Grey Cup rematch highlights CFL's opening weekend
Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - A rematch of last year's Grey Cup between Hamilton and Saskatchewan will highlight the opening weekend of the Canadian Football League's 2014 season.
The league revealed its schedule for the campaign on Wednesday and the season will kick off June 26 with Winnipeg hosting Toronto. A pair of games will take place two days later, as Montreal visits Calgary and Edmonton travels to British Columbia.
Saskatchewan will then conclude the opening weekend on June 29 with a visit from Hamilton. The teams met in the Grey Cup last November, also in Regina, with the Roughriders claiming a 45-23 victory for their fourth CFL title.
The league's newest team, the Ottawa RedBlacks, will debut in Week 2 on July 3 at Winnipeg. The first home game for the RedBlacks will take place two weeks later on July 18 against Toronto.
Because of the nine-team league, the schedule will feature a few quirks.
Each team will have two byes during the season, with the exception of Toronto. The Argonauts will have three idle weeks, but will also play twice within a five-day span in Week 8. Toronto, after a bye in Week 7, will host Winnipeg on Aug. 12 and will welcome British Columbia on Aug. 17.
Hamilton will open a new stadium on July 26 when the RedBlacks visit Tim Hortons Field. The Tiger-Cats played their home games last year in Guelph while their new building was under construction.
Labour Day weekend traditions continue in Week 10 when Saskatchewan hosts Winnipeg and Edmonton visits Calgary. Also that weekend, Ottawa will travel to Montreal and Hamilton will host Toronto.
The 20-week season concludes Nov. 7-8, with the division semifinals on Nov. 16 and the division finals on Nov. 23. The 102nd Grey Cup will take place Nov. 30 at BC Place in Vancouver.
