(Saturday, October 29th)

Final Score: Notre Dame 56, Navy 14

South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Jonas Gray ran for three touchdowns, Notre Dame scoring seven times on the ground overall, as the Fighting Irish logged a convincing 56-14 win over the Navy Midshipmen at Notre Dame Stadium.

Gray carried the ball 12 times for 69 yards for the Irish (5-3) as they captured their fifth win in the last six outings. Cierre Wood carried the ball 11 times and scored twice as he gained 66 yards for Notre Dame, while quarterback Tommy Rees connected on 16-of-22 passes for 237 yards, one score and one interception.

The Midshipmen (2-6) were paced by Trey Miller who connected on 5-of-13 passes for 33 yards and a score, the squad rolling up 196 yards and a TD on the ground as they dropped their sixth in a row after opening the 2011 campaign with consecutive wins over Delaware and Western Kentucky.

Notre Dame scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter as Gray and Wood reached the end zone on runs of four and one yards, respectively.

Less than four minutes into the second quarter the academy hit the end zone when Miller hooked up with Gee Gee Greene on a nine-yard scoring pass, cutting the deficit to 14-7.

From there the hosts rattled off 35 straight points, starting with a 56-yard TD pass from Rees to a wide open Michael Floyd who split the defense and then actually had to wait for the pass to arrive before sprinting into the clear. Floyd finished the day with six catches for 121 yards.

Gray scored on a two-yard TD run, Wood a one-yard effort with 3:37 remaining in the first half which game Notre Dame a 35-7 edge at the break.

The only points of the third quarter came courtesy of Floyd who took a handoff this time for a 10-yard TD run. Early in the fourth it was Gray again, this time on a five-yard scoring run, making the score 49-7.

Backup quarterback Jarvis Cummings appeared for Navy and turned a 12-yard run into a touchdown for the visitors at the 9:25 mark of the fourth quarter.

On the ensuing drive, one that consumed more than five and a half minutes, George Atkinson III crossed the goal line from a yard out for the Irish, capping the afternoon's scoring explosion.

In two games against service academies this season (Navy and Air Force), Notre Dame has generated a 115-47 scoring advantage.
