GAME NOTES: Having already clinched the Southern Conference North Division title, the Elon Phoenix aim to continue their hot streak as they travel to Chattanooga to take on the Mocs.
Elon has won four in a row and 11 of its last 12 contests. Included in that stretch is an 85-61 home win over the Mocs on Jan. 24. Jack Isenbarger scored a game-high 23 points and connected on six 3-pointers in the second half to spark the Phoenix to victory. Isenbarger reached the 1,000-point milestone in that contest.
On Thursday, Ryley Beaumont recorded a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Phoenix over the Samford Bulldogs, 63-62. Beaumont scored the go-ahead basket on a backdoor cut with 8.2 seconds remaining.
The only setback for the Phoenix over the last 1 1/2 months was a Feb. 7 loss at Wofford. Other than that, Elon has been rolling. The team's 19 wins are the most since the program made the move to the Division I ranks and most since the 1989-90 season.
The driving force of the Phoenix has been the defense. Elon is limiting teams to 40.7 percent shooting, which is the top defensive mark in the Southern Conference. Lucas Troutman leads the team with 14.9 points, while Isenbarger (13.9) and Beaumont (11.4) also average double figures. Beaumont (6.9 rpg) is the leader on the boards.
The Mocs will try to break a two-game slide. They fell, 94-68, at home against UNC Greensboro on Thursday. Z. Mason scored 21 points with eight rebounds. Gee McGhee scored 13 points and Ronrico White added 12. Chattanooga leads the SoCon in rebounds per game (38.3), but UTC is ninth in the league in free throw percentage (.670).
McGhee has scored 12 or more in nine consecutive contests. He is second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg), just behind Mason (14.8 ppg), who leads the squad in rebounding (7.3 rpg). White (9.6 ppg) and Drazen Zlovaric (8.5 ppg) are also in the starting lineup. The Mocs are shooting just 40.9 percent from the field, which is second-to-last in the conference. They're firing at 29.6 percent from beyond the arc, which is last in the SoCon.
The Mocs have won six of the past seven home meetings with the Phoenix, but Elon has been the superior team this season and judging from the result of the first encounter, this one should have pretty much the same outcome.
