GAME NOTES: The San Jose State Spartans will try once again to secure their first victory of the 2012-13 season, when they play host to the Weber State Wildcats on Thursday night at The Event Center.

Weber State hits the road for the first of three straight games, and the team is 1-0 on the young season afer blasting NAIA foe Arizona Christian, 110-52, last Friday. It was the second-largest margin of victory in program history. The Wildcats will play at Utah State next followed by a visit to Dayton, and they will begin Big Sky Conference play at Eastern Washington on Dec. 20.

San Jose State has lost its first two games of the season, albeit by a combined margin of only six points. First, it was a 72-68 setback at New Orleans, and most recently a 77-75 heartbreaker at home versus Houston. This is the middle game of the team's current three-game home stand, and SJSU will open Western Athletic Conference action on Dec. 29 at Texas State.

The all-time series between these two clubs is knotted at 2-2, and Weber State won the most recent encounter in double-overtime last season, 91-89.

The Wildcats had seven players score in double figures in their season-opening win over Arizona Christian, led by Davion Berry's 17 points. Weber State shot a sizzling 63.9 percent from the field while holding its overmatched opponent to a mere 26.5 percent, which included a woeful 5-of-24 effort from three- point land. Conversely, the 'Cats nailed 13 treys, while claiming decided advantages in points from the foul line (19-11) and rebounding (50-29). The two teams combined for 34 turnovers, and double-doubles were recorded by both Joel Bolomboy (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Frank Otis (13 points, 10 boards).

D.J. Brown scored 24 points and James Kinney logged a double-double consisting of 19 points and 10 rebounds, but those efforts went for naught as San Jose State dropped a 77-75 decision to Houston earlier this week. The Spartans shot just 40.9 percent from the field, while the Cougars were slightly better at 45.9 percent. In the season opener against New Orleans, it was Kinney who was high man for the club with his 23 points, while LaVanne Pennington added 13 points in 23 minutes of action off the bench. SJSU shot 51.8 percent from the field in that contest, despite going just 3-of-11 from downtown. The Spartans committed 20 turnovers in the game, but UNO was guilty of 18 and made only one of its seven three-point tries.

The Spartans will get off the schneid at some point, and what better time than at home against a foe that isn't exactly a world beater at the moment.
