Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Charles Ross rushed for 157 yards and an
important touchdown to lead the Rice Owls to a 23-14 win over the Kansas
Jayhawks in a non-conference bout at Rice Stadium.
Ross' rushing was key for Rice (1-1) as Taylor McHargue struggled by
completing just 14-of-31 pass attempts for 169 yards along with two
interceptions. Jordan Taylor caught five passes for 73 yards.
James Sims rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries for Kansas (1-1), which has lost
20-straight road games. Jake Heaps completed just 13-of-28 pass attempts for
157 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted twice. Tony Pierson hauled in
four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Both offenses struggled in the first quarter. However, Rice was able to put
points on the board when Michael Kutzler intercepted a pass from Heaps and
returned it 51 yards for a touchdown.

The offensive struggles continued for both teams but Rice was able to take a
13-7 lead at the break thanks to a pair of field goals from Chris Boswell.
Kansas took its first lead of the game late in the third quarter when Heaps
scored on a one-yard touchdown run.
Boswell put the Owls back ahead when he managed to split the uprights from 56-
yards out for a field goal.
An eight-yard touchdown run from Ross, with just over three minutes to play,
gave Rice a 23-14 cushion.
Kansas then failed to score on its final two possessions allowing the Owls to
pull out the victory.
