Final Score: Penn State 71, Florida 62
Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - Jamelle Cornley registered a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Penn State Nittany Lions to a 71-62 win over the Florida Gators in the quarterfinals of the 72nd Annual NIT at the O'Connell Center.
Cornley, who missed the second-round game with Rhode Island because of a dislocated shoulder, played with his left shoulder heavily wrapped yet still knocked down 11-of-14 shots from the field for the second-seeded Nittany Lions (25-11). Also scoring in double figures for the visitors were Stanley Pringle with 15 points, David Jackson 14 and Talor Battle 13 points, although the latter shot a mere 1-of-8 behind the three-point line on the night.
The top-seeded Gators (25-11) were paced by Erving Walker with 16 points, Alex Tyus 15 and eight rebounds, while Nick Calathes struggled to come up with 10 points and seven assists, missing all six of his three-point tries.
Florida, which was trying to set a new single-season record for home wins at the O'Connell Center, led by as many as seven points late in the first half and kept the Nittany Lions away from the free-throw line in the frame, yet still trailed by a point at the break, 33-32.
In the second half PSU's advantage rose to double digits at 60-50 with just under six minutes remaining before the Gators cut the deficit to two points on a layup by Dan Werner with 2:10 remaining.
However, the Lions knocked down six free-throws in the final minutes to seal the nine-point decision.
Florida finished the contest shooting only 5-of-22 from three-point range and was beaten on the glass, 37-27.
Penn State, which has tied the school record for wins in a season with 25, is now off to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals of the tournament against the winner of the Kentucky/Notre Dame contest next week.
