New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Jeff Scott ran for two touchdowns and the
Ole Miss Rebels pitched a 39-0 shutout win over Tulane at the Mercedes-Benz
Thanks to a strong effort by their defense, the Rebels (3-1) have already
surpassed last season's win total under first-year head coach Hugh Freeze. It
also marked the team's first shutout win since 2008.
The Green Wave (0-3), who are guided by first-year head coach Curtis Johnson,
lost their 13th game in a row dating back to last season, which is currently
the longest losing streak in the nation. Freshman quarterback Devin Powell
made his first career start and was sacked three times and threw three
Ole Miss jumped out to a 26-0 first-quarter lead and was never threatened the
rest of the way. Scott got the Rebels on the board on their second play from
scrimmage, scoring on a 13-yard run following a Tulane fumble on its opening
Ja-Mes Logan added a 14-yard touchdown run midway through the opening frame,
and Randall Mackey scored on a 28-yard scamper at the 3:04 mark. Donte
Moncrief rounded out the Rebels' first-quarter scoring barrage with a 23-yard
TD grab from Bo Wallace with 1:24 to play in the period.
Scott notched his second touchdown of the day on a four-yard run midway
through the third quarter. Ole Miss kicker Bryson Rose capped the scoring with
field goals of 40 and 47 yards.
The Rebels defense held Tulane to 159 yards of total offense, including a mere
14 net yards on the ground. On the other side of the ball, Ole Miss racked up
304 yards and four TDs on the ground (5.7 ypc) despite not having a single
player eclipse 70 rushing yards.
