State College, PA (Sports Network) - Stanley Pringle led four double-figure scorers with 19 points, as the Penn State Nittany Lions downed the Rhode Island Rams, 83-72, in the second round of the NIT at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Talor Battle added 16 points and five assists for PSU (24-11), which will face the survivor of the Florida/Miami meeting in the quarterfinals next week. Andrew Jones notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, and Chris Babb had 13 points in the winning effort.
Jimmy Baron led URI (23-11) and all scorers with 24 points on 6-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Kahiem Seawright also got into the mix, finishing with 17 points and four boards in the setback.
The Lions shot 45.2 percent from the floor compared to just a 33.3 percent showing by the Rams in the first half and they took a 42-29 lead to the locker room.
In the second stanza, PSU went without a field goal over the last 8:53, but it made 14-of-17 free-throw attempts down the stretch to secure the 11-point win.
PSU hit on 8-of-18 tries from long range and 27-of-31 at the charity stripe on the night.
These two teams met back in late November in the Hoop Group Philly Classic at The Palestra, with the Rams capturing a 77-72 victory.
