GAME NOTES: The Rhode Island Rams take aim at their second win of the season, as they play host to the George Mason Patriots at the Ryan Center in Kingston on Wednesday.
The Patriots didn't look great their last time out but still came out with the win over Boston University in the final seconds, 48-45. It marked the team's fourth victory on the season and the third in the last four games.
Rhode Island is coming off their first win of the season, topping Auburn 78-72 in double overtime. The victory was a long time coming for first-year head coach Dan Hurley. as the Rams dropped their first five games to start the 2012-13 season.
The first meeting between these teams came last year when the Patriots won 92-90 in an overtime thriller.
George Mason defeated the Terriers in an ugly game, thanks to a 3-point play by Bryon Allen with .2 seconds remaining in regulation. There wasn't much offense to speak of in the game for either team. George Mason was led in the scoring column by Johnny Williams, who posted 10 points in the win.
The Patriots are 4-2 early on this season with defense being the key, as they have held opponents to a mere 57.0 ppg. They have force opposing teams into 94 turnovers and have held them to just 37.5 shooting from the field and 35.8 percent from beyond the arc. George Mason has been led by Sherrod Wright in scoring department, with 15.0 ppg. Wright has shot the ball well over the first six games, delivering on 50.8 percent from the field. Williams is the only other player averaging in double figures for the Patriots with 10.2 ppg. George Mason has averaged a modest 60.3 ppg, but it is its defensive tenacity thus far that has led to victories.
The Rams beat the Tigers 78-72 in double overtime thanks to an impressive performance by Xavier Munford, who poured in 33 points, knocking down eight 3- pointers, including one in each overtime period. He was joined in double figures by Andre Malone, who scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Nikola Malesevic, who finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and three steals off the bench.
Rhode Island offense has been sporadic this season. leading to a less than desirable 1-5 record thus far. Munford has done his best, averaging 17.0 ppg. Malone follows in the scoring column with 11.2 ppg. Neither player has shot the ball all that well, as Munford has converted 35.8 percent from the field with Malone shooting 39.0 percent. The team has averaged an anemic 58.3 ppg, while shooting 37.0 percent from the floor and 31.7 percent from 3-point range.
With Rhode Island's offensive play being less than impressive, it looks as through the Patriots and their stingy defense will thrive in this one.
