Denton, TX (Sports Network) - The North Texas Mean Green, fueled by an
explosive offensive performance, made light work of the ULM Warhawks in Sun
Belt Conference play at Apogee Stadium, 38-21.
The Mean Green (3-5, 2-2 Sun Belt) racked up 459 yards of total offense to win
their second straight game and even up their conference mark.
North Texas quarterback Derek Thompson posted the best numbers of his career,
completing 23-of-39 passes, for 332 yards and three TDs. Wideouts Brelan
Chancellor and Christopher Bynes had productive outings, with Chancellor
finishing with five catches, for 113 yards and one TD, while Bynes hauled in
eight balls, for 85 yards and two scores. Star tailback Lance Dunbar provided
balance for the Mean Green with 139 yards and one touchdown on the ground. it
was Dunbar's 20th career 100-yard performance, just one behind Patrick Cobbs
for most in school history. Dunbar, who had 50 receiving yards in the win as
well, became just the 25ht player in NCAA history to amass 3,000 career
rushing yards and 1,000 career receiving yards.
ULM (2-5, 1-2) lost for the fourth time in the last five games, as quarterback
Kolton Browning was just 15-of-32 passing, for 195 yards in the setback. Brent
Leonard was his top target, grabbing eight balls, for 113 yards.
Luther Ambrose got the Warhawks off to a fast start, taking the opening
kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown to spot ULM an early 7-0 lead. In the
process, Ambrose became the school's all-time leader in kickoff return yardage
at 2,126 yards.
North Texas tied things up at the 6:22 mark of the first quarter, on a 40-yard
Thompson to Chancellor touchdown pass.
ULM took the lead again towards the end of the first quarter, as Centarius
Donald scored on a 15-yard run to make it 14-7 for the Warhawks.
The Mean Green provided the only scoring of the second quarter, tying the game
at 14-14, as Thompson connected with Bynes on a nine-yard TD strike, capping
off a 12-play, 71-yard drive.
Thompson and Bynes hooked up again in the third quarter, this time from 13
yards out to give North Texas its first lead of the game at 21-14.
ULM tied the game up once again just over a minute later on an eight-yard
touchdown run by Jyruss Edwards.
North Texas took the lead for good at the end of the third, 24-21 courtesy of
a 46-yard field goal by Zach Olen.
The fourth quarter belonged to the hometown Mean Green, which extended their
lead to 31-21 with a 16-yard fumble return for the TD by Julian Herron. Dunbar
iced the game for North Texas with a 60-yard TD run by Dunbar with just under
three minutes to play in the game, putting the team up 38-21.
