"Real big win for us tonight, it was huge," said Miami head coach Randy
Shannon. "We're taking the next step in the Atlantic Coast Conference, playing
North Carolina really was a big victory for myself and this whole University.
You watch the game defensively, they came out of the gate and we gave up a
big, long run, which is inexcusable, but the guys responded back."
T.J. Yates was 12-for-21 with 140 yards and two interceptions, while Johnny
White had 85 yards on eight carries with a touchdown for the Tar Heels (4-3,
2-2), who had won four straight coming into the contest.
"I thought that one of the most significant factors in the ballgame was we
never ever really got a real good handle on the running game," said North
Carolina head coach Butch Davis. "They were able to really kind of keep us off
balance with the run and the play action pass. They played well and I thought
our kids got off to a good start."
The Tar Heels got on the board on their first touch of the game as Casey
Barth's 19-yard field goal capped a 10-play, 78-yard drive for a 3-0 lead with

The Hurricanes answered with a drive that spanned the first and second as Matt
Bosher's 38-yard field goal tied the game less than a minute into the second

Miami came back down the field and moved 48 yards, but the drive stalled at
the UNC 17 and a 34-yard field goal from Bosher made it a 10-6 game with 10
1/2 minutes left in the first half.
After holding North Carolina to a three-and-out, Miami took the ball 55 yards
in nine plays and took a 13-10 lead when Harris tossed a six-yard score to
The Hurricanes extended their lead on their first touch of the second half as

from Harris for a 19-10 lead as the extra point was missed.
