GAME NOTES: The Dayton Flyers and Colorado Buffaloes are set to square off in the first game of the Charleston Classic at TD Arena.

The Charleston Classic is an eight-team tournament hosted by the College of Charleston. The team that comes out on top in this one will advance to face the winner of the Baylor/Boston College matchup.

Dayton began its season with a 74-61 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday. The Flyers made 52.8 percent of their field goal attempts and 8-of-16 from three-point range in their opener. They also limited ASU to just 39.3 percent shooting. Coach Archie Miller's squad is very good in preseason tournaments. Dayton has won two in-season tournaments over the past four seasons. UD has an impressive 16-7 record versus opponents from BCS conferences over the past five seasons.

Colorado is eyeing a return to the Big Dance this season after last season's Pac 12 Conference Tournament Championship run. Coach Tad Boyle has a young team, but it appeared to be full of seasoned veterans in its season opening 74-59 win over Wofford. The Buffaloes' aggressive style of play was evident as they attempted 36 free throws against the Terriers.

The series is tied at 1-1. The last time Dayton played the Buffaloes was in Colorado, losing 77-59 on Jan. 10, 1987.

The Flyers have a true talent in point guard Kevin Dillard. The 6-0 guard was the team's leading scorer (13.3 ppg) a year ago but he still exemplified unselfishness by averaging six assists per game. The All-Atlantic-10 Preseason First Team selection finished with 12 points and 10 assists in the team's opener. While Dillard drives the lane and draws defenders, junior guard Vee Sanford is spotting up on the perimeter. Sandford shot 60 percent from beyond the arc last season and scored a team-best 18 points against Arkansas State. Josh Benson returned from an ACL injury that kept him sidelined for much of his junior year to produce 14 points and eight rebounds his last time out.

Many expected Andre Roberson to be the leader of Colorado this season after his breakout performance in last year's postseason. However, his seven points were the least of any starter in the team's opener. Roberson did manage to stuff his stat line by grabbing seven boards, record three steals, and block two shots in the win. Josh Scott went 10-of-11 at the charity stripe to score 14 points. Spencer Dinwiddie was the most impressive talent with 13 points, four assists, and two blocks. Xavier Johnson provides a spark off the bench with his energetic style of play.

This one could go either way. Dillard appeared to have help in Dayton's opener, now it is time for the Flyers' supporting cast to prove it was not a fluke. The Buffaloes have a more talented and deeper team, but they will have trouble with the disciplined Flyers.
