Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Grant Rohach threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns as the Iowa State Cyclones blanked the Kansas Jayhawks, 34-0, in Big 12 Conference action at Jack Trice Stadium.
Rohach completed 15-of-20 passes and also had an interception for Iowa State (2-9, 1-7 Big Ten), which won its first league game of the year and snapped a seven-game losing streak. Shontrelle Johnson turned 13 carries into 84 yards and a touchdown, while Justin Coleman paced all receivers with eight catches and 78 yards.
For Kansas (3-8, 1-7), neither Jake Heaps (7-of-19, 72 yards) nor Montrell Cozart (4-of-12, 20 yards, INT) impressed under center. James Sims rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries for his fourth 100-yard performance of the season.
After both teams started the game with empty possessions, Iowa State got on the board with 6:43 left in the first quarter when Rohach connected with Aaron Wimberly on a 58-yard touchdown.
The Cyclones pieced together a 13-play, 91-yard drive late in the first and into the second quarter, but after stalling in the red zone they had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Cole Netten. Kansas had an opportunity to cut into its 10-0 deficit late in the first half but Cozart threw an interception in Iowa State territory with under two minutes left before halftime.
Iowa State further extended its advantage early in the third quarter on another short field goal by Netten (21). Rohach added another touchdown pass later in the frame, a 15-yard strike to Quenton Bundrage, to make it a 20- point game.
James White rushed in a five-yard touchdown later in the third quarter as the Cyclones' lead swelled even further.
The Cyclones put a stamp on the victory in the fourth quarter when Johnson rushed in his score from 23 yards out.
Iowa State outgained Kansas in the dominant victory, 502-279. The Jayhawks converted just 3-of-16 third-down attempts on the evening.
