GAME NOTES: The Richmond Spiders have never lost their Atlantic 10 road opener under current head coach Chris Mooney. They'll have a tall task on Saturday afternoon against a La Salle team that boasts the leading scorer in the conference.
Richmond is 7-0 under Mooney in conference road starters. That includes a pair of triumphs over the Explorers at Tom Gola Arena, in triple-overtime on Jan. 9, 2008, and 87-68 on Jan. 8, 2011. The Spiders had won four in a row against La Salle, including the regular-season meeting at the Robins Center last year, but the Explorers won in the first round of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Spiders have won back-to-back contests on the heels of a three-game skid. On Wednesday, Darien Brothers scored 15 points for Richmond in a 64-61 home win over Rhode Island. Brothers was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Greg Robbins and Deion Taylor added 11 points each while Robbins also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
With junior forward Derrick Williams out the next four weeks due to a sprained ankle, the Spiders will look to a pair of freshmen as replacements. Against Rhode Island, Deion Taylor scored a career-high in points and Alonzo Nelson- Ododa had six points, six boards, five blocks and three assists. Brothers, who leads the nation in 3-point percentage (.536), paces the Spiders with 15.6 ppg. Williams (13.6 ppg) is second in scoring, but is first in rebounding (6.8 rpg). Kendall Anthony (13.4 ppg) is the other double-digit scorer on a team that is 15th in the nation in 3-point percentage (.390).
The Explorers have won six in a row at Tom Gola Arena since faltering against Central Connecticut State on Nov. 18. Overall, La Salle had won four of its previous five contests until losing the A-10 opener at Charlotte on Wednesday, 74-65. Ramon Galloway posted 23 points and nine rebounds on a poor 7-of-29 shooting performance for the Explorers. Tyreek Duren contributed 12 points, five assists and three steals, while Jerrell Wright just missed a double- double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Galloway leads the A-10 in scoring at 18.1 ppg, while Duren is averaging 15.1 points and Tyrone Garland 13.9 points. Jerrell Wright (10.7) is the other double-digit scorer. Duren needs 17 points to become the 51st Explorer to reach 1,000 for his career. Steve Zack has been a big contributor inside of late. The sophomore center is 19-of-31 (.613) from the field in his past five games and is averaging 8.0 ppg in that span.
La Salle has won 21 of its last 25 at Gola Arena, and should be able to ride a bounce-back effort from Galloway to another home triumph.
