GAME NOTES: Matching up against yet another premier team from the West Coast Conference, the San Francisco Dons prepare for the arrival of the Saint Mary's Gaels to War Memorial Gym.

Over the weekend, the Dons gave it their all, but still came up short against nationally-ranked Gonzaga on the road, 66-52. The setback snapped a modest two-game win streak for USF, which is now just 2-6 in conference and in seventh place in the WCC standings as a result.

Meanwhile, the Gaels continue to press on with their march toward the top of the league standings, sitting behind only Gonzaga which entered the week with a perfect 6-0 mark. Saint Mary's last took the floor on Saturday when it topped Pepperdine at home, 84-72, in order to remain perfect at McKeon Pavilion through 12 games.

The Dons put up a fight in the first meeting of the season between these two a few weeks back, but still bowed in a 78-72 final on the road. Nevertheless, USF leads the all-time series between the squads, 103-71, dating back to the 1947-48 campaign.

Beau Levesque came off the bench to score 19 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Gaels delivered the 12-point home win against Pepperdine last Saturday. Stephen Holt added 17 points, Brad Waldow had 13 and Mitchell Young 12 points to go with six rebounds and a couple of steals. Although he shot just 3-of-9 from the floor, Matthew Dellavedova finished with a double-double consisting of 10 points and a game-high 10 assists for the home team. Already the program's all-time leader in assists, Dellavedova not only has 144 dishes through 21 starts this season, but he is also the top man in the scoring column as well with 16.3 ppg. Both Holt and Levesque have benefited from having the star guard feed them the ball, resulting in 12.7 and 10.8 ppg, respectively.

Trailing by 22 points at the break on Saturday at Gonzaga, the Dons did themselves proud as they fought back in the second half and only lost by 14 points in a very hostile environment. The team did fail to have a single player reach double figures, with Chris Adams coming the closest with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting behind the 3-point line in 18 minutes of action. The squad registered only six offensive rebounds, 3-of-8 shooting at the free- throw line, and ended up with almost as many turnovers (17) as it had field goals (20). As a team, the Dons are shooting just under 45 percent from the floor this season, resulting in 68.3 ppg, which is just a shade under what the team has been allowing (68.8 ppg) over 21 games. Cole Dickerson is both first in scoring (14.2 ppg) and first on the glass (9.8 rpg).

Even though the Dons showed some spunk in not giving up against Gonzaga, trying to take down the Gaels is just as difficult, not matter where the game is being played.
