce is 9-for-29 with three doubles, a triple, a homer and six RBI against Lohse. He's only batting .205 in August, but a matchup with Lohse could get his bat going.
Bronson Arroyo, SP8/14/2013 7:24:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Bronson Arroyo was tremendous Wednesday in a win over the Cubs.
Insight: He tallied seven strikeouts over seven shutout frames. Arroyo's 3.35 ERA this season is his lowest since 2006.
Shin-Soo Choo, CF8/14/2013 12:50:00 PM
Description: Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Insight: Choo (.273, 78 runs, 15 HR, 37 RBI, 13 SB, .854 OPS) has struggled in August batting just .179 in his last 10 games.
Johnny Cueto, SP8/14/2013 10:51:00 AM
Description: Reds starter Johnny Cueto (lat), who was shut down in late June, still hasn't begun throwing.
Insight: Cueto has dealt with lat and oblique issues since the playoffs last year. After three trips to the disabled list in 2013 the team is taking it very slowly. There is no current timetable for his return.
Billy Hamilton, CF8/13/2013 8:22:00 PM
Description: Reds GM Walt Jocketty said the team hasn't decided if top prospect Billy Hamilton will be called up when the rosters expand on Sept. 1, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The team would need to add the outfielder to the 40-man roster if he's called up, and Jocketty said the Reds just don't have many available spots.
Insight: Hamilton hit .311 with a 113/86 K/BB and had a minor-league-record 155 steals last season in 132 games between High-A and Double-A. With Triple-A Louisville this season, he has hit .256 with a 94/34 K/BB and 69 steals in 106 games. If he's called up Sept. 1, it will only be for pinch-running purposes.
Brandon Phillips, 2B8/13/2013 11:03:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is just 3-for-23 (.130) against Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija.
Insight: Phillips' batting average is down this season (.260), but he's been asked to drive in runs and that's exactly what he's done with 89 in 109 games. Just not against Samardzija in an unfavorable matchup.
Mat Latos, SPHot8/12/2013 10:47:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati starter Mat Latos extended his shutout streak to 15 1/3 innings Monday against Chicago.
Insight: Latos is 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA in his past four outings. With Johnny Cueto out, Latos is the Reds' ace. Look for him to put together another strong performance Saturday against the Brewers.
Ryan Ludwick, LF8/12/2013 4:20:00 PM
Description: Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick, activated from the 60-day disabled list on Sunday, will make his first appearance since opening day.
Insight: Ludwick, who dislocated his shoulder, has zero official at-bats having walked twice before the injury in game No. 1 of the season. He hit 26 HR and knocked in 80 runs last season. He'll bat sixth and play left field.
Zack Cozart, SS8/12/2013 10:32:00 AM
Description: Reds shortstop Zack Cozart is 1-for-13 with six strikeouts against Cubs starter Travis Wood.
Insight: Cozart hasn't improved on his first full season and fantasy owners are largely ignoring his work this year. He's averaging just .240 with a .643 OPS and little speed. Avoid this matchup.
Todd Frazier, 3B8/12/2013 10:28:00 AM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is a career .500 hitter (6-for-12) with two home runs and a 1.533 OPS versus Cubs starter Travis Wood.
Insight: Frazier is batting just .232 with 10 homers and 49 RBI - well down from last year when he posted a .273 average with 19 HR and 67 RBI in just 128 games. This could be a rare matchup to take advantage of.
Ryan Ludwick, LF8/11/2013 8:10:00 PM
Description: After Sunday's win over the Padres, the Reds activated left fielder Ryan Ludwick from the 60-day disabled list.
Insight: Ludwick dislocated his shoulder on Opening Day and hasn't played since. Now that he's back, Chris Heisey will head back to the bench.
Mike Leake, SP8/11/2013 6:47:00 PM
Description: Reds righthander Mike Leake followed up his worst start of the year with a solid outing Sunday against the Padres.
Insight: Leake (10-5, 2.86 ERA) gave up two runs (one earned) in seven innings. The game went into extras so Leake had to settle for the no-decision. He's 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA in five post All-Star break starts.
Devin Mesoraco, C8/7/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is not in Wednesday afternoon's starting lineup versus Oakland.
Insight: No injury, just a planned day off. He's batting .250 with eight homers and 32 RBI this season while sharing time with Ryan Hanigan. Hanigan is injured, so Cokry Miller (.167) gets an opportunity to play.
Brandon Phillips, 2B8/7/2013 9:53:00 AM
Description: Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is just 1-for-10 against Oakland starter Bartolo Colon.
Insight: Phillips' batting average is down this season (.261), but he's been asked to drive in runs and that's exactly what he's done with 84 in 104 games. He should easily break his career mark of 98 (2009) before this season is over. But probably not against Colon.
Jonathan Broxton, RP8/7/2013 9:24:00 AM
Description: Reds setup man Jonathan Broxton (elbow) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list for Wednesday afternoon's game against Oakland.
Insight: Broxton (2-2, 4.33 ERA, 1.296 WHIP) had a strained flexor in his right elbow. He was expected to return in late June or early July, but ran a month behind schedule. His fantasy value is minimal.
Mat Latos, SP8/6/2013 10:17:00 PM
Description: Reds starter Mat Latos has fired three straight quality starts after failing to do that in the three starts before that.
Insight: Latos improved to 11-3 with a 3.21 ERA after tossing 7 1/3 scoreless four-hit frames Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics. The right-hander has gone 25-7 with a 3.37 ERA in 56 starts since joining the Reds prior to 2012.
Jay Bruce, RF8/6/2013 10:00:00 PM
Description: Cincinnati right fielder Jay Bruce hit his 23rd homer of the season Tuesday against Oakland.
Insight: Barring injury, Bruce will reach 30 home runs for the third straight season. He already has 157 in his career and is just 26 years old. While Bruce's K rate is up and his walk rate is down from last year, his average is also up 22 points due to a 56-point BABIP spike caused by a career-high 26.5 percent line-drive rate.
Todd Frazier, 3B8/3/2013 6:58:00 PM
Description: Reds third baseman Todd Frazier is not in Saturday's starting lineup.
Insight: Frazier hasn't had a hit in seven games and likely wasn't in your fantasy lineup anyway, but this makes it official. He's batting just .237 with 10 homers and 49 RBI - well down from last year when he posted a .273 average with 19 HR and 6 RBI in just 128 games.
