GAMES NOTES: The College of Charleston Cougars will try to earn their third straight win when they play host for the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Southern Conference clash at TD Arena Wednesday night.

Things have not been going well for Appalachian State which has lost three of its last four games after a 79-56 loss to Davidson this past Saturday. The setback dropped the Mountaineers to 8-11 overall and even their conference record at 4-4. Heading out on the road is a perilous proposition for the Mountaineers who are just 2-8 away from Boone this season. Appalachian State will return home to face Western Carolina on Saturday.

A convincing 79-50 victory over Wofford gave Charleston back-to-back wins on the heels of a two-game slide. At 14-7 overall the Cougars are one of just three teams in the SoCon to have eclipsed the 10-win plateau already. In fact their 14 totals wins is the most in the league. Charleston is still just fourth in the standings though with a mark of 6-3 against league competition. Charleston has fought to just a 7-5 record at home where the Cougars will be on Saturday against UNC Greensboro.

Charleston will be looking for a bit of revenge against Appalachian State after Mountaineers sent the Cougars to an early exit in the SoCon Tournament last year. Overall the Cougars still have the edge in the all-time series, 17-12.

The Mountaineers were atrocious from the offensive end in the first half against Davidson as they managed to shoot just 21.5 percent from the field. In the second half they improved to 40 percent but it was not nearly enough. The Mountaineers were subject to a 41-29 deficit on the boards and a 24-9 deficit from 3-point range in the loss.

The 56 points that Appalachian State managed against Davidson continued an alarming trend for the Mountaineers. On the season Appalachian State has excelled on the offensive end, ranking third in the SoCon in scoring (71.6 ppg). However the Mountaineers are just eighth in field goal percentage (.425). That erratic shooting has caught up with them recently as they have failed to reach 70 points in three straight games. Nathan Healy (14.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Jay Canty (14.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg) have been pillars on the inside, anchoring the squad both in scoring and on the boards. Tabarris Hamilton (10.7 ppg) adds some scoring punch, while Tevin Baskin (10.2 ppg) provides spark off the bench as he showed with his 18-point effort against Davidson.

Charleston shot an impressive 59.2 percent from the field against Wofford and held the Terriers to just five field goals in the first half and 33.3 percent shooting overall. The Cougars were on fire in the second half when they hit 70 percent of their shots and 9-of-12 from 3-point range to coast to the victory.

Unlike Appalachian State, Charleston hasn't been prolific in scoring, though the Cougars have been efficient. They score just 64.3 points per game but lead the SoCon in field goal percentage (.445). Despite the low scoring the Cougars have managed to put together twice as many wins as losses by holding teams to 61.3 points per game on 40.5 percent shooting when they get back on defense. Andrew Lawrence (13.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.2 apg) is the team's leading scorer and distributor. The 6-foot-1 guard is actually second in the league in assists despite seeing his numbers drop from last season. Anthony Stitt (11.0 ppg, 3.0 apg) is another solid scorer and passer in the backcourt. Adjehi Baru (9.9 ppg, 8.6 rpg) anchors the team in the paint.

The shooting woes for Appalachian State aren't likely to improve against the Cougars who have been staunch defenders this season. Expect Charleston to keep the win streak going.
