Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Gary Nova completed 23-of-31 passes for 271
yards with two touchdowns to lead Rutgers to a 21-20 victory over Navy at High
Point Solutions Stadium.
Rutgers (5-1) also received a solid performance from Jawan Jamison, who rushed
for 101 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, and Mohamed Sanu led the Scarlet
Knights with 100 receiving yards on ten receptions.
Navy (2-4) welcomed Alex Teich back to the lineup after the starting fullback
was suspended for last week's contest against Southern Mississippi. Teich led
the team in rushing with 69 yards on 18 carries in his return, while
quarterback Kriss Proctor ran for another 39 yards and a touchdown. Proctor
completed five-of-12 passes for 106 yards, but also threw two costly
After a scoreless first quarter, Rutgers delivered the first points of the
contest when Jamison rushed one yard for a touchdown in the first minute of
the second frame to give the Scarlet Knights a 7-0 lead.
Navy evened the score at seven with 8:35 remaining in the second quarter when
Chris Ferguson intercepted a Nova pass and took it back 16 yards for a
score. With four minutes remaining in the opening half, Proctor broke away for
a 54-yard run to give the Midshipmen a 14-7 lead that served as the
Navy added to its advantage just less than five minutes into the third with
a 31-yard field goal by Jon Teague to push the lead to 17-7. Rutgers cut into
the margin when Nova connected with Quron Pratt on a 10-yard touchdown pass
that made it 17-14 with 3:07 left in the third quarter.
Rutgers reclaimed the lead early in the final quarter with a 20-yard touchdown
pass from Nova to Tim Wright, which gave the Scarlet Knights a 21-17 advantage
with 12:57 remaining.
Teague brought the Midshipmen closer with a 41-yard field goal with 7:52 left
in the game that reduced Rutgers' lead to one. With 6:46 remaining, Teague
lined up for a 34-yard field goal to put Navy ahead, but the try was
blocked by Brandon Jones which sealed the 21-20 victory for Rutgers.
Rutgers posted 423 total yards to Navy's 305. Rutgers has won four straight,
while Navy has dropped its last four.
