Clemson, SC (Sports Network) - The Clemson Tigers defeated the North Texas
Mean Green, 35-10, behind 122 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Andre
Ellington in a non-conference showdown at Memorial Stadium.
Jamie Harper also contributed a 100-yard game, rushing for 102 yards and one
touchdown en route to the victory for Clemson (1-0). Quarterback Kyle Parker
threw 170 yards and two touchdowns on 9-of-17 passing.
Nathan Tune threw for 240 yards and one touchdown in the loss for North Texas
(0-1), but also committed two interceptions. The Mean Green's rushing attack
was led by Lance Dunbar, who netted 116 yards on 23 carries.
Clemson jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage just 16 seconds into the affair,
Ellington took off for a 60-yard touchdown on the Tigers' second play from
The offense remained into the second quarter until Clemson hit paydirt with
yet another big play, as Parker connected with Brandon Clear for a 70-yard
touchdown to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.
North Texas answered back shortly after Tune hit Darius Carey for 13-yard
touchdown, bringing the Mean Green to within seven, 14-7.
Clemson countered before North Texas could blink, taking advantage of
excellent field position after a solid return and an unsportsmanlike penalty
on the Mean Green during the kickoff. After connecting with Dwayne Allen for
24 yards, the Parker hit Harper for an eight-yard score to give the Tigers a
21-7 advantage at the intermission.
The score remained the same until late in the third quarter when the Tigers
struck on a 14-yard touchdown dash by Ellington.
North Texas was able to answer back early in the final quarter with a 25-yard
field goal from Trent Deans, bringing the game to 28-10.
That was all the Mean Green could muster on this opening weekend of the
college football season, as Clemson came right back with a touchdown score on
its next drive. The Tigers ran seven plays in just over three minutes, capped
with a three-yard rushing touchdown from Harper. Clemson held the 35-10 until
