Muncie, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Keith Wenning passed for 445 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Ball State Cardinals to a 55-14 rout of the Miami-Ohio RedHawks in a Mid-American Conference matchup at Scheumann Stadium.
Wenning completed 27-of-33 pass attempts in his final home start under center for Ball State (10-2, 7-1 MAC). Jordan Williams made five catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Willie Snead reeled in 11 receptions for 133 yards including a 14-yard touchdown grab. Jamill Smith racked up 127 yards on seven catches, three of which resulted in scores. Teddy Williamson paced the Cardinals on the ground with 80 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
The RedHawks (0-12, 0-8) ended their season on a 15-game losing slide that dates back to the 2012 campaign. Drew Kummer and Austin Gearing split the snaps for Miami. Kummer completed only 4-of-13 passes for 93 yards and one touchdown. Gearing hit on half of his 14 throws for only 50 yards and was picked off. Gearing also gained a team-best 57 yards on the ground and scored a rushing touchdown. Dawan Scott tallied 51 yards rushing and 66 receiving yards in the loss.
The Cardinals took an early lead as Wenning completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Smith at the 8:30 mark of the opening frame.
Ball State then began to pull away in the second stanza. Wenning connected with Snead on a 14-yard touchdown pass to conclude an eight-play, 91-yard drive with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. Wenning then threw a 10-yard strike to Smith at the 6:20 mark of the second period.
The senior quarterback continued to shine in the late stages of the first half. Wenning found Williams for a 72-yard touchdown pass and threw a six-yard pass to Smith for another score that gave Ball State a 35-0 lead as the game progressed into the intermission.
The RedHawks finally ended the run in the third quarter as Kummer completed a 58-yard touchdown pass to Dawan Scott. Ball State drove into Miami's red zone on its next drive before settling for a 27-yard field goal by Scott Secor.
Miami responded as Gearing rushed three yards into the end zone to make it 38-14 with 5:58 left to play in the third quarter. The Cardinals began another run just before the start of the fourth stanza as Williamson rushed one- yard for a touchdown.
Ball State extended its sizeable advantage in the fourth period as Wenning completed a 75-yard strike to Williams. Secor chipped in a 29-yard field goal with 7:46 left in regulation for the final points of the contest that gave the hosts a 55-14 edge in the scoreboard.
The Cardinals amassed 585 yards of total offense and averaged 13.5 yards per pass. The RedHawks were limited to 281 total yards and turned the ball over three times. Ball State finished its regular season with a total of 481 points, leaving it only eight points shy of the school record set in 2008. Snead now has 13 career 100-yard receiving games, which is the most in program history.
