GAME NOTES: With both teams needing wins, the Austin Peay Governors travel to Martin to take on the Tennessee Martin Skyhawks in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown.
Austin Peay enters the game having lost seven straight, including back-to-back two-point defeats. The Governors opened their Ohio Valley Conference schedule on Thursday night at Southeast Missouri, losing 86-84. In that game, Austin Peay was led by Travis Betran, who tallied a career-high 30 points, while draining six 3-pointers. Will Triggs was right behind with 29 points on 14- for-17 shooting, finishing off a double-double with 11 rebounds. Anthony Campbell chipped in with 11 points in the setback.
The Skyhawks are coming off a hard-fought 73-62 home loss to defending OVC champion Murray State on Thursday. Mike Liabo (12 points), Myles Taylor (11) and Terence Smith (10) each cracked double figures in the scoring column for UTM, who forced Murray State into 19 turnovers and outscored the Racers by a 43-40 margin in the second half.
This is the 92nd meeting between the two Ohio Valley Conference foes, Austin Peay and UT Martin, with the Govs holding a decisive 67-24 advantage. The Governors swept last seasons two meetings and have won the last six games in the series.
APSU leads the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage (.417), blocks (5.3 per game) and assists (15.5 per game). The Govs are scoring 71.1 points per outing but giving up 75.1. Three players are averaging double figures, led by Betran with 15.9 points per game, followed by Campbell with 15.1 and Triggs with 10.4
Sophomore forward Myles Taylor leads UTM in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per game, along with 7.3 rebounds per contest. He also is shooting a healthy 82.5 percent at the free throw line. Though normally the sixth man, career 1000- point scorer Mike Liabo is averaging 12.9 points per game. Guard Terrence Smith played in his third game since returning from a broken ankle and scored 10 points against Murray State.
Both teams are struggling for wins right now. Austin Peay has a more balanced attack and has owned the Skyhawks in recent history. Look for that trend to continue Saturday night.
