GAME NOTES: A five-game homestand draws to a close for Hawaii on Tuesday night, as the Warriors entertain North Dakota in non-conference action at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Warriors are off to a solid start to the 2012-13 campaign as they won their first three outings all by double figures, the first time that's happened since 2001-02. On Friday, the team came close to running its win streak to four in a row to kick off the new season, but after going to overtime against visiting Illinois, the hosts bowed to the Fighting Illini in a 78-77 final.

Even though the school used to be known by a similar name to that of the Warriors and Fighting Illini, North Dakota has decided to go without a nickname for the time being. The program has won one of its first three games of the season, an 87-51 thrashing of Crown College, but other than that the Big Sky Conference member has clashed with a couple of other recognizable opponents and come up far short.

On Saturday, the team was thumped by Northern Iowa on the road at the McLeod Center in a 72-47 final.

North Dakota claimed a 70-53 win in the only previous meeting between these two teams back in 1949 in Kansas City during the National Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament.

Against the Panthers over the weekend, North Dakota shot just 32.7 percent from the floor, including a mere seven made field goals in the second half, as it bowed to UNI in Cedar Falls. The lone double-digit scorer for the visitors was Aaron Anderson who tallied 12 points while shooting just 1-of-5 behind the three-point line and 4-of-13 from the field overall. Lenny Antwi and Alonzo Traylor both tallied nine points for the program as it was beaten on the glass, 41-28, and also managed to hit only 5-of-22 shots behind the three- point line. Missing in action since he scored 12 points against Kansas State in the opener is Troy Huff who is still listed as doubtful due to a concussion. With Huff on the bench, the squad turns to Anderson who is averaging 12.0 ppg over the course of three outings, although he has shot a miserable 25.7 percent from the floor and 3-of-16 (.188) out on the perimeter thus far.

Vander Joaquim, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Warriors in both departments, knocked down a game-tying shot at the end of regulation versus Illinois, but the hosts were unable to take down the Illini as they fell for the first time this season. Brandon Spearman added 20 points and nine rebounds, followed by Christian Standhardinger and Hauns Brereton with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jace Tavita scored only three points, but he did manage to hand out seven assists in an effort to offset his five turnovers. Since returning to the starting lineup, Joaquim has averaged a double-double and now his numbers are up to 17.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg overall. As good as he can be in the paint, at least after four games the one knock on Joaquim is the fact that he has nine turnovers and just one assist in more than 100 minutes of action. Picking up the slack in that department is Tavita who has 34 dishes in four starts.

With Huff out of action, North Dakota is at even more of a disadvantage as it travels to Honolulu. Maybe the visitors will make things interesting, but Hawaii is just too strong on the inside right now.
