Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Geno Smith threw for 220 yards and three
touchdowns to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers to a 49-10 victory over the
UNLV Rebels in a non-conference bout at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Brad Starks hauled in all three touchdown passes for WVU (4-1), while
finishing the game with 100 yards on four receptions. Noel Devine led the
ground game with 84 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries.
Caleb Herring threw for 101 yards and one touchdown for UNLV (1-5), which has
lost two straight contests. Omar Clayton also saw time under center, and
finished with just 79 yards on 12-of-18 passing. Clayton threw one
interception and was sacked twice.
The Mountaineers scored early and often in the opening quarter, placing UNLV
in a big hole.
West Virginia's first score came less than two minutes in the quarter, as
Smith connected with Starks for a 38-yard scoring strike.
The Mountaineers pushed their lead to 21-0 thanks to a 28-yard touchdown run
by Devine, and a 10-yard touchdown scamper by Jock Sanders.
West Virginia continued its dominance in the second quarter, as Devine found
the end zone for a second time, this score coming on a 48-yard scamper.
Smith extended WVU's advantage to 35-0 when he connected with Starks for
a 48-yard scoring strike in the final seconds of the first half.
Midway through the third quarter Smith and Starks hooked up again, this time
on a four-yard pass and catch, which extended WVU's lead to 42-0.
UNLV finally got on the scoreboard late in the third stanza when Nolan Kohorst
connected on a 39-yard field goal.
The Rebels continued to chip away early in the final frame when Herring hit
Tim Cornett for a six-yard touchdown pass.
However, the Mountaineers put this game away when Matt Lindawood plunged into
the end zone on a one-yard run. The score gave West Virginia a 39-point lead
that the team would not relinquish.
