Final Score: Auburn 74, South Carolina 71
Columbia, SC (Sports Network) - Frankie Sullivan scored 17 points to lead the Auburn Tigers to a 74-71 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks in a Southeastern Conference tussle at Colonial Life Arena.
Rob Chubb recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (8-7, 2-0 SEC), winners of three straight. Brian Greene, Jr. chipped in with 14 points as he shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the perimeter.
Bruce Ellington registered a season-high 18 points for the Gamecocks (10-5, 0-2), who were hoping to eclipse last season's win total under new coach Frank Martin. Damien Leonard added 17 points and nine boards off the bench, while Lakeem Jackson and Eric Smith scored 10 apiece in the loss.
Auburn shot a sizzling 60 percent from the floor in the opening frame, but the Gamecocks held a key 16-7 edge in points off turnovers to claim a slim 39-38 halftime lead.
The Tigers continued to shoot well in the second stanza (.571), although South Carolina managed to stay within striking distance. Ellington tied the score at 71-71 on a jumper with just over three minutes to play. However, the Gamecocks were held scoreless the rest of the way, as Ellington and teammate Brian Richardson both missed potential game-tying threes in the final seconds.
The game featured 13 ties and 27 lead changes as the teams traded blows from start to finish, but it was the Tigers who came up with the key buckets late in regulation.
