GAME NOTES: Two familiar foes will clash at Charles Koch Arena, as the Wichita State Shockers put their unblemished record on the line against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa opened the season with three straight wins, but has dropped two of its last three games, including a disturbing 57-41 loss at home to Stephen F. Austin last weekend.
Meanwhile, Wichita State has yet to taste defeat, pushing their 2012-13 record to 6-0 with an impressive 75-63 victory over a Big Ten opponent in Iowa last week to capture the Cancun Challenge title, the team's first in-season tournament crown outside of the state of Kansas since 1963.
This marks the 122nd all-time meeting in this series. The Shockers hold the slimmest of margins, 61-60, winning the last matchup 77-67 at Tulsa a season ago.
The Golden Hurricane lost to Stephen F. Austin 57-41 as only James Woodard (14 points, eight rebounds, three assists) was able to score in double figures. The team shot just 31.0 percent from the field, including a poor 21.4 percent from 3-point range. The team turned the ball over 18 times, which led to 14 points for the opposition.
Woodard has led the team in scoring thus far with 17.2 ppg and 5.8 rpg. Rashad Smith has added 14.5 ppg, with Scottie Haralson contributing 10.3 ppg. Both Woodard and Smith have shot efficiently, with Woodard knocking down 54.7 percent from the floor and Smith shooting an even better 62.1 percent. The team has had good balance, as the Tulsa averages 75.3 ppg, while holding opponents to 62.7 ppg. The Golden Hurricane have outrebounded teams by a +7 margin thus far.
Wichita State looked impressive in the 12-point win over Iowa in Cancun, as Cleanthony Early recorded 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. The Shockers held Iowa to just 26.1 percent shooting from the floor, while shooting 41.8 percent themselves.
Early has been very important with his play off the bench as he leads the team in scoring (14.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg). Carl Hall (13.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg) has averaged similar stats and is the only other player averaging in double figures. The Shockers are another squad which has played well at both ends of the floor, averaging 70.3 ppg on 42.9 percent shooting, while holding opponents to a mere 57.7 ppg and 35.9 percent shooting. They have outrebounded their opponents by over seven rebounds per game (+7.5 rebounding margin).
Both teams have played well early on, but with the Shockers have tons of momentum and it should carry over in this one at home.
