American League Game Summary - Minnesota at Seattle
(Thursday, July 10)
Final Score: Minnesota 4, Seattle 2
Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kendrys Morales hit a two-run double and the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 on Thursday night to earn Yohan Pino his first major-league win.
Pino (1-2) went five innings in his fifth MLB start, giving up seven hits, two walks and one run for the Twins, who won the last three games of the four-game series.
Glen Perkins worked around a two-out single by James Jones in the ninth inning to pick up his 22nd save.
"We pitched pretty decent here," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "(Seattle) can hit. I wish nothing but the best of those guys over there. They get after it and don't quit."
Kyle Seager hit a solo homer and drove in both runs for Seattle while Robinson Cano and Jones each had three hits.
The Mariners used six pitchers as reliever Tom Wilhelmsen (1-2) made his first career start to fill a spot in a shuffled rotation. Wilhelmsen allowed two runs -- one earned -- on just one hit in 2 2/3 innings.
"I'd love to get another crack. It was fun," Wilhelmsen said of his outing.
Seager drove a 2-0 fastball over the right-field wall leading off the second inning for his 14th homer of the season but the Twins took a 2-1 lead in the third.
Sam Fuld walked, went to second base on Brian Dozier's single and scored when catcher Mike Zunino threw into left trying to get Fuld on a double steal. Kurt Suzuki then hit a sacrifice fly to score Dozier.
Morales made it 4-1 with a two-run double to the center-field wall off Joe Beimel in the fifth inning. The runs were charged to Danny Farquhar, who gave up consecutive two-out singles to Suzuki and Chris Parmelee.
The Mariners pulled within 4-2 in the seventh but were denied a chance for more than one run when a call was overturned on a challenge.
Endy Chavez scored the run after hitting a one-out single off Anthony Swarzak, advancing to third base on consecutive hits by Jones and Cano off Brian Duensing and coming home on Seager's sacrifice fly.
Jones beat a throw to third, but came off the bag as he was being tagged. He was ruled safe on the field, then out after the Twins challenged the call.
Corey Hart hit a leadoff single in the eighth inning for Seattle but was stranded at first base. Michael Saunders was facing a 1-2 count when he left the game after tweaking something on a check swing. Dustin Ackley stepped in for him and looked at strike three.
Pino struck out four ... The Twins begin a three-game road series against Colorado on Friday ... The Mariners remain at home to play Oakland leading up to the All-Star break.
