Boca Raton, FL (Sports Network) - James Hamilton rushed 122 yards, including the decisive score midway through the final quarter, to lift the North Texas Mean Green past the Florida Atlantic Owls, 21-17, in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both schools.

Hamilton made the most of his 11 carries for North Texas (1-3, 1-0 SBC), which rushed for 257 yards as a team. QB Riley Dodge added 67 yards on the ground, while passing for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-15 pass attempts. The Mean Green snapped a seven-game losing streak that dated back to last season.

Jeff Van Camp paced FAU (1-2, 0-1) with 273 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-31 pass attempts. Rob Housler grabbed four balls for 94 yards and a score, as the Owls suffered their first loss in seven meetings against North Texas.

The Owls kicked off the scoring with one-yard touchdown run from Alfred Morris just under six minutes into the game.

The Mean Green knotted things up with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Dodge to Darius Carey late in the first period.

A 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter put FAU back on top until Carey hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Riley with 54 seconds left before the intermission.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the Mean Green extended its lead to 21-10 courtesy of a 32-yard touchdown run by Hamilton.

The Owls responded immediately with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Van Camp to Housler, but they would get no closer in the four-point loss.

North Texas possessed the ball for over 36 minutes behind its ground attack that averaged 4.8 yards per carry on 54 attempts.
