Matthews has been a major weapon in a San Diego passing attack that has ranked among the top teams in FCS in the past four years. He leads the nation in receptions per game, receiving yards per game, total receiving yards and touchdown catches. Matthews was second on the team in receptions in 2007 as a junior, with 47 catches for 1,088 yards and 16 TDs and was seventh nationally in receiving yards per game (99 yards). He was second to Ramses Barden of Cal Poly in yards per reception (23.2). He had 46 catches for 1,049 yards and 13 touchdowns. Matthews was an honorable mention Sports Network All-American last season and was named the Mid-Major second team in 2006-07. He has also been an effective kickoff returner with 16 returns for 387 yards (24.1) in his career.
