CFL Game Summary - Calgary at Saskatchewan
(Saturday, August 25th)
Final Score: Calgary 17, Saskatchewan 10
Regina, SK (Sports Network) - Kevin Glenn threw two first-quarter touchdown passes, as the Calgary Stampeders survived a late Saskatchewan rally and held on for a 17-10 victory in a game played under blustery conditions at Mosaic Stadium.
Glenn finished with 171 yards, and Jon Cornish totaled 159 yards on 24 carries for the Stampeders (4-4), who extended their winning streak over the Roughriders to seven games.
"It was very pleasing to know you can run the football when you have to," Stampeders coach John Hufnagel said. "We were able to do that a majority of the game."
Darian Durant threw for 179 yards with an interception for Saskatchewan, which has dropped five in a row after starting the season 3-0. The slide began with an overtime loss at Calgary on July 19.
Down 17-0, the Roughriders' offense came to life in the fourth quarter, producing 10 points on consecutive series. Sandro DeAngelis kicked a 37-yard field goal and a 30-yard reception by Chris Getzlaf set up Kory Sheets' 3-yard TD run.
Saskatchewan got the ball back with 2:25 remaining, but the Calgary defense forced a 2-and-out. The Stampeders then converted a critical 3rd-and-inches to run off more of the clock.
When Durant took the field again, only seven seconds remained and his final pass was knocked down.
The Stampeders wasted little time getting on the board, scoring touchdowns on each of their first two possessions. They opened the game by marching to the Saskatchewan 34-yard line and Glenn finished off the opening drive with a touchdown pass along the far sideline to Joe West.
"It was perfect. He put the pass right there. It couldn't be drawn up any prettier," West said.
Glenn and the rest of the Calgary offense went right back to work after Saskatchewan was forced to punt in Stampeders' territory. Cornish ran for 32 yards before Glenn found Romby Bryant over the middle on a crossing route for a 14-yard touchdown.
The Roughriders came away with no points on their next drive when DeAngelis pushed a 48-yard field goal attempt wide right. A tipped ball was intercepted by defensive end Charleston Hughes, derailing another Saskatchewan series late in the second quarter.
Rene Paredes, who missed a field goal after the turnover, connected on a 34- yarder in the third quarter, stretching Calgary's lead to 17-0.
"We can't start a game like that and expect to win," Saskatchewan defensive tackle Keith Shologan said. "We didn't start strong, and that was the worst problem."
The Roughriders haven't beaten Calgary since September 17, 2010 ... Glenn completed 15-of-24 passes, while Durant connected on 17-of-29 throws ... Sheets rushed for 74 yards on 11 carries ... Getzlaf had six receptions for 86 yards.
