Final Score: Mississippi State 28, Kentucky 22
Starkville, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Jameon Lewis hauled in a touchdown, rushed for another, and also threw for a score to lead Mississippi State to a 28-22 victory over Kentucky on Thursday at Davis Wade Stadium.
Lewis caught seven passes for 53 yards and rushed for 22 yards on two carries while adding a 17-yard scoring strike to quarterback Dak Prescott, who finished 23-of-34 passing for 268 yards and two touchdowns.
Malcolm Johnson caught Prescott's other touchdown pass and finished with a game-high 79 receiving yards for the Bulldogs (4-3, 1-2 SEC), who have won consecutive games for the first time this season.
Maxwell Smith completed 18-of-34 passes for 160 yards and a score for the Wildcats (1-6, 0-4), who have lost five straight games.
Prescott put the Bulldogs on top less than four minutes in when he bought time in the pocket and rolled right before finding Johnson all alone down the field for a 60-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
Smith answered less than three minutes later, as he flipped a screen out to the right for Ryan Timmons, who sliced through the Mississippi State defense en route to a 51-yard score that made it 7-7 with 8:38 left in the first.
LaDarius Perkins broke free for 35 yards on the first play of the Bulldogs' ensuing drive before Lewis capped the 75-yard trek five plays later with a 19- yard TD run to give Mississippi State a 14-7 lead.
After Joe Mansour missed a 47-yard field goal early in the second, the Bulldogs extended their cushion midway through the frame with a 10-play sequence that Prescott extended with an 8-yard pickup on 4th-and-2 from the Kentucky 40.
Three plays later, Prescott found Lewis for a 17-yard touchdown that made it 21-7 with 6:14 left in the half.
Mansour connected on a 45-yard field goal late in the second to send the Wildcats into the break facing a 21-10 deficit.
Kentucky cut into the margin midway through the third when Bulldogs punter Devon Bell had a snap go through his hands and out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
The Wildcats ensuing possession started at the Kentucky 48 and five plays later, Jojo Kemp found room down the left sideline before extending the ball across the goal line for a 14-yard score that made it 21-19 with 4:19 left in the third.
Kentucky then tried an onside kick that the team recovered, but Daron Blaylock was whistled for offside to negate the recovery.
Mississippi State made Kentucky pay for the penalty, as the Bulldogs found the end zone shortly after to create some breathing room.
After a defensive pass interference call set Mississippi State up with a 1st- and-10 from the Kentucky 17, Lewis came in motion from the left side and took a handoff before stopping on a dime and throwing back to his left for Prescott, who hauled in the 17-yard score to make it 28-19 late in the third.
Mansour made a 44-yard field goal midway through the fourth to bring Kentucky within six, but Mississippi State chewed up over six minutes off the game clock on its ensuing possession.
However, on 4th-and-9 from the Kentucky 33, Prescott was sacked for a 9-yard loss, giving the Wildcats possession with 2:08 remaining.
Raymond Sanders kept Kentucky's final drive alive with a 6-yard pickup on 4th- and-1 from the Bulldogs' 49, but on 4th-and-7 four plays later, Smith threw incomplete over the middle to end Kentucky's comeback bid.
