American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Texas
(Saturday, July 12)
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 5, Texas 2
Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver tossed seven solid innings and the Los Angeles Angels took a 5-2 decision from the sputtering Texas Rangers in the third tilt of a four-game set.
Weaver (10-6), who left his last start due to a back injury, allowed two runs on four hits and three walks in helping the Angels to their sixth straight victory against the Rangers and their 18th win in their last 22 games overall.
"He finished seven strong innings in a tough place to pitch against some good hitters that have been tough on (Weaver)," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.
Howie Kendrick went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Hank Conger knocked a pair of doubles with two RBI in the win.
Rangers starter Miles Mikolas (0-2) was tagged for all five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings.
"I'm definitely not satisfied," said Mikolas. "My goal is to get deeper into the game and keep our team in the game longer. The defense made some great plays behind me tonight and I have to do a better job of holding that lead for them."
Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo each had an RBI for Texas, which dropped its seventh straight game overall and 13th contest in the last 14.
Carlos Pena doubled with one out in the second and Robinson Chirinos was hit by a pitch prior to Odor's RBI double to right that scored Pena. Choo followed with an RBI groundout to stake the Rangers to a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Los Angeles cut the deficit in half in the third, however, it could have done more damage if it weren't for left fielder Jake Smolinski.
Conger reached on a fielding error by Pena to begin the frame, Collin Cowgill singled and Mike Trout followed a Kole Calhoun strikeout with a single to load the bases. Albert Pujols drilled a line drive out to left, where Smolinski made a sprawling grab to keep the Angels to just a run.
Mikolas then struck out Josh Hamilton to escape any further trouble.
The Angels batted around in the sixth with a four-run inning to take the lead, ending Mikolas' night in the process. Pujols and Hamilton hit back-to-back singles, then Pujols moved over to third on Erick Aybar's flyout.
Kendrick and David Freese each delivered run-scoring singles and Conger brought home a pair with a double into right to give the Angels a 5-2 lead.
Texas couldn't generate much offense from there, as Joe Smith entered in the ninth and nailed down his 14th save of the season.
Cowgill left the game in the eighth after he was hit in the nose by a pitch when attempting to bunt ... LA went 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while Texas finished 1-for-9.
