Troy, AL (Sports Network) - Derek Thompson completed 31-of-38 passes for 331
yards and two touchdowns, leading North Texas to its first road win of the
year, as the Mean Green bested Troy 38-33 in Sun Belt Conference action at
Veterans Memorial Stadium.
North Texas (4-6, 3-3 Sun Belt) amassed a season-best 503 yards of total
offense. Chris Bynes had a career day with 134 receiving yards and a touchdown
on seven receptions. Ivan Delgado also had an impressive performance with nine
catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. James Hamilton provided balance on the
ground, with 105 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
Corey Robinson led Troy (2-7, 1-4) by completing 27-of-39 passes for 267 yards
and four touchdowns. Shawn Southward contributed 84 rushing yards on 16
carries to lead the Trojans' rushing attack. Eric Thomas chipped in 70 yards
receiving and two touchdowns on just three catches. Kanorris David led Troy's
defense with 11 tackles.
North Texas opened scoring at the 8:16 mark of the opening quarter when
Thompson ran 15 yards for a touchdown.
Robinson countered with a TD run of his own to tie the score four minutes
later from four yards out.
The Mean Green added three in the final seconds of the quarter with a 21-yard
field goal by Zach Olen.
North Texas extended its lead to 10 at the 10:17 mark of the second quarter
when James Hamilton dashed 52 yards for a touchdown.
Robinson answered with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Thomas four minutes later,
then threw a five-yard scoring pass to B.J. Chitty to give Troy a 21-17
advantage with 2:35 left in the half.
The Mean Green took back the lead in the final minute of the half when
Thompson connected with Delgado on a 28-yard scoring play that put North Texas
up 24-21 as the game reached intermission.
The only score of the third quarter came courtesy of a 33-yard touchdown pass
from Robinson to Thomas. Kicker Michael Taylor's unsuccessful extra point
attempt kept Troy's lead at 27-24 heading into the final frame.
Thompson gave the Mean Green the lead back with 13:24 remaining in the contest
with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Bynes. A fumble returned the ball to
North Texas deep in Troy's territory which led to a six-yard touchdown run by
Hamilton that put the Mean Green up 38-27 with just over 13 minutes left to
Troy narrowed the margin with just under eight remaining when Robinson
completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Felton Payton. The Trojans attempted a
two-point conversion but failed and North Texas's lead stood at 38-33.
The Mean Green offense sealed the victory by running the clock down to just
fifteen seconds before returning the ball back to the Trojans.
North Texas's 503 yards of total offense is especially impressive considering
its top offensive weapon Lance Dunbar was held to just 38 yards on 11 carries.
Troy amassed 383 yards of total offense in the contest.
Troy is now on a five-game losing streak, its longest since 1982.
