COACHING CHANGES TRANSACTIONS POWER POLL DEPTH CHARTS CURRENT ODDS
NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Phoenix
(Saturday, October 19th)
Final Score: Phoenix 5, Detroit 2
Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Martin Hanzal scored the winner in the third period as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied for a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
Mike Ribeiro scored twice and Antoine Vermette had the other goal for the Coyotes, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
"The big thing for me tonight was that everyone chipped in for the win and we needed that after a hard turnaround from last night," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett.
Mike Smith gave up two goals in the first period, but shut the door over the final two frames and finished the contest with 31 saves.
More importantly, though, Smith also scored a goal with the Detroit net empty as he sent the puck the length of the ice and it just passed the goal line with 0.1 seconds showing on the clock.
He became the 11th goaltender to be credited with a goal, and sixth to score one thanks to his own shot.
Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Red Wings, who had won four straight coming in. Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 32 shots in the loss.
"We had the lead and you have to find a way to grind out wins on the road when you're leading," said Howard.
Trailing by two goals, the Coyotes scored with one minute left in the second period as Vermette made a nifty move at the inside left circle and snapped a shot under the defender and past Howard.
The Coyotes tied the game at 5:07 of the third as Mikkel Boedker fired a shot on net from the right point that Howard stopped, but the rebound sat on the doorstep and Ribeiro banged it home.
Phoenix made it a 3-2 game two minutes later as Hanzal took a stretch pass from Lauri Korpikoski and buried a wrister into the low left side for his second of the year.
Ribeiro's rebound goal with 6:46 to play gave the Coyotes some insurance, and Smith stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third and sealed the excellent outing with a goal.
The Red Wings took a 1-0 lead 4:47 into the game as Henrik Zetterberg chased a puck down in the left corner and threw it the other way for Datsyuk, who wristed it home for his fifth of the season.
Just over three minutes later it was a 2-0 game as Bertuzzi grabbed a loose puck off a bad pass and skated in alone before beating Smith to the glove side for his second of the year.
The last goaltender credited with a goal was New Jersey's Martin Brodeur on March 21, 2013 against Carolina ... Phoenix hosts Calgary on Tuesday ... Detroit plays host to San Jose on Monday ... Phoenix had taken a 4-2 decision in Detroit on Oct. 10 ... Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
