Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Eric Stults (3-11, 4.96) Colorado - Jair Jurrjens (0-1, 15.43)

( - The San Diego Padres will try to avoid losing their second straight series when they conclude a three-game set Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Padres dropped two of three matchups with San Francisco before splitting the first two games of this Mile High City series. They recorded a 6-1 win on Monday, but dropped a 2-1 decision the following night.

All-Star pitcher Tyson Ross pitched very well in defeat and surrendered Charlie Blackmon's two-run homer in the third inning.

"It wasn't a bad pitch," Blackmon said. "I did kind of have to come out of my swing to get to it. It wasn't my best swing, but I was able to stay on it and get the barrel on it. That happened to be just enough to get it out."

San Diego got a run back in the sixth on a Rene Rivera solo home run, but couldn't pile on any more runs for Ross. Chris Denorfia finished with three hits for the Padres, who are still 6-3 in the previous nine games. One night after recording four hits, Chase Headley finished 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

The Padres failed to score at least two runs after producing that many in each of the last six contests. They will visit the Los Angeles Dodgers for four games this weekend.

Eric Stults is tied for the major league lead in losses with 11 (3-11) and draws the start for the Padres Wednesday. Stults finally cracked the win column for the first time since May 10 in his team's 2-0 victory over San Francisco and hurled seven shutout innings.

Stults was 0-8 in his previous nine starts and has allowed just four runs in his previous three outings. The left-hander is 0-7 in nine road starts this season and has a 3-1 record to go along with a 3.81 ERA in 13 career games (9 starts) against the Rockies.

Stults is 0-1 in two starts against Colorado this season.

Colorado entered Tuesday's game with a 3-18 mark in the past 21 games and Blackmon's big blast put the club back on track for the time being. Blackmon had a team-high two hits and DJ LeMahieu scored on the home run.

Franklin Morales picked up the win in the start and limited the Padres to four hits, including Rivera's homer, with six strikeouts and three walks.

"(Morales) seemed to make a pitch when he needed to," said Padres manager Bud Black. "He scattered some balls around the hitting area, he was mixing pitches. He got us out."

LaTroy Hawkins was the fourth relief pitcher used by Rockies manager Walt Weiss and earned his 16th save in the ninth inning.

In other team news, Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez continued his rehab assignment because of a thumb issue and could return this weekend versus the Minnesota Twins. Gonzalez has been on the disabled list since June 4 and underwent surgery to have a benign tumor removed from his left index finger.

The Rockies are 2-4 on a 10-game homestand.

Jair Jurrjens will make his second start of 2014 with the Rockies Wednesday afternoon and hopes to avoid any health concerns this time out. Jurrjens made his Colorado debut on July 4 in a 9-0 loss to Los Angeles and struggled through 4 2/3 innings, allowing 12 hits and eight runs. He gave up two homers.

Jurrjens went to a hospital afterward due to altitude-related breathing issues and "checked out all right," according to Weiss. Jurrjens, who was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning, joined the Rockies via trade with Cincinnati.

The right-hander established himself in the big leagues with the Atlanta Braves and appeared in only two games last season in Baltimore. Jurrjens has made six career starts against the Padres and is 4-1 with a 3.23 ERA.

Colorado is 5-4 against San Diego this season.
