The Mountaineers scored early and often in the opening quarter, placing UNLV in a big hole.

West Virginia's first score came less than two minutes in the quarter, as Smith connected with Starks for a 38-yard scoring strike.

The Mountaineers pushed their lead to 21-0 thanks to a 28-yard touchdown run by Devine, and a 10-yard touchdown scamper by Jock Sanders.

West Virginia continued its dominance in the second quarter, as Devine found the end zone for a second time, this score coming on a 48-yard scamper.

Smith extended WVU's advantage to 35-0 when he connected with Starks for a 48-yard scoring strike in the final seconds of the first half.

Midway through the third quarter Smith and Starks hooked up again, this time on a four-yard pass and catch, which extended WVU's lead to 42-0.

UNLV finally got on the scoreboard late in the third stanza when Nolan Kohorst connected on a 39-yard field goal.

The Rebels continued to chip away early in the final frame when Herring hit Tim Cornett for a six-yard touchdown pass.

However, the Mountaineers put this game away when Matt Lindawood plunged into the end zone on a one-yard run. The score gave West Virginia a 39-point lead that the team would not relinquish.
