NCAA Game Summary - East Carolina at Navy|
(Saturday, October 22nd)
Final Score: East Carolina 38, Navy 35
Annapolis, MD (Sports Network) - Navy kicker Jon Teague's 42-yard field goal
attempt as time expired bounced off the right upright as the East Carolina
Pirates held on for a 38-35 win against the Midshipmen in non-conference
action at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
After failing behind by three points with just over two minutes remaining in
regulation, the Midshipmen (2-5) moved the ball 47 yards on 11 plays, but on
fourth down and the clock winding down Teague's opportunity to send the
game into overtime missed the mark.
Leading the way for the Pirates (3-4) was quarterback Dominique Davis who
converted all but five of his 45 passes attempts for 372 yards and two
touchdowns. Along the way Davis set a pair of NCAA records as he converted his
first 26 passes on the afternoon, breaking the single-game record of 23 in a
row set by Tee Martin of Tennessee (1998) and Aaron Rodgers of California
(2004). By hitting on 10 straight attempts to close out the meeting with
Memphis last week, Davis set the mark for overall, consecutive pass
completions with 36, snapping the mark set by Rodgers.
Also having a huge game for East Carolina was running back Reggie Bullock who
registered a game-high 104 yards and scored three times for the visitors.
Navy was paced by Trey Miller who connected on 5-of-12 passes for 126 yards
and two touchdowns, while Kriss Proctor converted two of his three attempts
for a mere 10 yards.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Navy's Gee Gee Greene put the home team
on the scoreboard with a 13-yard TD run.
On the ensuing possession ECU countered with an eight-play, 78-yard drive
which culminated with a three-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Lance Lewis.
The Pirates then piled on with a 10-yard TD pass play between Davis and
Michael Bowman, followed by a 35-yard field goal from Mike Barbour at the end
of the first half to give the visitors a 17-7 edge at the break.
Navy opened the second half by returning the opening kickoff back for a
touchdown, Marcus Thomas being credited with a 90-yard run to cut the deficit
On their first possession of the third quarter, the Pirates responded with a
touchdown of their own, thanks to a one-yard scoring run by Bullock to make
the score 24-14.
Near the end of the period Navy mounted a 13-play, 73-yard drive which ate up
more than five and a half minutes on the clock and ended with a one-yard TD
run by Alex Teich.
Bullock put ECU back up by double digits early in the fourth quarter when he
raced 13 yards into the end zone to give the Pirates a 31-21 edge.
Less than two and a half minutes later the Midshipmen were back on the
offensive as Miller locked up with Brandon Turner for a 59-yard TD pass play
to again cut the ECU lead to just three points.
Navy assumed the lead midway through the period on a 37-yard TD pass from
Miller to Matt Aiken, giving the hometown crowd something to cheer about with
a 35-31 advantage.
At the 2:14 mark of the final frame Bullock crossed the goal line for the
third time on the afternoon, his three-yard effort pushing the Pirates back
out front to stay at 38-35.
Navy, which managed to produce 420 yards of offense, while giving up 504,
stayed close despite converting just 3-of-11 on third down.
