Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind a pair of 100-yard rushers, the Toledo
Rockets managed to outlast the Navy Midshipmen, 45-44 in double overtime, in
non-conference action at the Glass Bowl.
David Fluellen rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for Toledo (4-3) but left
the game with an apparent injury. Kareem Hunt stepped up in his absence,
turning 15 carries in 127 yards and two scores. Terrance Owens completed 11-
of-20 passes for 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Navy (3-3) racked up 419 rushing yards on the day, paced by Noah Copeland's
career-high 153 yards. Keenan Reynolds had 37 rushing yards and three
touchdowns while going 5-of-12 passing for 95 yards and a score.
Navy marched down the field on its first drive, going 75 yards on eight plays,
with Chris Swain capping off the possession with a two-yard touchdown rush.
After Jeremiah Detmer drilled a 47-yard field goal midway through the first
quarter for the Rockets, they were able to take their first lead of the game
early in the second quarter thanks to their defense. With Navy driving into
Toledo territory, Jayrone Elliott forced a Reynolds' fumble, picked it up and
returned it 68 yards for a touchdown.
The Midshipmen answered back in the final minute of the half when Reynolds
connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Copeland.
Toledo opened the second half with the ball and cashed in by retaking the lead
on 44-yard touchdown run by Fluellen. Navy regained the advantage on the
following possession, however, as Reynolds capped off a 10-play, 67-yard drive
with a one-yard rushing score.
The see saw continued later in the third quarter. The Rockets went up, 24-21,
following a 52-yard rushing touchdown by Hunt.
Hunt struck against early on the fourth quarter, ripping off a 16-yard
touchdown run to give the Rockets a 10-point lead with 12:10 to play.
The Midshipmen would not go down quietly, however. After starting a drive on
their own four-yard line, they orchestrated a 10-play possession that ended in
a Reynolds' three-yard touchdown rush to make their deficit just three with
under five minutes to play.
Navy was able to force a Toledo punt and got the ball back with just over four
minutes remaining in regulation. It converted a pair of crucial third downs on
the 14-play drive, which ended with a 40-yard field goal by Nick Sloan as time
expired to force overtime.
Toledo had the first possession in overtime and made the most of it with a
touchdown on a Damion Jones-Moore one-yard rush. Navy answered on its drive
with a one-yard touchdown run by Reynolds.
Navy scored a touchdown in the second overtime on a Geoffrey Whiteside six-
yard rush, but Sloan missed the PAT. The Rockets responded with a 20-yard
touchdown pass from Owens to Bernard Reedy, and a successful Detmer extra
point gave Toledo the win.
The teams combined for 740 rushing yards compared to only 200 passing yards.
Both teams converted on at least 50 percent of its third-down attempts, with
Navy going 4-of-5 on fourth down as well.
