Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Tim Cornett rushed for three touchdowns and
caught another one to lead the UNLV Rebels to a 42-16 victory over the Wyoming
Cowboys in a Mountain West Conference tussle at Sam Boyd Stadium.
Cornett rushed for 70 yards in the win for UNLV (2-8, 2-4 MWC), while Omar
Clayton threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns.
Alvester Alexander rushed for 92 yards and one touchdown for Wyoming (2-9,
0-7), while Austyn Carta-Samuels finished with just 108 yards and one
interception on 13-of-22 passing.
The Cowboys scored on their first player from scrimmage, as Alexander broke
free and dashed down field for a 72-yard touchdown run.
UNLV responded instantly, however, as Cornett scored on a seven-yard run.
It took just one play for Wyoming to score its second touchdown, as David
Leonard connected with T.J. Smith for a 32-yard touchdown in the final seconds
of the first quarter. However, Ian Watts missed the extra point, leaving the
Pokes with a 13-7 edge.
Cornett gave the Rebels a 14-13 advantage early in the second stanza when he
scored on a three-yard run.
UNLV closed out the first half with a 21-13 lead when Clayton found Phillip
Payne for a 21-yard scoring strike, capping off a 13-play, 85-yard drive.
The Rebels pushed their lead to 28-13 early in the third quarter when Cornett
found the end zone for a third time, this score going for just one-yard.
Watts nailed a 46-yard field goal to bring the Cowboys within 12 points midway
through the third frame.
UNLV pulled away in the final stanza when Clayton hit Marcus Sullivan for a
41-yard scoring strike.
The Rebels continued to rack up the points in the final frame, as the team
capped off a 12-play, 67-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Clayton
