GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Miners of Texas-El Paso is set for Sunday afternoon in Orlando, as the teams aim to pick up at least one victory before exiting the Old Spice Classic.

Since opening the 2012-13 campaign with a 69-49 win over Oral Roberts at home, the Miners have hit the skids, losing three straight. Defeats versus Arizona and Oklahoma were compounded by a disappointing 69-48 setback versus Clemson in the previous round of this event on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Commodores have traveled a similar road with their season- opening victory against Nicholls State being followed by three straight defeats. The latest in the string of disappointing efforts came against Marist on Friday in an awkward 50-33 final. It was the team's lowest point total since it bowed to Mississippi State, 33-31, back in 1982.

Vanderbilt fell behind the Red Foxes immediately on Friday and never recovered, the team making just six field goals in the first half and shooting a miserable 23.0 percent from the floor, including 2-of-20 behind the three- point line. There wasn't a single double-digit scorer to be found for Vandy, with James Siakam coming the closest with his eight points, to go along with eight rebounds, in a reserve role. The starting five for the program combined to shoot only 9-of-46 from the floor. Leading scorer Kedren Johnson (17.8 ppg), ended the meeting a mere 2-of-11 from the floor, missing all five of his three-point attempts, finishing with four points, although he did account for eight rebounds and three of the four assists the team logged in the outing. The other double-digit scorer on the season for the Commodores is Kyle Fuller who is responsible for 12.5 ppg, although his 4-of-16 shooting on the outside is in need of some attention. Then again, the team as a whole is shooting only 28.2 percent from three-point range so it is not just an isolated incident.

UTEP never had much of a chance to compete against the Clemson Tigers on Friday, as the Miners shot only 38.1 percent from the floor in the first half and compounded matters by converting a mere 7-of-13 at the free-throw line. Overall, UTEP hit on just 37.0 percent from the floor and 11-of-21 at the charity stripe, all while allowing the Tigers to convert 52.3 percent from the field and a staggering 12-of-16 behind the three-point line. John Bohannon was the top scorer for the Miners with his 15 points, adding a team-high six rebounds as well to offset his four turnovers, while Julian Washburn tacked on another 11 points in the setback. Julian Washburn is responsible for a team- best 11.0 ppg over the course of the first three games, although his mere 32.7 percent shooting from the floor and 1-of-7 effort on the perimeter has been sorely lacking of course. Bohannon accounts for 10.0 ppg for a team generating just 57.2 ppg and averaging just over three made three-point field goals per outing.

After the ugly display against Marist on Friday, the Commodores have to show some signs of life in this contest, so expect them to rise to the occasion against Clemson.
