Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stacy Coley tallied 146 total yards and three touchdowns to lead the Miami-Florida Hurricanes past the Pittsburgh Panthers, 41-31, in an Atlantic Coast Conference clash at Heinz Field.
Coley caught three passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns and had his only carry go for a 73-yard score for Miami (9-3, 5-3 ACC), which closed out the regular season with back-to-back wins on the heels of three straight losses. Stephen Morris was impressive under center, completing 17-of-28 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Allen Hurns set career highs in both catches (nine) and yards (173) for his fourth consecutive 100-yard game.
The Hurricanes still have a shot at the ACC title game if both Duke and Virginia Tech lose on Saturday.
For Pitt (6-6, 3-5), Tom Savage was 24-of-43 for 281 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and also added a rushing touchdown. Isaac Bennett turned 21 carries into 141 yards and a score, while Tyler Boyd (nine catches, 98 yards, TD) and Manasseh Garner (four catches, 78 yards) both had impressive receiving outputs.
The Hurricanes struck quickly, running out to a 14-0 lead less than four minutes in on a pair of Morris-to-Coley touchdown strikes, one a 32-yarder and the other from 34 yards out.
Pitt cut its deficit in half at the 9:56 mark of the first quarter when Bennett ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run. Miami responded later in the frame when Matt Goudis knocked through a 29-yard field goal.
The Hurricanes pieced together a quick three-play, 80-yard drive late in the first and into the second quarter, which was capped off by a seven-yard touchdown run by Gus Edwards.
Chris Blewitt made a 36-yard field goal for the Panthers with less than three minutes to go in the half, but Miami made the most of its little time left, as Coley struck on the ground with a 73-yard scoring scamper to put the Hurricanes up 31-10 at the half.
Pitt orchestrated a 10-play, 92-yard drive in the third quarter, ending in a seven-yard touchdown rush by Savage to bring the Panthers within two touchdowns.
Miami padded its lead early in the fourth with another Goudis field goal, this time from 39 yards out. The Panthers managed to cut their deficit to just 10 midway through the frame on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Savage to Ibrahim, but the Hurricanes put the game out of reach on their next possession when Morris threw a five-yard score to Asante Cleveland.
Pitt added a touchdown in the game's final minute when Savage connected with Boyd from 12 yards out.
The Panthers outgained Miami on the afternoon, 501-476, but they were done in by two turnovers, while the Hurricanes went without a giveaway.
