GAME NOTES: The Georgia Southern Eagles and Maryland Terrapins are set to square off in a non-conference matchup Saturday night at the Comcast Center.
Georgia Southern is seeking a third straight win after taking down Kennesaw State on the road, 62-46 on Wednesday. It marked the Eagles' first non- conference road victory since Dec. 2, 2006 against Winston-Salem State. Following this tilt, they'll return home to open their Southern Conference schedule against Elon on Wednesday night.
Maryland has won three straight since a narrow season-opening loss to defending national champion Kentucky. Most recently, the Terrapins defeated Lafayette on Tuesday, 83-74. Tonight's contest wraps up the team's four-game homestand.
This will be the first-ever meeting between these two schools.
GSU knocked down 8-of-19 3-pointers (.421) against Kennesaw State and won the rebounding battle, 31-24. Junior Eric Ferguson led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Cleon Roberts chipped in with 10 points. Ferguson is already closing in on the 1,000-point mark for his career (894 points) He is averaging a team-best 13.8 points and 8.0 rebounds through four games, and he also paces the squad with seven blocks and seven steals. Roberts has been awfully impressive in his first four games on the college scene, averaging 13.5 points while shooting 56.7 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-15). Roberts has scored in double figures in all four games, while Tre Bussey rounds out the team's double-digit scorers with 10.0 ppg.
Sophomore Alex Len leads Maryland with 17.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per tilt. He has scored in double figures in all four games and has recorded 12 of the team's 24 blocked shots, as Maryland paces the ACC with 6.0 blocks per game. Len is also shooting a team-best 55.3 percent from the floor for the Terps, who have outscored their opponents by an average margin of 11.3 points and are +13 in rebounding margin. Defensively, they have limited foes to 39.1-percent shooting from the floor. Dez Wells, James Padgett and Nick Faust are all averaging 10.5 points, while point guard Pe'Shon Howard is averaging an ACC-best 7.8 assists per game and has a 3.9 assist-to-turnover ratio. Against Lafayette on Tuesday night, Len paced five Terps in double figures with 16 points to go along with eight rebounds as the team shot a healthy 51.8 percent from the floor despite knocking down only 3-of-15 3- pointers.
The Eagles are off to a solid start, even notching a rare non-league road victory. However, they are no match for the Terrapins in this one. Look for Maryland to ride another balanced attack to a sizeable victory at home.
