Final Score: Southern Miss 63, Navy 35

Annapolis, MD (Sports Network) - Austin Davis was nearly perfect in a high scoring affair at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, completing 21-of-23 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns to lead Southern Miss to a 63-35 victory over Navy.

Davis also ran for 75 yards and a touchdown for Southern Miss (5-1), and Jeremy Hester added 118 yards rushing and a touchdown on a day when the Golden Eagles ammassed 584 yards of total offense.

Navy (2-3) was without its leading rusher Alexander Teich, who was suspended earlier this week by head coach Ken Niumatalolo due to a violation of team rules.

With Teich absent, quarterback Kriss Proctor served as Navy's main offensive weapon. Proctor rushed for 123 yards on 17 carries, and completed five-of-10 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns for the Midshipmen. Delvin Diggs added 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

The Southern Miss special teams produced the first score of the day when it blocked Jon Teague's 29-yard field goal attempt. Marquese Wheaton returned the block 79 yards to give the visitors a 7-0 lead at the 9:20 mark of the opening quarter.

The Golden Eagles extended its lead when Hester scored from three yards out to put Southern Miss up 14-0 with 1:56 remaining in the opening frame.

Southern Miss took full control of the game in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles took a commanding 28-0 lead after a pair of scores, including a four- yard touchdown run by Tracy Lampley and a five-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Ryan Hanks.

Navy scored its only points of the first half on a John Howell one-yard rushing touchdown, which cut the deficit to 28-7 with under six minutes remaining in the first half.

Davis threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Balentine in the final minute of the second quarter. His second touchdown pass of the game put Southern Miss up 35-7 heading into halftime.

Southern Miss and Navy exchanged blows in a high scoring third quarter. The Midshipmen came out with energy and forced Southern Miss into a quick three-and-out to start the half.

Then the Navy offense quickly scored, as Proctor completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Turner to cut the deficit to 35-14 with just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter.

Davis quieted the Navy comeback by dashing for 35-yards on a crucial third-and one before throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Bolden to finish off the drive.

Navy's triple-option offense later added its second touchdown of the quarter when Diggs punched it in from one-yard out to cut the Southern Miss lead to 42-21.

The Golden Eagles turned to trickery on their next possession as wide receiver Quentin Pierce threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Collin Jarbo to balloon the lead to four touchdowns.

Navy answered, as Proctor completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Gee Gee Greene that cut the Southern Miss lead to 49-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Navy scored its final touchdown when Diggs ran seven yards for a score with 10:13 remaining. Southern Miss added to its total on a pair of touchdown runs in the final quarter. Lampley ran five yards for a touchdown and Davis plunged in for a touchdown from one-yard out to finalize the score at 63-35.

Southern Miss has now won four straight, while Navy now has lost three straight games.
