El Paso, TX (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for 327 yards and three
touchdowns, as the Texas-El Paso Miners downed the Rice Owls, 44-24, in
Conference USA action at the Sun Bowl.
Vittatoe completed 19-of-32 pass attempts for UTEP (5-1, 2-1 C-USA), which
extended its winning streak to four games. Kris Adams was his main target with
five catches for 134 yards and three scores, while Pierce Hunter also had five
receptions for 105 yards.
Nick Fanuzzi passed for 201 yards and three touchdowns on 23-of-38 tosses, as
Rice (1-5, 0-2) suffered its fourth loss in a row.
Rice started the scoring with a four-yard touchdown pass from Fanuzzi to Vance
McDonald midway through the opening quarter.
The Miners responded moments later with a two-yard touchdown run by Leilyon
Myers. A safety then gave UTEP the lead after one quarter of play.
Vittatoe and Adams hooked up on scoring strikes of 26 and 18 yards,
respectively, to push UTEP's lead to 23-7 late in the second quarter.
Chris Boswell hit a 28-yard field goal for Rice with 36 seconds left, but the
Miners countered with a two-yard run from Myers with eight ticks remaining
before the half.
The lone score of the third quarter came on a 73-yard scoring strike from
Vittatoe to Adams.
McDonald scored on a seven-yard strike from Fanuzzi early in the fourth
quarter, but the Miners received a one-yard touchdown run from Jason Williams
moments later for a 44-17 advantage.
The Owls put up the final score with 52 seconds left, as Fanuzzi connected
with Trevor Gillette from 12 yards out.
