Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Derek Thompson threw for 201 yards and three
touchdowns as the North Texas Mean Green held on to defeat the Indiana
Hoosiers, 24-21, in non-conference action at Apogee Stadium.
Thompson converted just 10-of-20 passes for the Mean Green (1-3) as they
picked up their first win of the season. Lance Dunbar had a huge game for the
hosts as he not only ran for 127 yards on 24 carries but also caught seven
passes for another 152 yards and a score in the triumph.
The Hoosiers (1-3) were paced by Dusty Kiel who stepped in and converted 7-
of-12 passes for 145 yards and a couple of late touchdowns in the setback.
Following a scoreless first quarter the Mean Green began a streak of 24
straight points as Thompson hooked up with Dunbar on an 83-yard scoring
strike. Thompson then connected with Chris Bynes on a 17-yard scoring pass,
followed by a 32-yard TD pass play between Thompson and Michael Outlaw to make
the score 21-0 at the break.
In the third quarter kicker Zach Olen knocked through a 40-yard field goal to
extend the lead to 24-0.
Finally, in the fourth quarter, the Hoosiers began to put forth a charge as
Mark Murphy intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to cut
the deficit to 24-7.
Kiel tossed touchdown passes of 44 and 67 yards to Cody Latimer and Kofi
Hughes, respectively, in the final minutes but it was too little, too late as
the visitors bowed in the three-point decision.
Indiana, which produced 404 yards of total offense, converted just 5-of-17 on
third down on the night.
