(Saturday, October 2nd)

Final Score: SMU 42, Rice 31

Houston, TX (Sports Network) -Kyle Padron threw for 371 yards and three touchdowns to lead the SMU Mustangs to a 42-31 victory over the Rice Owls in Conference-USA play at Rice Stadium.

Aldrick Robinson hauled in two of Padron's touchdown passes and finished with 148 yards on six receptions. Cole Beasley led SMU (3-2, 2-0 C-USA) with 158 yards on eight catches.

Rice (1-4, 0-1) relied on its ground attack, as Sam McGuffie rumbled for 96 yards and one score on 20 carries. Nick Fanuzzi did threw for 276 yards in the loss, but was intercepted twice.

The lone touchdown in the opening frame came from Sterling Moore, who returned an interception 32 yards to give the Mustangs an early 7-0 edge.

A 42-yard field goal by Chris Boswell midway through the second stanza put Rice on the scoreboard.

However, the Mustangs went into the break with a 14-3 advantage after Padron hit Robinson for a 23-yard scoring strike in the final seconds of the first half.

The Owls scored their first touchdown of the game early in the third frame, but the score was produced by the special teams unit.

The first drive of the second half for Rice stalled, so the team punted, but a hard tackle by Chris Jones jarred the ball loose. The ball was recovered in the end zone by Phillip Gaines, cutting Rice's deficit to 14-10.

SMU responded with two straight touchdowns, beginning with a five-yard touchdown pass from Padron to Robinson.

SMU's special teams took care of the next touchdown, as Ja'Gared Davis returned a blocked field goal 77 yards, extending the Mustangs lead to 28-10.

Rice cut its deficit to 28-17 early in the final quarter when Charles Ross plunged into the end zone from the one-yard line.

However, the Mustangs followed the Rice score with two straight touchdowns of their own, as Zach Line rumbled into the end zone on a three-yard run.

Line's touchdown was followed by a seven-yard scoring strike from Padron to Patrick Fleming less than two minutes later, extending SMU's lead to 42-17.

The Owls would continue to fight however, as McGuffie and Jeremy Eddington both scored on one yard touchdown runs to bring the Owls within 11 points, but Rice was unable to complete the comeback, eventually falling to its league opponent.
