GAME NOTES: The Elon Phoenix welcome the Chattanooga Mocs to Alumni Gym for a Southern Conference matchup.
Chattanooga has lost two of its last three outings to fall to 8-11 overall and .500 in conference play. The Mocs split a two-game homestand last week, as they notched a 91-88 win over Appalachian State a week ago and then fell to Western Carolina on Saturday, 90-81. Tonight's contest begins a three-game road trip.
Meanwhile, Elon is hoping to close out a perfect 3-0 homestand. The Phoenix opened with a 73-59 win over Furman last Thursday and then followed it up with a 68-61 triumph over Wofford on Saturday. Another victory here would certainly come in handy before the team hits the road for four of its next five.
Chattanooga owns a slim 11-9 edge in the all-time series between these two squads.
The Mocs put forth a poor defensive effort in their last outing, as they allowed Western Carolina to shoot 53.4 percent from the floor and knock down 12-of-22 3-pointers. WCU used a 14-4 spurt early in the second half to turn a six-point margin into a 16-point lead, and the Mocs were never able to recover. Z. Mason paced UTC with 21 points and six rebounds in the loss, while freshman Gee McGhee finished with 19 points. McGhee has been a welcome addition this season, as he is averaging a team-best 29.2 minutes while scoring in double figures (10.1 ppg). Mason leads the Mocs with 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per tilt. Chattanooga was shooting just 38.2 percent from the floor through its first 10 games, but the team has picked things up over the last nine contests, shooting a collective 44 percent. UTC entered the week as the SoCon leader in rebounding margin (+4.6)
Elon tops the conference in field-goal percentage defense (.405), turnover margin (+3.6), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2) and 3-pointers made per game (7.7). Lucas Troutman leads the way with 15.3 ppg to go along with an average of 5.8 rebounds. Jack Isenbarger has knocked down a team-high 47 threes (.353) and is second on the team with 14.0 ppg, while leading rebounder Ryley Beaumont rounds out the double-figure scorers (10.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg). The Phoenix found themselves in a tight battle on Saturday night, but they overcame a late three-point deficit by closing out the game on a 13-3 run. Isenbarger led the way with 17 points and six rebounds, followed by Troutman with 16 points and six boards. Tanner Samson also finished in double figures with 10 points. Defensively, Elon held Wofford to 37.3-percent shooting for the game.
The Phoenix are playing well on their current homestand, and they have a favorable matchup here against a Chattanooga squad that is struggling defensively.
