(Monday, November 19th)

Final Score: Butler 72, Marquette 71

Maui, HI (Sports Network) - Rotnei Clarke hit a three-pointer as time expired, handing Butler a 72-71 decision over Marquette in first-round action at the Maui Invitational.

Khyle Marshall led the way with a game-high 24 points to go with nine rebounds and Clarke contributed 20 for the Bulldogs (2-1), who will next face No. 9 North Carolina on Tuesday. The Tar Heels routed Mississippi State, 95-49, in their opener.

Roosevelt Jones added 12 points with four assists in the victory.

Vander Blue netted 21 points for the Golden Eagles (2-1), who will take on Mississippi State in a loser's bracket matchup. Junior Cadougan totaled 14 points and Davante Gardner posted 12 with seven rebounds in defeat.

Cadougan had just hit two free throws with eight seconds on the clock to give Marquette a 71-69 edge, when Clarke dribbled past midcourt, shifted to the right side and heaved a shot towards the basket as the clock ran out, which banked in off the backboard.

The Golden Eagles led 14-5 early on, but the Bulldogs remained close throughout the first half until finally going ahead 31-29 on a Marshall slam. It was a one-point margin for Butler at the break.

Trent Lockett's layup with 6:36 to play saw Marquette ahead 57-51, and a Blue trey made it 67-62 with 2:01 to go. Marshall's slam and a three-point play by Andrew Smith tied the game, then Jake Thomas' three-point play gave the Golden Eagles a 70-67 lead with 30 seconds remaining.

Erik Fromm's bucket pulled Butler within a point.
