NCAA Game Summary - Air Force at Navy|
(Saturday, October 5)
Final Score: Navy 28, Air Force 10
Annapolis, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - The government shutdown wasn't enough to
stop the Navy Midshipmen from defeating the Air Force Falcons, 28-10, as part
of the annual Commander-in-Chief's Trophy series at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial
Although the current stalemate in Washington put the game's status in
jeopardy, it was announced earlier in the week that the contest would go on as
scheduled since it received no government funding.
Keenan Reynolds rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns for Navy (3-1),
which avenged its Sept. 28 loss to Western Kentucky. Reynolds also completed
6-of-10 passes for 54 yards and went without a turnover.
For Air Force (1-5), which has lost five straight since opening the season
with a win over Colgate, Karson Roberts was just 6-of-14 for 67 yards and an
interception while adding 31 yards on the ground. Broam Hart led the Falcons
with 68 rushing yards on 18 carries. Nate Romine replaced Roberts under center
late in the game, going 1-of-2 for 15 yards while also throwing a pick.
Air Force scored the only points of the first quarter when Will Conant drilled
a 45-yard field goal midway through the frame to give the Falcons an early
Action remained quiet until the final five minutes of the first half. Reynolds
put Navy up 7-3 on a three-yard touchdown run, but Air Force responded with a
nine-play, 79-yard drive, capped off with an 18-yard touchdown rush by Anthony
LaCoste, as the Falcons went into intermission with a 10-7 advantage.
The Midshipmen opened the second half strong and went back ahead following a
38-yard touchdown run by Demond Brown at the 12:09 mark of the third quarter.
Air Force drove into Navy territory early in the fourth quarter, but Hart was
stuffed for no gain on a 4th-and-2 to give the ball back to the Midshipmen.
The home team responded by piecing together an 11-play, 66-yard drive,
finished off by a two-yard touchdown run by Reynolds.
Navy put the game out of reach with under five minutes remaining on Reynolds'
third rushing score of the afternoon, this time from 10 yards out.
The Falcons turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions in the
fourth quarter, coughing up a fumble and tossing a pair of interceptions. The
miscues proved to be the difference as the teams were otherwise well matched.
Navy amassed 327 yards, while Air Force put up 313 yards.
